Hi everyone, I live on the isle of wight so only having 4 gears isnt a problem. (This is a 1.1 mk2 BTW) But I've got to go to nottingham again in march. Usally go natinal express but should be doing my driving test next week. but when i get much past 50 - 55mph its not exactly crusing revs, and I'm worried the jorney may kill my car :L Just wondering if anyone has any opinions please, 5 speed conversion isnt an option due to money, but anything else will be very apprecitaed!

Haha that only works if its on the deck, unfortunatly mine aint yet.... thing is its a 5 hour drive at 50 (approx) and i dont think 40 - 45 on motor ways will go down very well?

i have the 1.0L 4speed and have no problems doing 70 and maybe abit more , not had any problems whit mine doing a 200mile trip every now and then , should be okay as long as the engine isnt sounding like its having a ahrd time (Y)

I drove 200 miles back from picking my 4 speed up, sat at 70 quite well, no hassle. Also only did 1/4 of a tank.

i did 80-90 from devon all the way to castle combes and got hope and the problems started fried my plugs and leads

Well thats abit comforting lol, only thing i can think of is that over here I'm foot to the floor to get it up to speed, but then theres a corner straight away so av to slow down again. but was you lot ok just backing off once there and still holding the same speed?

Cruising at 100.... new head gasket... wasn't me driving mind!

I've been doing about 80 miles a week up and down from huddersfield to lancs on't motorway for a couple months now. Only thing i've noticed is the miles creeping up.

Its not as loud as you'd think cruising at 70 in 4th gear

I went to Carlisle,which is like where the north pole is,to pick my Polo up,it had one gear (fortunately fourth) and that reflected the condition of the rest of it (collapsed seat,pissed steering,clunking suspension,bald tyres,usual old skool issues).

Nailed it all the way down to Milton Keynes with no respect and it absolutely loved it - seemed a shame to rip the engine out the next day.

my 1 ltre mk3 bready was fine going down the motorways doing 70 +, and it was only a 4 speed aswell lol that was driving a 390 mile round trip and that did that about 3 to 4 times with ease, used up about 3/4 of the tank tho but that may of been with the fact that i admittedly was doing 70+ most of the time lol

I used to rock 70 all the time in my 1.0 4 speed. Never did it any harm. But then again that thing was impossible to kill. Even without fluids it wouldn't die.

My experience varies. In my 895cc Mk1 70 was noisy and it really didnt like it. Used to cruise at 55 everywhere. My 1.0 mk3 tho is quieter and will happily sit at 70-80, having no centre box and a loud back box doesnt help tho.

course thats "slip-streaming" used in racing etc

I did 90 all the way to cornwall (300 miles) in a late mk2 1.05 and was just fine, since then i have become more sensible... and long journeys at 70 are just fine in a 1.1. Just check oil n stuff.

If I can cruise at 70 in a 4-speed aircooled Beetle for hours on end, you can do it in a 4-speed Polo no problems!

I cruise at around 80-90 in my 1.0L, it revs at around 5000 but it seems happy. Go I wouldn't go any wherenear 100, because I wouldn't sit on the red line for 5 hours lol.

It's not tha long ago most cars on the road were 4 speeds and everyone managed to drive about at 70 on the motorways then.

my mini 850 did good on the motorway :-)
