Nothing wrong with that?!! :-p

Good effort!

haha fair play!!

how?!

bit of tape ... good as new!

when u said it went bang I'm guessin it actually went with a assive BANG! thn lol

lol karl, Good lad.

How did you manage that? Car park burnouts?

thats a proper fail! none of this small problem business.

did it screw anything else up? like the flywheel?

Karl our gearboxes always go around the same time as each other ha! remember fighting for the GT box from skatty couple of years back.

Mine went with a hell of a bang but didnt break the casing. That must have been one of hell of a noise!

I'd love to know the answer to that myself!

Thursday, the speedo drive stopped working. Friday morning on the commute to work, and the diff started making rattling, whirring noises. After avoiding using it over the weekend of the RR day, I had to use it on the Monday night getting home from work. It poceeded to get stuck in 5th gear. Come the Tuesday morning, and besides getting stuck in fifth, it started grinding into gears randomly. Next thing I know, 2 miles from my destination I'm coasting to a halt as I've lost all drive.

This is the odd part. I turned off a roundabout, got 400 yards up the road, and it just sounded like stones bouncing off the underside of my car (which was apparently the case disintegrating). some whirring noises and some steam from hot gearbox oil later, I was immobilised. For what happened to it, I certainly expected more!

I've changed the flywheel, anyway, as I had a lightened, balanced one to go on, and it was rude not to whilst the 'box was off. In terms of collateral damage, the pressure plate was badly scored around the outside, from where casing had entered the bellhousing, and the clutch was contaminated with gearbox oil.

Atleast it didn't lock up, or that would have taken the engine with it!

That was fun and games!

The one I was sold was a dudd, so after a day under the car pissing around I had nothing but a car that wouldn't drive anywhere to show for it. Thankfully a friend came to the rescue with a GT box that had been sat in her lock-up for 3 years, that was notchy when changing gear. An oil chnage later, and it became the box you see in the pictures, albeit 2 years down the line.

Got an 8P on there now, and it's taking some getting used to! Haven't driven a Polo equipped with such long ratios since mine had its original 1.3 SPi lump some 5 years ago.

Good to see Pete back in action. I've never driven on 8p with as much power behind it as yourt car's got, but on a standard mk2, treat 5th (or "E" as it was known) as an overdrive. Get to the speed you want in 4th, then drop it in 5th to cruise.

1-3 shouldn't be too far differnt to a GT box, above that you've got £6-a-gallon spec :)

8P box FTW. i have sneaky suspicions my current box wont be lasting much longer, its whining quite badly and very notchy.

and you bummers winge about 6n2 gti box's

bosh some new oil in and they are usually reet and when they do go nelly they dont cost 7bazillion pounds to put right.

you make mine look paltry in comparison and i drove about 250 miles with no gearbox oil, the box was still going, bar being a bit notchy, it just sounded like an eaton in 1st and 2nd, it hadnt even died when we drove it to the unit for a 11pm gearchange mission

nice work, looks like the rod that holds the planetary gears of the diff in place fell out - it's got a bonded crown wheel and not the rivetted or bolted crown wheel - they've got some locking plates to prevent that from happening!

Yep, only held in by spilt pins on the press on crown wheel diffs. Looks like you can see a bit of one next to the hole where the rod is missing.
