I have recently acquired this 1985 Golf CL. I say acquired because it was given to me. It had been stood in a field for years and the owner was happy for me to have it. With a new battery it started. Just. And with a new wishbone and a clean of the brake pipes it passed it's first MOT for many a year.

It is all original with 42,000 miles on the clock. CL spec is as basic as it comes. One of my favorite bits is the radio, which has neither a tape player or the option of FM tuning!

It needed the clean of its life, a good service and the interior needed work as all the fabric had fallen off the door cards but here she is:

@Pete - G40? Probably not such a bad idea. I use this for work every day and the power/fuel economy ratio isn't brilliant. 4speed and an old carb HK don't help very much.

As for the condition of the car. It does have a few flaws, small scabs at the bottom of each front arch and one by the exhaust if you look closely. A slight dent one one of the sills - seems like a parking/jacking accident. That's honestly it.

That looks really smart mate , how long had it been sat there? Couldnt of been that long as it wasnt covered in crap and overgrown. Either way, another type 19 survives.

@vwjake31 - it was in the field for roughly 4/5 years.

Not sure what happened, when or how but the engine started playing up big style on this thing. It just would not go on the 2nd stage of the choke and was misfiring badly under load. So all the usual avenues were investigated, exhausting my limited knowledge of carburettors.

Replaced all the ignition components

Checked for air leaks, replaced all the gaskets and vacuum hoses

Paid for the ignition timing to be checked

Rebuilt the carb with a servicing kit from Fast Road Cars

No change after all this and a good couple of months of frustration and driving the car around on half throttle.

Took it to Paul at Circuit Motors by Castle Combe this week as a final straw. He was recommended to me as someone with a decent diagnostic machine and experience with Webers. The ignition timing was nowhere near correct as it was (this despite 2 garages checking it out for me) and this immediately cured a lot of the issues with the car.

Left the car there for a couple of days so it could be properly tested and have the Weber carbs tuned/re-jetted on the rolling road and came away very happy. As you can see it went from a very poorly 41bhp to a whopping 71! Not bad for the little 1300 that supposedly left the factory with 55bhp.

Hooked up to Circuit Motors diagnostics. Great bit of equipment!
