Whilst owning two polo's i have been asked countless times why i bother with one when i could have a golf.

My answer is always, because I like them bettter than golf.

But thinking about it, theres plenty of reasons why i prefer owning an 86c (mk2-3) polo than the equivalent age golf.

Whats your thoughts? would you sooner have a golf if you had the chance? if so, why?

Because they are better looking, handle better, more engine options, better breaking, more used spares and a cheaper price, more modification options, nicer interior, nicer spec.

Main issue is insurance costs.

Considering 86c polo's they definetly don't handle better.

But the rest is spot on.

I dont know if i'd agree with the more modifications part (and defo not the handling) but yeh... pretty much spot on

I had 2 16v Polo's then went from that to a mk3 golf, and honestly could not wait to get another polo, golf was far to big for me, handled rubbish even on coilovers, would pick a polo over a golf anyday, new or old

because a polo is like a golf BUT better !!

I love my polo, they are a bit different, golfs have been done to death i felt, so i decided a polo was the way id like to go. Thats not saying i wouldnt have a golf, in fact thats next on the cards i reckon :)

Most people have lower trim Polo's because of insurance when they are young. Once you can afford you jump ship and buy the better car - Golf haha, after that a Corrado etc etc

Main reason is insurance costs, Gladly have a mk2 or mk3 Golf but just can't afford the insurance right now :(

i bought a polo for the fact that all the small hatches I've ever been in/driven the polo felt the best quality in my price range, now I'm thinking of jumping ship but keeping it vag and going down the seat route, seem to get more for your money and not as bad on insurance as a golf! for me anyways!

I've had 6 mk1 golfs, 2 polo g40s, 2 mk1 polos, 1 mk3 polo fox, 5 mk2 polo coupes and 1 mk3 golf.

the mk1 golfs have been the most fun, and so easy to work on, (easier than mk1-3 polos) but all are very basic, meaning maintainence and upkeep, and repairs when they break are very affordable, meaning cash can be spent on modifications instead.

bought a polo g40 after a mate told me of a supercharged polo, which i got at 21, sold that and bought 2 mk1 golfs and started to learn about mechanics. a few months later i spotted an audi 50 and decided i wanted one, as they looked ace, even more so than a mk1 golf, little did i know an audi 50 and mk1 polo were the same thing, so the hunt for mk1 polos came about, then i spotted a mk2 coupe, which have a smart little shape, retro and slightly modded with a lil bit of lowering look great.

the only thing thats annoyed me about the polos is the substandard suspension setup, which tbh isnt actually that bad, but when coupled with a subframe, they outhandle a tired mk1 golf gti.

polos ftw! i'd have another mk1 golf in a heartbeat, I'm looking for a small block one atm so i can house a naughty G lump in it!

I know a lad sellin a mk1 golf cab with no engine for £450 if your interested saf.

I know fuck all bout the golfs so dont know weather it would be short block or a good price.

Its probably not a good price. Golf cabs don't command much.

With correct suspension and chassis upgrades the polo feels like a go-kart. I cant imagine any golf (maybe a MK1) feeling like a go-kart.

To make a golf actually feel like its moving, you need either a 1.6 or bigger. Thus costing around double in tax. And probably a fair bit in insurance.

Polo will be equally as fast with a 1.3 or 1.4

thing is toby, as I've explained to you why i'd have a mk1 golf over a mk3 polo G40.

The mk1 already has the basis of a decent suspension set up. You dont have to go throwing 400 quid at it to get a subframe set up OR get some custom coilovers made that arnt cheap!

Personally i liked the sleeper factor. Not many about and the GTi was pretty quick, Surprised a few things. Even though everyone called it a golf lol

i had my 6n worte off and bought a mk4 golf an it was soo slow i couldnt wait to get a polo agen & ended up buyin a 6n 1.6 :) i prefer polo's all day

I could easily sell (or have sold when it had an engine in) and bought a nice golf. But to fuck with that, id rather the polo.

If i was looking again for a 1st car now.. id get a MK1 fiesta. Theres nothing appealing about a golf to me at all. Even MK1's don't do a great deal for me.

Just different I guess, also stupidly cheap to run and maintain compared to other cars. Mates with Honda's, Citroen's, Vauxhall's etc forever seem to be spending money on broken things, I haven't spent a penny on my GT apart from consumables!

I've only seen about 2/3 other MK1/2/3 Polos on the road from what I can remember.

You buy a G40 so your not part of a pathetic golf scene which there is nowadays. I agree fully with the cost of making the polo handle like a mk1 though, i wouldnt have a polo without a subframe as they are grade A shopping trolleys. I think that anyone who says a polo is mechanically better than a golf is soo wrong. The mk1 golf maybe simple but the quality of the thing is far better than any comparitable polo. The thing is mk1 golfs are hard come by (the nice ones) and just to state Cabs are not mk1 golfs! If you do find one be prepared to sell an arm for it unless its a barn find :)
