I've got a Polo and a Scirocco because Golfs are boring and everyone's got one. I believe the Mk2 Golf was VW leading the way and building the first bland eurobox.

I also prefer small cars.

a mk2 golf is not noticably bigger than a 6n2 inside. or outside

I'd generally have a golf over a polo, well the mk1-2's and mk5-6's

I only have had polo cos they were cheap to buy and fix and cheap to insure. I did prefer my mk2 golf than them though.

One thing i will say. MK5 R32 is better than ANY polo.

Unless you put a R32 into a MK1 polo

I've got to say I prefer Golfs. There's something about driving a Polo that makes me look and feel like a dumb blonde new driver.

Although I just buy whatever's cheap! Be it a 6n/Golf etc.. I like something with a bit of a kick and non of the polos have ever succeded (exc. G40)

When I wanted economy the diesel polo was amazing and quicker than the Golf equivalent so nicer to drive day to day.

HOWEVER I always wanted a caddy not a golf, so my polo is a caddy with a roof for wet weather carrying!

to be honest i have no preference.

I love all shapes of polo, (apart from the 9n's front end)

and all shapes of golf.

I prefer older cars because it actually feels like you're driving a machine, as opposed to the machine driving you.

I would have got a GT if a decent one came up for a good price, but my Golf came up first, in better condition and probably a better price than most GT's. So I bought it.

Also, I think going from a 1.05 mk3 to a 1.3 mk3 wouldn't have been enough of a change for me (I'm only young, I want to experience some different cars!)

The tax thing is very valid, didn't even take that into account when I bought the car, got a shock when I saw how much tax was!

I just like the Go-kart feel of the early polo's, simple mechanics linking your hands to the wheels and your feet to the throttle body/brakes. Plenty of feel and feedback, but massively let down by disastrous brakes and chassis as standard. The trouble is the money you will spend getting a polo up to the level of a well maintained mk2 GTi (subframe, suspension, brakes, engine mods) could also be spent just buying a golf and making that even better.

Personally I would love to own a bike carbed 1.6 16v 86c, for the engine noise and for the sleeper looks, and also just because every journey in an early model could be your last You don't get much bigger thrills than that so cheaply. But long term i would want something like a corrado, just because i have liked them for a very long time!

I got a polo as a first car cause I wouldn't have been able to afford running costs of a golf, then I liked them so I bought a GT which I'm more than happy with for now.

Wouldn't mind owning a nice mk1 or 2 gti golf one day though, once my insurance goes down a bit.

my choice was simple mk2 or mk3 golf (could probably only insure a 1.3 or 1.4) or a polo 6n2 16v

i chose the polo because everyone has a golf, I find the golf boring to look at and I also wanted something relatively modern interior wise. at the end of the day I'd take a high spec polo over a low spec golf anyday I prefer to have a small, more comfortable car than a basic bigger car as I'm not insecure about other people thinking its a girls car. I like my polo so why would I care about what anyone else thinks?

ps the manual says my polo 16v is 980kg thats with fuel, not dissing a golf gti but the 16v isn't a GTI contender, this is because if vw made their small car as fast as their halo car (golf gti)it would be marketing suicide by pitching your own products against each other(much like gillete with mach3 and fusion, Morons)

mk1-3 polos are fun, they handle bit crap, brakes are rotten and interior is lacking in toys in standard form but when you find a B road and go play and they are great fun and make u smile, and being the under dog to golfs makes them more appealing to me as its something bit different from the norm.

I can be amusing when people begin comparing a spec of one car from one range to that of another when you think a mk2 GTI cost twice what a top spec polo did when they were new its hardly a fair comparision is it.

I'm kinda lucky as my bro has had a couple of 8v and 16v GTIs before i got mine plus a few mates have them so I've tried a fair few mk2s in my time an the mk2 is a different league to all but some very special polos!!

Dont worry though as i still have a need for a polo an will get another as i still have bugger loads of parts to go one them lol

i never really choose car's, they choose me. most of the cars i've owned have been offered to me a prices i couldn't refuse or were just too cheap to say no, or i've just seen it and wanted it. i don't think i've ever set out looking for or having much preference in any perticular sort of car, i certainly didn't choose any car over another, infact most of the time i have more than one sort of car any way, atm i have a chevette (probably the only car i went looking for), a mk2 jetta, a mk2 coupe S and the mk3 polo, so i'd say my problem is more the fact that i can't choose one sort of car over another tbh

Can't blame you at all for going for a more modern polo. The 1.4 Golf is annoying slow. Also I'm talking about the mk4 16v rather than the 6n2, never had a 6n2 so no idea

Personally, I got a polo because it was cheap - to buy, run, maintain, tax, insure etc. Also, since I have been driving one since I was 17 (nearly 10 years now!) I can do all but the triloest maintenance on it. So that makes that cheaper! I like the looks, they are quirky in a way, but my attachment is mostly sentimental. I like the mk1 golfs but scene tax has made them too expensive for what they are. Mk2s have become pricey too. If i was going to have either, I know I would have to put a stupid engine in one, just because its possible. At least this isn't an option with most polos. I'm not going to bullshit, like some have, that it's like a go-kart, because it's not. You can chuck them around, yes. And I do/have. But it's non comparible, in standard spec, to a golf
