for me, they are so much fun and nice and simple. plus ud expect a golf to be relativly quick and dont expect it in a polo. and u see one fly past going a million mph and your shocked

Same here, but when I'm not driving the transit, I like the Polo just as much :p

My brief affair with a mk3 polo was pretty good tbh, i loved the way you can dismantle 80% of it with a 13mm socket. Definitely have another.

If you've got the original toolkit (double ended screwdriver, wheel brace and 10/13 spanner), you've got everything you need til you get to the headbolts.

i used to carry all the 10 tools needed to completly strip the car. including the headbolt tool

i wont add more fuel to the fire but my observation is that a lot of you must have driven some truely rubbish mk2 /3/4 golfs, scirrocos an jettas for you to think they are that bad in terms of handling, speed, comfort etc.

Well, my scirocco GT is by far the quickest car iv owned (2 polo's and a poor mans lupo) , but it was always going to be.

So i think that they beat polo's in that respect, but it is not the funnest car iv owned, that has to go to the mk3 polo.

Comfort is out of the question when talking about a polo.

Are you trying to say that the mk3/4 golf handle well mike? I've driven a few mk3's and hated them for the lazy way they drive, even the vr6 which I was gutted about if I'm honest. I've only driven one mk4 but that was a 20vt that had had a lot spent on uprating the steering and suspension and it was still dull to drive. It was nice and was very comfy but it didn't handle well even with all that and it wasn't what I would call quick at all, but 150bhp in such a heavy car was never really going to be

If I wanted comfort i'd buy a lazyboy, at least that comes with a free beer fridge

The best car I've ever owned was a mk2 16v golf, I love them cars and if one comes up at a reasonable price at the right time I will have another. My polo couldn't compete with it in terms of speed and definitely not handling but it's still just as fun to drive, just in a different way. The polo is much more skin of the teeth fun, never quite knowing if you will make it out of this bend, but it still feels alive which imo the mk3 and 4 golf don't.

Bit as with every thing I guess it's down to personal opinion, some people might like their cars dull and disconnected from the road.

Anything VW made after the Mk3 Polo/Mk2 Golf is crap to drive. Yes they can go faster, but they're nowhere near as fun. VR6's and Golf R32's are probably the most overrated cars VW have made, can remember a mate going on about his R32 handling constantly, how he could manage certain speeds around certain bends. Took him out in my Clio and he was physically sick lol. With the Polo you don't even have to break the speed limit to have fun, with a decent amount of lowering/stiffening and a bit more grip mine is ace for nipping about in, nice direct steering and a decent amount of feedback so you know what its doing.

Mines more squrimy than understeery. If it understeers its nothing that a quick throttle lift doesn't sort. Yes they understeer if you just keep your foot down, but a driver who does that isn't a good driver.

Infact the only thing that mine does that a 50-odd bhp car shouldn't is spin the inside wheel when accelerating out of roundabouts (when going quickly). Guess thats something to do with the suspension design.
