Well, after many hours reading, it appears that there is a possiblity that the 02K gearbox will bolt up to the small block engine. i'm looking in to this as an upgrade for the 085 as i will be putting some decent power through it.

Supposedly the 02K in standard form is utter rubbish due to the diff and crownwheel rivets, but being an 020 hybrid there are hundreds of different ratios and uprated internal parts available. Does anyone know if being an 020 hybrid will allow the 02K bellhousing to mate to any other 02x boxes? It also uses the larger size input shaft.

As far as i can see you have to overcome the hydro clutch, they also use the huge and heavy 200mm flywheel, i believe its the same bolt pattern. Drive shafts shouldnt be too much of a problem as it uses 90mm flanges but again, an 020 hybrid so 100mm are a possibility. There are loads of different length cvs from 020 and 084/5 cars, some must be close to fitting. They do mount differently are heavier and a lot bigger so the welder is necessary, but surely it may be a stronger option and more cost effective than continually rebuilding the 085?

All of this may be wrong but its been many hours of research and i think it could work. I'll get hold of a 02K bellhousing and see if it does..

I've been reading about these boxes on clubgti, sounds interesting, could be an amazingly simple way of getting a much stronger box for an early polo!

hi joe. this is very interesting, i dont really know much about gearboxes but I've just been doing abit of research, am i right in thinking that there is a gasket between the bellhousing and the rest of the gearbox? if so i have a found a gasket which looks to be in that shape and its listed to fit both 020 and 02k boxes, so this should mean that you could use a 02k bell housing with the rest of the 020 box

the bellhouse stud pattern is slightly different on the 02k models so 2 of the bolts wont line up, other than that it may be possible so long as you use the clutch, flywheel (back to front clutch) and change it over to a hydraulic system
