Welcome to the Forum.

There are quite a few things that could be causing the problems.

If there are no signs of a misfire, I would tend to start by looking for possible air leaks from the throttle body towards the engine.

Is it as bad or worse when the engine is hot/cold?

If you have access to Vagcom, that may throw some light onto the problem, if not, then I suggest that you have a look for said air leaks and re-post it if there is no improvement.

Regards.

hi thanks for the comments

it seems to be worse when warm. i think the auto choke keeps the revs up till warm then it has its problems

a friend has plugged in the fault code diagnostic in and it tell me lambda sensor may have a fault do you think this could be causing the problem

thanks mick
