MK1 16V (£999 project)

Featured Replies

right, i have recently purchased a loverly little blue mk1 polo 900cc beaut!

I'm entering the car into the PPC 999 challenge

http://www.ppcmag.co.uk/forum/index.php

see here for details

Anyone can enter and it costs £50 and of course the £1000 for your car or less.

I basically plan on dropping a valver engine into the car for as cheap as humanly possible and sorting out suspension and tyres etc

So far i have

car - £350

BMW 100+ alpina replica wheels - £50

Avon CR500 caterham tyres - £10

strut brace - £20

Nitrous kit - £100

You can sell £250 of the car to recover some of the costs so the original engine etc will be going on ebay and i have found a buyer for the interior.

The actual event takes place at santa pod in september and involves a 1/4 best time, handling circuit, and a build dairy part aswell. there are all sorts of funny awards to be won but the fastest wins it more or less.

Car so far looks like this, will be changing throughout the year, hopefully be a lot faster with some help from everyone aswell

just a quick reply, (will get a picture later) i will not be running the BBS splits for the £999 event as they cost more than £1000 without tyres. instead i have found a set of BMW alpina copy wheels from a bmw 2002, they where orange but have now been resprayed white.

I have fitted the back pair but just waiting to do the fronts now.

running avon CR500 rubber, these are caterham tyres, road legal but semi slicks, much the same as r888's but a fraction of the price as a used tyre

175 55 13 all round.

Sounds like fun.. Let me know if you need more Club Polo Stickers to put on your car!!! ;)

looks like a good base i'll be keeping an eye on this too

ah hello buddy, hope the wheels all worked out for you with what you where doing with them

Right little project update

got myself a 16V engine. paid £300 for it in the end which i think for an engine with this much kit is well worth it.

Unfortunalty I'm missing a couple of bits of the wiring loom like the wire from ECU to the transponder box for the key.

As i have got a whole bike carb set up i think that I'm gonna run that instead as it will loose a lot of weight of the engine aswell and i can run the standard fuel line set up

photo-857.jpg

picked the engine up from a very un sunny skegness, (fish and chips was good though) in a works loan A class. took 4 of us to get engine but just managed to get it out other end with 2 of us. stuck the engine on the stand i hav and sterted stripping off what i didnt need

If anyone wants some bits of the engine (powersteering pump/ECU/loom etc) then let me know and you can have them for some pennies.

Going to replace the cambelt/waterpump/seals and top gaskets. paint rocker cover a nice matt black colour. will drop the oil out and check everything over. gonna ditch the EGR kit as its useless.

Going to make a new cambelt cover as the one on it was a bit fooked, not to mention the tensioner on the cambelt is oval and really fecked!

Apparantly the engine was rolling roaded at 117bhp with the manifold and decat. with carbs i will be aiming for around 120bhp

120bhp 650kg = 184bhp per ton...... would be nice to get to that magic 200bhp/T figure

Yes the wheels worked out very well for me thanks! Have a look here if you're interested;

Anyway, look forward to seeing more progress on all your projects. I'd like to see more of the E21 and the 2002!

Which ones? All my wheels are for sale if u got the right price ;)

The white ones!

  • Author

they are off a BMW 2002 tii race car.

They are 100+ wheels and i painted them in white but not too well, could really do with a strip down and powder coat to be perfect,

13x6

Offset is about 17 i think

Running Avon CR500 track tyres

£250 if anyone fancies them, if not they will be my £999 wheels. they cost me nothing as they came on my 02 racer so only the tyre owe me money but i guess £250 is a sensible price for a set of very good track wheels
