well learnt today that you cant get rocker cover gaskets today for these engines after i spent last night digging out the old one as its always best to replace gaskets right!!!! pissed right off!!!!!!!

Now i gotta find a second hand rocker cover gasket unless anyone haas any bright ideas..... stupid bloody VW!!!!

Got everything ready to do cambelt, painted the rocker cover...... before i found out i will now have to replace it!

and here is a picture of the inlet ports.

photo-1901.jpg

gonna look into modifying these a little to make them work better with the bike carbs

You can get them new buddy!!

Go onto rennegades mk3 build, he has the part numbers for them!

I managed to get hold of my ex who works for vw and she is ordering me the bits in the morning

Nearly had a heart attack then, i thought VW had stopped doing um

How much of a pain is it to get the gasket off? I'm considering getting the blowtorch out...

  • Author

Well firstly i wouldnt bother taken it out, if its leaking a little then just whack some sealer in it or something. however if your super keen to replace the gasket then a blow torch is best. i went for the super sharp screwdriver and hammer method and came out with stabbed hands and a big mess of bits of gasket round my living room

Oh and little update.

I'm off to santapod next weekend 26th and 27th for "the fast show". gonna take the lil polo up the drag strip on the saturday to give her a pre bigger engine run and see how it peforms......... I'm thinking badly! however if anyone wants to come find me in the little polo and share a jager or two on sat night

You should wait till the weekend after, and do it at GTI spring festival ;)

I bought the cover with it already cut off. They just hadn't bothered getting it out properly. I've done as much as i can with the screwdriver. still bits left in there. some bits came out nice and clean, other parts were a pig.

How much were the gasket (s)

I will find out the cost of gaskets when they arrive, my ex is sorting me out though. If they work out cheap I will see if I can get u a set aswell.

Found a mk2 dizzy today and engine mount but both are crap so I'm taking them back to scrappy tomorrow.

Had sunday afternoon off work so took the front bumper off and did some more work on my front repair.

sanded it down and took off most of the crap, just needs a layer of filler now to make it look fairly normal.

I did discover however a company that makes fibreglass front wings and fron slam panel so i can just replace it with that once i want to give it a proper paint job.

photo-1798.jpg

gave it a lick of white paint just to keep the tin worm away

Waiting to get Catia on my laptop so i can draw up my inlet manifold blank then i can start seriously looking into gettin the new engine in

  • Author

manifold blank dsign is off at the lazer cutters, once i have seen what job they do I'm going to look at getting:

plenum

rear engine block breather plate

nitrous injector panel for plenum

exhaust Manifold EGR blank plate

once this has been completed i also have a spare supercharger kicking about of a merc, so with a spacer plate, some mega squirt, bike throttle bodies, and a supercharger plate.

would look to run 180bhp then :)...... with 50 shot of nitrous

230 bhp 0.6 tons = 383.3bhp/ton............. fast....... would hope for some 12.5 quarter miles..... might need to uprate the clutch though lol

Paint it white!!! white mk1s are epic!!

Boosted and 180hp will see some very interestingly shaped con rods if you plan on using the standard ones mate

are you still planning in using this in the 999 challenge? Surely these plans would take it well over the budget?

EDIT: just reread, 230hp you gonna need some serious internal work make an afh handle any where near that mate

Edited by McLOVIN

he is already over budget surely??, just edits the receipts and prices when selling and buying so it looks like its less than £999

I thought it must getting close to the budget already lol. thing is they ain't stupid a couple of years back some one entered in some tuned turbo'd jap beast (can't remember what it was) and just fitted odd coloured bonnet and boot to try and blag that he only paid under 1k for it but they sussed him out straight away. you've got to remember its ran by car people for car people so its not going to be easy to pull the wool over their eyes

The whole point of doing it is to see who can build the best car for under 1k, if your gonna spend more than that then what's the point in doing it? :?

Beside Dan what ever you buy has to be some thing that's available to every one to make it fair, if your mate works for a subaru breakers and 'sells' you a tuned stood lump for a tenner its seen as cheating

naaaaaa internal work not needed. Its only got to do a quarter mile lol

internal work is only needed if you increase the engine temp or rev limit.

With mega squirt i can adjust igntion and fueling to compensate for temp and a spacer plate is all you need for lowering the compression

If i was going to be running that kind of power every day on the street then yes i would build a hardcore engine but for this kind of event it doesnt need much work

price wise

Spacer plate - £35

supercharger....... free (i got it from my work place warrenty department :) )

mega squirt - £100

bike bodies - £40

My total for the car so far has only hit £850 including bike carbs so with some changing around its affordable..... i just dont think i can be bothered to do all the maching work quite yet. the university of Herts will make all the plates from billet if i asked them for free (got lots of mates still doing engineering degrees down there ) but to get everything laser cut will take me over budget

oh not white...... its going red :)

paint arrived today

this is the car that gave me the inspiration

If a standard BMW m10 engine 8:1 compression (low to start off with) can safley run 7psi (and turbo'd) on standard internals and push out 200bhp without nitrous I'm sure the ol 16v modern engine can give it a go

there are a lot of loop holes and everyone does take advantage of them

biggest and most important thing in everyones mind though is dont take the piss.

I'm not gonna run the charger for that reason but i may still mount it up ready for the future.

You can sell £250 of the car to make some money back (therefor £1249 busget)

service items are free

there is no scrutineering

all your own work is free ( people who own engineering workshops are good to go)

put it this way, if i owned a tube bender i would just cut the front of the polo off, space frame the front and run a 1.8T engine and just boost it too 300bhp. 1.8t's are about £300 if you know where to look..... that 500 bhp per ton!!!!!

I'm one of the fairly sensible people who run a build diary and keep track of everything

last year contained a rover 25, complete with lotus elise 1.8 engine turbo'd and running 11" banded steels on the front and slicks........ never even got questioned.

what won it last year was a boring but very good crash damged celica GT4, just repaired the front end and up'd the boost and beat us all hands down....... i got disqualifeid last year for drink driving...... nobody told me that drinking jager during a race event was a no no...... will stick to shandys this year :)

omg wow that golf is sweet!! I'm a huge fan of that, that just has to be done mate!

So what else do you need to consider in the price, stuff like wheels, tyres, brakes, suspension and so on? if so how are you going to do it? The car went for a large sum of your running total so far as you outbid me on it by only a few pounds.

Lets just say that i had a little talk with the owner when i got there and considering the amount of rust and the poor photos they knocked 150 off the price...... i even used the excuse that it was my mate was bidding against me to up the price and it wasnt even worth what i was paying for it....... being a car salesman i have a way with talking people down

my biggest costs so far are.....

car £350

engine £300

used caterham tyres £10!!!!!

old standerd bmw e21 alloys £30

carbs and mounting £80/£100 dependin on other bits still

nitrous kit £100

springs £20

I've sold the engine/interior and lots of bits of the valver lump so nearly got my full value back from that.

My full predicted budget so far is £933.20

I plan on using this weekend at santa pod to see what times i can get on the standard gearbox and clutch and i can calculate to see what times i can achieve with 4 times the power. i can then evluate if my money is better spent on nitrous or suspension as in truth the most time is made up on the handling course.

I'm takin mine up the strip next week so I will let you know my times

  • Author

at santapod??? whats up there next weekend? i got sunday off work so i may be able to come up in something none VW and come check it out. engines coming out on my polo on the monday momment it gets back :)

GTI Spring festival, on the sunday at the pod, I'm going up the strip with a dodgy gear selector tho so my changes will be rather slow atm

this looks freeking sweet buddy! :)

possibly done a deal today to swap all the rear glass from the car today aswell for some perspex....... might aswell get out as much as i can.

maybe i should go on a diet for a few weeks aswell...... i can definalty spare a couple of kilos

Internal work is also needed when the standard internal are made of chocolate

Seriously tho the AFH has some major weak points in it (the con rods for starters) that make it not very boost friendly at all, comparing it to a totally different engine is pointless, different engines have different tolerances on different parts. If you were only building it do do the quarter mile it might be ok, but 230bhp on the standard internals wouldn't be a case of if it breaks, just when... it would be fucking legendary while it lasted tho

I didnt know that they where so poor on quality in that kind of engine..... whats the 1.6 Gti bottom ends like..... i was doing some random research the other day and apparantly they can be matched up to the AFH head which has better flow and give you about 130bhp standard. with carbs n zorst i would hope for 150.

Ideally i would like to 1.8T the car eventually and as pesch in czech republic do a complete fibreglass front end i would like to build a space fame front with a flip front
