MK1 16V (£999 project)

Featured Replies

theres a FAQ on the AVY/AFH conversion.

Not sure on what its like on boost though, i think the internals are pretty much the same. something crank related that gives the extra cc's over the AFH.

correction, i sold you the engine for 250 ;) ....your fuel costs dont count as your work paid for them ;)

get it boosted!!!

well i took the old polo up the strip........ epic fail...... 20 second quarter mile lol

so today i started taking the old engine out, everything is all stripped down just gotta borrow a crane from work tomorrow

my 5" tacho arrived before the event so i fitted that and it worked pretty well.

although a very slow 1/4 mile time the data was all usefull and i think i can run on the 4 speed standard gearbox for the event, it will give me lots of acceleration and shouldnt top out by the end of the strip but still offering maximum power. might have to find some stronger driveshafts. will update with some pics tomorrow but you can have this one for starters lol

sprayed my helmet too

may look to get the car lowered aswell on the front

  • Author

well car didnt get lowered but tidied up the engine bay and got i completely resprayed in Redoxide to match the rest of the car eventually

here is a picture during prep

photo-2186.jpg

managed to get the mk4 alternator to fit the mk1 engine mount and line up, may have to come off to get engine in though. will have to see nearer the time

right well have aquired some lowering springs for the car now, spent most of the day smashing the old ones of the car..... what a pain in the minge that was.

car now looks a bit better on the rear. still working on a plan of action for the front

photo-2460.jpg

also offered up one of my BBS against the new red wing

photo-2022.jpg

and finally set about designing my plenum chamber for the carbs. need to get the engine and carbs on really so i can start measuring to see how much space i have got

modified my seat (with the aid of a fat bloke) to be a much tighter fit on me, just got to get some side mounts now so that i can stick it in the car andset it up for me

Nice Kirkey 8-) I run a pair of them in my mk1! They literally weigh as much as a fart

Nice work dude!

  • Author

spent the other night bending it and pissing around till it fits me nice n snug. i would run 2 of them aswell however I'm swapping a passenger for a 12lb nitrous bottle.

  • Author

right well not any huge updates I'm afriad

ordered a load of Red samco hosing to plumb my bike carbs up.

Removed the old cambelt and tensioner from the 16V engine and fitted the new bits on, prepped my new clutch and flywheel ready for bolting on.

Got the front springs ready for fitting and found out they had lowered dampers in the legs too which is nice.

waiting for the alloy side mounts to arrive for fitting the kirkey.

trying to sell some split rims at the momment to pay for some parts, got a couple of sets if any one is interested

I was thinking about going red oxide but the stuff from halfords is almost brown :?

Yours looks a much better finish.

What you think about some laquer over the top of it?. Make it kind of satin.

  • Author

problem with laquering using rattle cans is that its impossible to get decent even finish. if you leave it matt then if you get a scratch just spray straight over it.

you can get 12 cans of simonz red oxide 500ml for £15 off ebay..... loads cheaper than halfwits.

I have decided that I'm going to be fitting my engine on the day of the royal wedding. if anyone wants to come to stevenage and give me a hand there will be beers flowing and prob some sort of street party. loads of room to crash at mine aswell. dont know if we will get the car running but plan to get lots done. and there is always lots still to spray on the car lol

I'm a little bit desperate for a vacume advance dizzy if anyone has one they would like to sell to me

photo-1383.jpg

which alt belt are you planning on running? i found that the belt saf mentions in his how on this conversion is too tight but with a little bit trimmed off one of the unused mounting brackets on the bottom of the alt it fits nice and snug with no need for any tensioners

been running mine like that for 6 months now with no issues

  • Author

was gonna measure it and then just go too local motfactors and get them to find one that suits, was gonna do this in the car though as i need to make sure my magic brackets actaually allow the alternator to fit in there lol

  • Author

well samco, carbs and flange all dropped of to my local welders, should get it back in a week i guess, they where pretty busy from what i could gather

Looking good mate.

More pics and info of this cambelt cover would be cool though... its exactly what I need on mine!

  • Author

will make some templates of the cambelt cover when i finish it

but now for some updates on the project

some major progress yesterday

photo-813.jpg

engine going in

photo-1436.jpg

All in

Also got the front lowering springs and dampers on, one side is lower than the other, gonna shift the battery to the passenger area i think to try and equal the difference however i think its just useless used springs.

Its more or less riding on the bump stops on the front which is pretty much how i like it and i have an idea for the rear to make it much lower and stiffer but not much point untill i sort out my BBS split rims.

was not the easyest of installs. i had to grind down the original mk1 starter motor to clear the bigger AFH block and we had fun chopping about a lot of the water pipes to get some that lined up but pretty much all there. there are some very very close tolerances on the belts aswll which required some cutting and shutting of some inner panels

still waiting for the carb manifold to come back from powerflow so i can start getting that bit of the project sorted. also need to get a rotor arm and cap for the mk2 dizzy

more updates on friday

Your running a mk1 starter? :? How come? Is it because your using the standard box?

The fit is very tight yes, but no need to cut or grind any panels at all, only flat one edge of the arb mounting plate on the belt side of the bay, otherwise all is fine.

Nice to see its in, now get the car painted and sell me some sweet rims!!

using the standard box. it offers the maximum acceleration for autotesting.... (999 challenge) just not sure that the clutch (even though brand new) will last.

I'm running the mk4 alternator as its lighter than the mk1 i think and it has all the nice plugs etc, the way its mounted meant that the plug touched the front slam panel a little..... but no enought to worry too much. just a little fetteling with a hammer. belt i think is going to be tigh but i have played with that aswell and looks okay at the momment.

Just itching for my carb manifold to come back so i can fit it all on and actually fire the old girl up.

I'm right at the limit of my budget at the momment so I'm not sure i can fit a 5 speed for the competition, i could loose th nitrous kit but its cheap power

  • Author

got quite a bit done.

Modified the manifold to clear ARB without having to buy silly lowering blocks..... will eventually though

Fitted all the exhaust

Painted some more on the car.... just the doors left now :)

photo-1973.jpg

haha, looks pretty sick

  • Author

just in process of ordering the BBS sealing rings so i can get the mags all up and running on it ready for RTTS.

work still to do

- fit kirkey seat

- modify rear suspension (with a grinder)

- fit BBS rims

- Fit Carbs and get running!!!!!

- fit nitrous bottle and plum the nitrous lines

- build plenum

  • Author

sealing rings for the BBS arrived today :), also won a set of tyres for 99p so gotta pick them up.

Spent all last night moving the engine about with a lever bar and tweaking bits with a grinder but finally managed to get the alternator belt on.
