Struggling with insurance :/

Featured Replies

Hey, new to the forum and just bought a '97 1.4 CL 6N this morning (saturday) and am really struggling with getting a decent quote for when I'm 17 (June this year)

Tried the crappy comparison sites and the quote for this car on a provisional is £877 with any modification - including engine mods, and I don't have a problem with that price. On a full licence, it goes up to £5151, with no mods at all, surely that ain't right? Colingswood were the cheapest providers on provisional, and I think it was Asda for a full licence.

Tried the more specialist insurers like Flux, Footman James, Brentacre etc and the online quote systems are all ''down for maintainence''.

It was something like £4kish I think, as a named driver on a policy with my dad (with my mum also as a named driver). We would be able to do this legally as I'll be at the same workplace as my Dad before I'm 17 so we'll be sharing the driving, so it won't be fronting. But still, £4k is horrendous and I'd like to halve that really, if not even less.

Anyone got any ideas as to who to get quotes from, ideally insurers that'll cover minor mods like lowering and wheels without adding too much to the cost of the premium?

I know it's a bit early to be getting quotes but I want to know that I'll be able to insure it when I pass

Cheers

just to let you know mate, its still fronting, even if you dad does use the car, as the car is yours,

and to get a cheaper quote you insured it as your dads.

the police at cracking down on it at the moment. But in your situation it may slide.

co-op, admiral/elephant, are good insurers. Used the many time and the wuotes have been cheap.

try going full comp with them, as usualy it will make the quote cheaper.

Then add your perents ect.

been in you situation and still are with a modded GT. good luck

Cheers for the advice :)

If I can get a good enough quote for my own policy with the parents as named drivers, I'll take it and I'll do all the driving to work :L But if not, we'll probably have to have me as a named driver and dad will have to do more work miles than me to balance it out, although it will be my car. As far as I understand, the main driver is the main driver, regardless of who owns it?

The insurers you're suggesting, do they tend to be okay with wheels and coilovers etc?

Again, cheers for the help :)

to be honest mate don't mod your car as it will make even fewer insurers want to insure you.

less competition = higher premiums

mine was 850 on provisional then it went up to 967 when i passed trust me it will be alot cheaper when you have had it on provisional for a while. i got almost a year ncb out of my provisional.....

Welcome to the world of motor insurance mate...and as you can see it's a killer.

Theres a bit in the News of the World this morning about car insurance for young

people and they tried to get a quote for a £2.5k 1.8 Mondeo for an 19 year old man

and were quoted....£22k from one insurance company, the cheapest quote they got

was for £5K....twice the price of the car.

If you're going to try going under your dad's insurance then go for co-operative.. £69.74 a month (I looked into it myself and I'm in the same situation as you, same car etc.. Dad and I work together too.) I'd also recommend having the car under your dads name on the log book so you can say that it is your dads car and only using it on an odd occasion. I'm just paying for me out on my own anyway with my dad added to my policy (£4200)

Also co-operative didn't change price for my alloys or springs

It will still be fronting, like mentioned insurance companies and police and cracking down on this now more than ever.

When i was looking at buying a car, a 1.4 was about 5K to insure...hence why I went and bought a 1.0L, paid 1800 for it on my own policy (still stupid amount but lowest i could possibly get without fronting)

Now, after a year of driving and 1 years no claims, I can insure my 1.0L for £995 without modifications and £1000 for a 1.4 without modifcations, or both for £1200 with mods...

Think the best thing for you mate, is to be the main driver, add both your parents on as named drivers and try both third party fire and theft and fully comp, as sometimes fully comp is actually cheaper!

Try the likes of Admiral etc as they tend to be cheap, even the 10month bonus accelerator is good as it gives you 1 years no claims at the end of the 10 months (if you don't crash obviously).

Then you would be able to get cheaper insurance again after that 10 months..

Anyway, listen to what other people have to say and take a mixture of advice to try and find the best quote

Good luck man :)

apparently, my mate's insurer told him to put someone else (i.e his mum) as the main driver, even though he said that he would be the main driver

You can probably get away with it, if its the only car he uses.

Try adding your grandparents as named drivers, both my grandfathers on my policy half the premium.

Sam.

Cheers guys, as said it will genuinely be a shared car :)

Adding my Grandad raised it by £300 :/

I'll try Admiral and Co-op, cheers :)

Try bell insurance too buddy, they specialise in young drivers. Add your parents on as named drivers and it'll bring the premium down. Direct line are fairly good for first year of driving too as long as you don't mod the car.

Don't use price comparison sites, they don't really give you accurate prices, best just to go straight to the insurer.

Get a diesel, they are normally cheaper on insurance. I had a mk1 phase 3 clio 1.9 diesel it cost me £1100 to insure, was cheaper than any fiesta etc. Or just do not mod your car for one year, its only a year and as said above it may give you more chance of getting better quotes.

Wait 9 days? Equality bill might reduce premiums for young male drivers by 25%

http://www.guardian.co.uk/money/2011/feb/1...-price-equality

And increase female by 10%.

But I bet it will increase by 5% for everyone as the cost of implementing the ruling because of needing actuarial

data to justify loadings.

you just got me all excited, I'm 17 and got my test next month! I hope they do drop it :)

i like the sound of this!

this is my fave bit: Some women aged under 25 would be hit with hikes of between 50% and 60%, while some young men could see the cost of their cover cut by as much as 25%.

so they will end up being the same price then :)

Sounds good!

Gonna get some quotes now I think, and compare them to what i get in a couple of week's time. Will post how I get on :)

Co-op quoted me £4.5k on my own policy with no mods. No additional drivers.

I'd been getting similar quotes by going on my dad's policy with my mum as a named driver.

BTW, Admiral quoted £7.9k and Bell are ''associates'' of Admiral, even the website has the same layout, so I didn't bother with them.

Direct Line were ''unable to quote''

also i found it was cheaper to insure my mum 2.0 turbo bmw than it was to insure my 1.4??

Tried Flux, quoted me something stupid, can't remember exactly what it was but I think it was about £16k :o

would just be cheaper to use a taxi for the year right? insurance is crazy. and no, boys insurance aint gonna come down by 10 percent. they will just increase womans up to the same as boys. fronting may be illegal but if you have your mum or dad as the registered owners of 'your' car andf put them as the main policy holder and you as a named driver how could they ever prove it?.

Get a Mk1 polo 895cc :-) Cost £1200 for my first year, fully comp. I was moaning about the price at the time, but seeing some quotes on here, i cant see why

Dont even think about modding. I drove standard for 2 years.

GO EQUAILTY BILL
