Basically, it's insurance for trade usage. I'm on one, I can get in any vehicle I hold a license for, and I'm insured. But if I'm not performing a trade journey, I'm not insured by it. I'm guessing said 18 year olds are garage apprentices and are hoping if they get caught or involved in an accident, they'll be able to bull their way out of it by sayng it's a customers car. You can have fleet (ie permanent) vehicles on a policy, for example a garage might have it's breakdown van and courtesy cars on it, but you have to declare what these are, and this can have a bearing on the premium. Likewise, you can add domestic usage, but there's a big premium.

They also normally have a maximum value of vehicle driven, and often exclude anything modified implicitly, or charge extra in a big way.

If you want to get a quote, they will ask what line of the motor trade you have a business in, how many years you've been trading, etc.

ahh! think il forget about that then, its just iv been told that a mates mate has ths sort of policy on a fiesta and drives a scooby on that policy.

Chances are, he's not properly insured. The sort of policy that would let on 18 year old use a scoob for trade and personal use is not going to be cheap.

A garage with 3 staff (all over 25), 2 vans and cover for the staff to drive anything unmodified up to £40k value for trade purposes was paying a four figure sum about 4 years ago.

you can be a named driver on a trade policy for social domestic and pleasure purposes, its gonna cost me £1500 at 20 to go on my bosses trade policy, its silly cheap as i have no claims, I'm paying the same as a named driver atm on me polo

then i am covered to drive any car, atm i can drive any car as I'm an employee, sign it over to the yard and drive it during working hours if i want to but not much point as i just drive their cars anyway, fuck using my petrol

you cant get a policy in your own name until your 25 as far as i know, and youd need to be in the trade, they're probably gonna be strict on it

you tried quinn direct? they have a fully comp policy that covers anyone 17+ tpo on other vehicles

my mates dad has a traders policy and hes alowed 35 perminent cars at any one time he has about 6 inc 3 vans a 4x4 and the family cars and use as yeti says any car he holds a license for and i know that costs him £900 but he has been driving for 30 odd years so...

i got trade policy, had it for 8yrs, since 20yrs old, paying £350 quids a year never claimed or had any need for it,its 3rd party only if i smash the car i'ii get it repaired and none of my cars get hooked, because there never left out, and i drive some decent stuff

got my sister who's 21 on my insurance which added another 500 quid, as she "does the admin" blag otherwise whe'll b payin £2500 for here polo tdi' ripoff,

So when she's driving her own car, and not one for 'trade', She'll have no insurance? or do you mean company insurance.

Most trade policys have the option of adding SDP on, my dads has that.

I have a trade policy, If I have any car longer than 3 weeks I have to register it with them. I have 2 "private" cars on the policy and they are aware of them. They only let me have vehicles up to £15000 but then that isnt a problem. Apart from that I am able to drive any other vehicle.

how many of you people with trade policys are actual "traders"?

thing is they are quick to sell you a policy but come time to claim i bet you will all have difficulty doing so if you are not a legit trader.
