Got pulled by traffic police for a noisy exhaust this evening, luckily they didnt have their decibel meter with them. He said something about it cant be over 90db? Has anyone else had any problems with this? I dont think my exhaust is that noisy, the centre box is standard and I've got a small cherrybomb on the back. The bloke seemed pretty frindly though and turns out he has had several polo's.

I had a straight through exhaust on one of my old Polo's and it was a longlife thing, copper asked if it had an 'E' mark on the thing

Apparently they should measure it at a 3rd of your maximum revs and should not be over 101db, but thats just what my dads told me in the past coz mines abit noisy at times.....mainly in the 4000rpm range.....

The law is that it shouldn't be louder than a car of the same type with a standard exhaust in good condition. There's no set Db level.

Still, take the friendly warning and sort it out cos next time you'll get a FPN.

Its got a slight blow where it joins in the middle. He just told me to sort that out. lol.

I've always followed the SVA rule stating that the legal limit across the UK is 101dba measured at between 2/3 and 3/4 maximum revs under load.

and without his meter he cant do fuck all, if he fined you on a guess then he would be laughed out of court.

I got flagged at a 95db track day after 2 pass by's came in at over a 100db , when they tested it in the pit it didnt even make 80.

The exhaust may have a limit however there is no limit on induction noise. I always have a quiet exhaust and really loud inlet, still sounds sporty but legal, maybe you guys should consider this.

no one mentioned induction noise, just exhaust noise. The OP's question was in regards to exhaust.

I know my exhaust is a lot louder than my induction noise under load (Got pulled for excessive induction noise on another car in the past, but as you said there is no level for induction, found out then that dump valves are limited to 110db), on the day I got picked up I was full whack in 4th at around 90MPH (about 5500 RPM).

I've been pulled for my polo exahust as the copper thought there was something wrong with it after i blasted past him on a dual carrigeway (he was parked) but after pulling me in was happy that the idle wasnt excessively loud.

I hate to think how loud my polo is right now. its got a manifold and thats it, the rest got rippedd off when i attemped a speed bump.

Managed to get home tho without being pulled over, there is an amazing difference in power with no exhaust.... there practically none

At a routine stop-check point in Derby, I got pulled over due to my exhaust. They simply asked did I have a mid-silencer, and was it decalred to my insurance company, before giving my car a once over for tyre tread and tax, etc. They were happy to let me go on my way after that, without any words of caution for my exhaust.

I'm lucky i didnt get done for mine.

Managed to snap it just before the back box on some ice i didnt see, been rolling with it busted for a few week! =| Its amazing how much power my little 1ltr lost and how much more fuel i used (over revving to actually get anywhere.)

Luckily all sorted today and I'm back to been able to hear myself think....well if the stereo aint cranked up!
