Ok, I'll make a very long story short.

When I first bought my car my "cleaver" mum decided it would be best to do something very illegal and use insurance fronting to get cheaper premiums. So I transferred the car that I bought into her name. 2 years later, I was still fronting and the car was still in her name. She decided to let her very abusive boyfriend enter the house and the general atmosphere turned thick, fast. After yet another spat, I moved out to live with my dad. Yes I am still working on getting my own place but whatever!

So, with the insurance needing renewing and my dad being a bit more clued up. We decided to insure the car properly and after 3 solid days of ringing around we got a very good quote even though it was £2600. When I asked my mum to transfer the car back into my name we hit a snag. Now this was an old 2001 suzuki alto which was a smashing runner, looked like crap though. Probably worth £300, but I needed a car and with the tax up at the end of that month I needed something fast. This is where I got my polo. Like an idiot, I handed the car back on a silver platter. Dumped it on her road, took the battery out and "forgot" to leave the keys. The insurance ran out and I was now 100 miles away. She asked me why I took the keys and I told her that it was not her car and that if she wanted it she would have to come and get them.

She phoned the police about it and the advice she got was "insure it or we impound it and you get the bill". I laughed and eventually handed the keys over.

Should I have just kept the car and not drove it until it was in my name and insured? Or did I do the right thing (legally, as I did pay for, maintain and fuel that car)? Could the police have done anything if I didn't hand the keys over? She said I have 48 hours or "else" pretty much.

I realize that this is all done and dusted and I got no chance of getting it back, nor do I want it back (polo ftw!) but I am left a lot of money down because of this and I want to see what anyone else thinks.

i think you should of had more respect for the woman that bought you in to the world, kept you fed watered and clothed though out your child hood, who put a roof over your head and who helped you out when you needed to get your car on the road (how ever illegally she did it).

and its no use trying to pass the buck on to her by saying your 'clever' mum did it, because you were just as guilty as her. this post just goes to show the lack of respect you have and your inability to handle situations like a grown up and take responsibility for your actions.

I have no respect for a woman that could let a guy into the house and be so violent to both of her children. Any respect left instantly goes when she takes my pride and joy away and scraps it. My question still stands, I still don't know where I legally stood in respect to the car.

No offence but If i was you, i would first of all sort out that silly boyfriend of hers out and show him whos BOSS OF THE HOUSE and not run away!

and when she called the police why didnt you go to her boyfriend and LOOK FOR TROUBLE!

doubt there is much that could have been done as the car was put in your mums name

and its your mum at the end of the day you should know whether she was going to take it any further

ok, so this doesnt actually really matter, as you handed it over, your not in trouble with the police and youve got another car now????
