These are driving me mad - trying to remove the front struts (backs came out easily) and the the nut in the top mount is not shifting at all.

I'm currently leaving them to soak in WD40 and have tried giving them a few whacks and don't have a blowtorch/heatgun to try heating them.

Does anyone have any helpful tips or consoling words for me?!

i had to drill mine out mate, start off small and work you are wany up until there will be no presure on the nut and will crack off easy........i tried for 2 days to get them off without damaging the strut...i couldnt!!

Not good news! Will just be patient with the WD40 for the meanwhile.

Yeah whack some plusgas on there, WD40 won't do shit!

when i did mine a week befor i sprayed some WD40 and let it seep in

undone a peace of piss failing that drill it out

or failing that Cillit Bang (orange top)

Will continue to be patient with the WD40, then will have a go with Plusgas - thanks for the advice!

Try.. Put some molegrips into your wheel arch and clamp the strut near the top (don't worry it won't even mark the strut) then get a socket on the nut and a breaker bar and it should crack right off

Iv done loads that way, clamp the grips as tight as you can and it holds it

Try soaking it in diesel, works like wd but is sometimes more penetrating got seized engines to spin again with it. Give it a wee wire brush each day and clear the crap as it eats in

Could any tell me the size/ dimension nut the are (mines a mk2) cause i rounded both of mine and need to replace them, cheers kurtis

Might have to take it to a garage in the end!

If your replacing the shocks, take a hacksaw or angle grinder to the top, cut through the little cup thing and the top of the shock, then just get replacements from a scrappy or motor shop fro a few quid

Get the proper tool for the nut on the top.

Or get a set of good molegrips on the damper shaft and just force it off.

If your changing them then, as suggested, cut it off.. I would however advise cutting the spring to stop it going TWANG across the road or were ever your working

I had this problem and took it to the garage and two mins later it was done lol

windygun everytime, just drive back with them a little loose, as long as you avoid take off spots, all should be fine.

So how do they do it with the gun when you need to use the allen key/stop the strut twisting with the nut?

it's an impact gun.

It shocks the nut off.

Mole grips + wd 40 + buzz gun will get the most stubborn of nuts off

mole grips on the piston rod. I usually put two pairs on at once. Never had one I've not been able to undo using that method.

i used a cigarette lighter impact gun on my siezed mounts, worked a treat
