Ok my Dad won a car on ebay without viewing it (yea I know...)

We went there today and the car was ok (open air but roof didnt work hmmm).. but the woman seemed like she was trying to pull a fast one..

She said the green slip she had when she bought it was taken away by the DVLA when she taxed it 3 weeks ago. The DVLA also sent her a letter recently requesting the VIN and the previous owner's address. She claims to have forgotten who she bought it from a year ago, and they also typed the reg number wrong in the letter. So basically we turned up and she had no V5, even though the auction said "V5: Present". We want to buy the car but without a V5 present we were a bit worried about handing over the money... they seemed a bit dodgy and tried some usual tricks like "oh I'll just re-list it on Ebay to avoid the hassle then" etc etc...

Why would the DVLA take her half of the V5? And how do we get it back? Is this a dodgy car?? :S

Personally barge pole comes to mind. Save thje hassle and look elsewhere.

dvla dont take the green part,if you need to register for a v5 with it you still keep the green part but fill in a new form from the po,its your reciept and proof of ownership

the post office will take green part of log book to send off for new log book if didnt recive on back from previous buyer so that is defenatly possible

long time since I've done it that way so could be wrong if honest

i wouldn't buy a car with no v5 unless i know its kosher

any hint that it is dodgy i'd just walk away its not worth the hassle.

Could be straight up, at the same time, could be a cat-c write off.

We both knew we weren't handing any moolah over, even when they started getting funny....

Once (or IF) they get the v5 back we will buy it but until then no chance.

ok called the DVLA today and it was actually exported (probably by a serviceman) in 2000 so that checks out fine. It had been registered until 1 year ago when the new owner 'forgot' to send off the log book when they got it from a dealer. It's a common pikey tactic apparently so that speeding tickets/fines cannot be sent to an address since technically there is no registered keeper. Anyway it is ok to buy it and we can just transfer the log book when it comes back from the DVLA. sooooooo no worries! :)

yeah no doubt id run 10 miles unless the car was for PEANUT monies :-D :-D , anything without v5 is usually salvage or has some smash dodge history :shock:

BEWARE and dont fall for any blags the seller might come out with

so you know as well, although ebay is a binding contract if the seller has lied in the description it no longer stands as a binding contract.
