I was reading in a previous post that the AEE has a v. lumpy cam, therefore giving large lift (?) I have a GT cam ready to go into my AEA (same cam as AEE as standard?) but now am wondering whether its going to be worth it. Could anyone shed some light on the situation? If the AEA offeres more lift over the GT, whats the trade off? Would the GT cam offer better economy? Power in a different range? I know the GT cam is meant to be the lairiest production cam, but this is the second time i have heard people say the AEE cam is the same/lupier than the GT. Does anyone know the cam timings and the overlap durations? Since the engine isnt running yet, I cant try one, and then the other to make my mind up. Plus there's no point in me sitting on a GT cam (though it is nice :lol::roll:) since they are in demand from folks.

Or, on the flip side, what benefits might i get by putting a GT cam into a standard carbed 1.3? Or even the AEA cam?

I've got an AEE cam i can get the verniers out on... I can have a butchers tomorrow if you like?

VW spec info:

3F "030 AE" = 218deg, 8.8mm lift

3F "030 AF" = 214deg, 9.6mm lift

ABU "032" = 211/215deg (inlet/exhaust), 9.4mm lift

AEE "032P" = 204deg, 9.6mm lift

AEE "032S" = 205/203deg (inlet/exhaust), 9.6mm lift

Note that duration (and lift?) are quoted with the valve 1mm off the seat, whereas most aftermarket cams will quote data from on the seat.

i had a piper 285 cam in my aee. thats probably why it pulled liike a train lol

think that was 11mm lift aswell :)

So there are two cams available for the 3F and AEE? I'll have to compare part numbers with the two cams i have. Thanks for that. From those figures, the AEE and 3F have the same lift. But what difference does the variance in duration cause?

I have an AEE...so thats 9.6mm lift, 1mm off the seat.

I was gonna get a newman 264...which has 10.15mm lift...so if thats measured from the seat...will have less lift than the standard cam..just a longer duration? What effect will that have? :s

Updated with a bit more info I've collated. Note that this isn't data from measuring cams first-hand, so use it at your own risk!

Any additions/corrections, let me know.

basically - more duration will move the powerband higher up the rev range

Lift (when stated in a linear dimension) is the distance the valve head travels from its seat. The higher the lift, the greater the volume of inlet gas.

Duration (when stated in degree's) is the amount of crankshaft rotation, the valve is off its seat.

Generally, the more duration, the power you will make. However, as said above, the more duration you run, the higher RPM rate your "peak power" will be,

Also, the more lift the engines camshaft has, the more power you will make (generally). However, during a valves "lift", it has an optimum point of flow, it is an equation that uses the valves head diameter. This means that if you have too much lift, for the engine's capacity and state of tune, you will start to lose power and/or make no difference.

So whats the lift and duration on the cams on an AKL? Wondering if I can get a better can for that to give it some more grunt. Only seems to start really pulling about 4.5K.

Same spec as AAV/AAU i believe.

AAV and AAU are different to one another. I think the Dutch info I posted is saying that the AAV has different overlap to the AAU, although the durations are the same. If they were truely identical, then they'd have the same part number.

Ah ok, didnt realise the text said that. The difference will surely be minimal between the overlap anyway?

It'll be significant enough for VW to bother developing a different profile and carrying an additional part. We'll never know whether it was performance, emissions or durability related though.

Could always stick some cams in a spare cylinderhead and measure them up. It's a ballache to do manually, but possible.

Hi everyone I'm just learning about camshafts so bear with me 

I've just picked one up that I bought on eBay for peanuts. It was advertised as a GT camshaft but looking through this post, it is not from a GT, it's a 030E 

I think (?) I have a NZ block ('87 ranger, 1.3 55hp), looking at the specs here it looks like I might get a small improvement even if not the GT gains I'd hoped for. 

Reason for commenting, I just wanted to know if I've got my facts straight, and also if people think it's worth chucking it on and see if it makes a difference? or maybe I should get my money back and look out for an actual GT camshaft or something similar.

ah hold on a minute, mine is... an MH block! so actually this camshaft is... exactly the same as the one I have! great.
