Young male car insurance to go down?

Featured Replies

Linky

There will be a lot of angry female drivers out there.

Socialism gone crazy, but I may benefit from this so I don't really care. I know for a fact that if the shoe was on the other foot (young female having high insurance), there would have been uproar years ago.

Discuss?

haha, you really think insurance companies will give anyone cheaper prices?!? That's a good un!

No, premiums for women will rise, for men, will stay as it is.

i read this on another forum before reading the report

and they seem to have got the impression rate for men will stay around the same however womens premiums will rise

so it will be interesting to see the actual outcome, if it even happens that is

as a person who is currently paying £3k i will be happy for it to benefit male drivers

face it, it's never going to happen. An insurance company is a business trying to make a profit with shareholders to answer to. Such businesses do not simply give profit away. They will increase premiums to women to bring them in-line with bloke's premiums. There is also talks of general increases as well because of the costs associated with implementing all this and again, these costs will be passed onto the consumer because businesses do not eat into their profits if given the option.

Exactly. I can't see anyone's premiums falling.

on another note, its best checking elephant and admirals quotes

there at least -50% more than anyone else at the moment.

Its all bollocks, just a way to get more money out of the public tbh. Now women can try and pay male prices, I got myself in alot of debt through car insurance...

OUCH!

They wanted equal rights.... :-p

On a serious note though, our premiums will stay the same and womens will go up. Supposedly the average for an 18 - 24 yr old woman is £1646 fully comp, and male was £2400 something!

What are people driving that costs them that much?!

Some people complain that their insurance is too much but they are actually living beyond their means, if its too much, change the car to something cheaper to insure! I complain cause I'm 21 and both mine together cost me just over £1100 fully comp and thats with the a 300bhp on one. Mind you, the van is only £340 a year fully comp.

yeah unfortunately it will just have the effect of increasing insurance for women and not changing anything for men - no one wins :(

But I do agree with the principle of the ruling. You shouldn't base insurance premium decisions on sex just as you shouldn't base it on skin colour or sexuality. Stuff like type of car, postcode is different because they are all optional, you are free to move house or choose a different car. Changing your sex isn't really an option for most of us!

I've just paid £935 for my renewal this year... I'm the only one out of our group of friends who's insurance hasn't gone up this year.

yeah it should be equal

i have tried quotes for different cars ranging from 106's punto's but the premiums are just as bad if not worse

i don't complain about paying £3k as i still have free travel so could get bus and tram for free however i would much rather drive and pay insurance for a car i enjoy driving

I'm waiting for my claim to be settled as i was hit by a lorry and despite the driver being prosecuted by the police his insurance are still trying to claim off mine and so i do not get my no claims this year until its settled

As long as my premium doesnt go up for whatever reason I'm not bothered.

Women should pay as much as us, i know plenty of girls who are incapable of driving yet somehow got through their test.....

So rather than equalising men and women's existing insurance costs, perversely, the ruling would in fact increase costs for consumers overall.

dont think so some how

Edited by dub loon

dub_loon - why do you think that? I think the insurance companies will jump at the chance. ANY company will jump at the chance of increasing profits.

Insurance prices should include gender as risk for the first 2 years then after that go on your driving record.

i realise how that reads now what i mean is with that statement i dont think they will be bringing our insurance down

(i dont think so somehow... was aimed at the title)

Let me just throw this in there... would I pay more insurance if I was black? purely because I was black? because that's exactly the same as they're doing here... it's discrimination.

hahah you dont wanna be the stereotypical 17yo black drug dealing mugger then cause youd be dealing from a push bike lool

lads insurance has always been higher as were more of a risk. Anything to do with the fact that more lads drive? Maybe thats why statistics show were involved in more incidents?

Make premiums the same and punish those who do drive stupid and cause accidents, not everyone under 25 :)

If it could be proved, statistically, that black people were a higher risk group of drivers then they'd probably argue the toss. But I doubt there's any data to suggest this is the case.

The fact is, male drivers make more insurance claims. Insurance cost is based on risk, more claims mean a higher risk, hence the higher cost. It's like charging older people more for life insurance, they're more likely to have problems than a fit 20 something. But it's easier to shaft male drivers with higher premiums than it is to do it to different ethnic groups. There'd be an outcry if they tried.

But in an age where you're not allowed to discriminate in any way, shape or form it does seem a bit antiquated to charge different amounts for men and women. If women want to be treated the same as men, then I guess they can pay the extra costs.

And yes, I agree that it should be an innocent until proven guilty system. Judge based on broad criteria in the first year or two, then base it on experience to date after that. With the computer systems available to them, surely that wouldn't be horrendous to introduce?

Unfortunately we've reached the odd situation where, in society, people try so hard not to discriminate that they actually end up going full circle. You're allowed shows like Loose Women, which is essentially reverse misogyny in the name of comedy and it's fine. But if you had four middle aged men sat behind a desk laughing about how useless women are it would last about a week before it got moaned off the air for being sexist.

I think equal rights is a good thing, but the rights do have to be equal. If it's not acceptable to be sexist, racist, ageist etc then the same applies whatever sex, race or age you are.

Interestting thing is, statistically, no one's the safer driver, the tendancy is, over a lifetime of drivingm for women to have more accidents than men, but for them to be smaller in their nature. Men on the other hand have less accidents, but the ones they do have tend to be much more serious.

Just gives more young drivers more of a reason to be uninsured. Its a load of bullshit! Fair enough lower mens prices as its a bit daft they are being charged more but why the hell do they feel they need to increase womens?!!?!?! Peed me right off this story has! Just more of a excuse to rip us off even more! Mens decreases by 10% yet womens rises by 25% explain how in hell thats fair!?

:evil::x :-X :x :-X :x :-X :x :-X :x :-X :x :-X :x

Poetic justice

For decades we've had to listen to women bitching about wanting equal rights while happily reaping the benefits of being female. Let's see how happy the women's right groups are with finally being treated the same as men
