Its not a gasket, Its sealant, I just did mine,

It costs £45 from vw, but my mechanic (vw/audi master technician who now works for himself) said not to skimp out and buy other silicone sealants.

although on the 16v engines he said you have to take the cambelt etc all off when you do the job. for once I'm pleased to own a shitty slow 8v!

on the 6n 16v engine there is a gasket mate, it's not like the 6n2

Those 2.

You have the one that goes around the edge, and theres one that goes around the holes for the spark plugs

Thats from VW btw, only place that will have it i would have thought.

vw will want £165 for a rocker cover and gasket set. i know its expensive but theres a reason to getting the rocker cover at the same time

i asked this a few months back and b-shaw came to the help. but what i found out is.

once the rocker cover gets cold. you will struggle like F*&K to get the gaskets out. i was doing mine for a good3-4 hours! i would personaly get the full kit from VW

just my opinion

Not true. Only the plastic cambelt top cover needs to come off.

And as said above, it is a pig of a job changing the gasket itself. If I was doing it again I'd either buy a whole new cover or just use sealant.

no he is right, went to get mine done on my 6n2 16v and the cambelt needs to be taken off :( pretty pissed, so I'm not gonna bother doing it for a long while haha!

6N2 is different though ;)

Wow this topic's a mess. Lets clear this up a bit..

6n 8v - seperate rubber gasket,easy life.

6n 16v - rubber gasket injection molded into aluminium camshaft cover.

1 - Can either renew the entire cover at considerable cost..

2 - Can get a seal set,but it takes work to remove the original seal..

3 - And this is what i do - use a micro-thin smear of some universal silicone sealant over the existing rubber seal, four quid from hardware store.

6n2 16v - The cam cover on this engine is in fact a cam carrier. Therefore it cannot be removed without removing the cams inside it,and that means releasing both timing belts. You can then use said silicone sealant as thinly on the mating surfaces, but you absolutely must not use it on the mating surface around the oil gallery for the camshaft bearing - or it can be starved of oil and total engine failure can result. No sealant is required at that bit.

does the timing belts have to come off on the afh engine to fit new rocker cover and gaskets
