HOW IT LOOKS TODAY[28/03/12]:

Comments: So here's the story.. My first car back in 2005 was a lovely little 1.1 coupe, which went through masses of transformations (I'm not sure the thread will still be around as the forums changed a lot!). It had mk3 bumpers for a while, then the reigier front grill and double square lights, 2 resprays, many wheels, then something went wrong... its still sat out back with stacks of new or mk3 parts on it, fitted with a mk3 NZ conversion from front to back(entire loom, engine, tank, dash, clocks etc) all carried out myself. Now somewhere along the line i changed cars while it was off the road, and it never made it back on(currently in the garden buried in leaves and has been for 4 years), and after going out to it last week, I did get the damn thing running to my amusement! But I do consider it to far gone to get it to what I want it to be. Perhaps it may see a track one day, but its no daily anymore.

So over the past 6 years I've been itching to get back to the polo routes, although I've been through several VWs including many mk3 polos, a mk2 golf gti 8v, Mk1 golf cabrio, a vento, and my current daily is a bora TDI...

So thats my history with polos, and now here I am, back again, after a huge bidding war on ebay on Monday, I managed to win myself this beautiful looking polo coupe S. I don't plan to swap my insurance over to this car until I've done a few things with it, such as getting my lowering kit off my other coupe fitted, and giving it a damn good detailing session. I'm not sure how far I want to go with this one when it comes to big mods such as engine conversions etc, but I know for sure one thing I will be upgrading is the brakes as they're seriously frightening. I feel a complete idiot as I just recently scrapped a mk2 golf gti which had a perfect set of front and rear disks on it, but thats the way things go I guess.

So for now, ill just stick some pictures up. I took them in the dark earlier just after I finished washing it down. they're slightly disappointing as they don't show how damn shiny the paintwork is, but trust me, they'll be plenty more to come over the weekend as get the meguiars gear and the pressure washer out 8-) I hope my welcome back around these parts, are as warm as how I'm feeling about the car... because right now, I'm feeling alot of love.

More pictures. really struggling to get them to come out looking red though! the pics make the car look a little pink :-p

I'm pritty happy with how low the front is sitting at the moment. I'm sure it will settle lower as the suspension kit has never been used. plus the back end is yet to go on.

Wow lost this thread 8 months ago. Massive updates commin this way once i get a chance 8-)

  • Author

Rite then, an 8 month update.... Hmmm where to start.. well going from where I'd left off above, the car went on the road on the first of april, so I'll skip through quickly then update this more regularly lol.

Within a week I had fitted my lowering kit from my other mk2. I painted up the scruffy front struts to match the rears.

Heres 2 shots from early summer with the lowering kit fitted, along with front and side clear indicators. nothing massive going on. Oh i did whip off the nasty side trims though ! 8-)

A pic from the only show I managed to attend this year. Volksfest wales in margam. I did buy a professional photo down there which I'll have to try an get a scan off.

These pics were taken in the brecon beacons in those lovely few boiling days we had early last month.

Thats about all I've done to the outside of the car. Ill now run through where I've managed to spend over a grand in the past month LOL.

First off i bought this AFH engine. It was sold to me as a conversion including all ancilleries, but when it came, it was just the engine with the engine loom attached, which had been chopped clean before the ECU, and the ecu in a box. The engine had been in a skoda felicia of all things!!

Below you can see the adapter plate that was used to mount it up to the felicia gearbox. For sale if anyone wants an AFH felicia..

Heres my home made flywheel lock tool. Made it up in less than 2 minutes with an angle grinder, and a spare 20mm exhaust downpipe spacer plate lol.

4-D476C97D-1917425-800.jpg

I'm going to leave it there for now, as my lunch break is over, so perhaps another update later on this evening Including the engine rebuild, new wheels, and new brakes :D

  • Author

Lol I didn't have time for a brew after uploading all the pics mate! The engines being rebuilt and will run standard fuel injection for now. At the moment I'm at the point of rebuiding the cylinder head.I spent 100 quid having.the head.pressure tested and skimmed before the strip down. Last night I lapped in the valves and got the the stem seals in, but I can't seem to use the valve spring compressor I used to get them out lol.

I then went on to spend an hour or.so watching people gas flowing on youtube. Doesn't seem to difficult and I know the afh does sufffer with its restrictive little head.. somthing to think about before I bolt it back on. Oh and I'm still having serious issues on finding head.bolts from anywhere else other than the deal at 7 quid somthing each. Hmmmm

  • Author
the afh head is alot better than the avy so your onto a bonus if you are polishing that one up mind :D Also good that your giving it a full rebuild. least you know what your working with then.

£7 it is mate... thats what i've spent :D

yea I agree I should be on to a winner if i do it and match the inlet to the head ports. They're an odd shape and theres clearly a bit of material I could dremmel out of there. Anyway thats yet to be decided. And again your right. To many people just pull a motor from a scrapper or an unknown source and stick it in the car, then wonder why the shit hits the fan in the first 1000 miles (would be slightly irronic if this now happens to me lol)

Onwards with catching up on the thread, here we go with more pictures and details..

ENGINE UPDATE

Heres a shot of the head when i got it back from the skimmers. Had to leave all the valves in for them to pressure test it, but it all went well and theye assured me it all holds pressure as it should.

IMAG0383.jpg

IMAG0382.jpg

Next step was to remove the bearing caps, followers, and valves. I like the way the bearing caps are numbered, just as simple asnoting number 1 is next to the cam wheel of the inlet side.

IMAG0385-1.jpg

IMAG0386.jpg

All the valves, springs, and top caps prior the the lapping. Its been a few years since I've done a set of these, never done 16 in 1 go either.

IMAG0001.jpg

IMAG0002.jpg

And this is as far as I'm up to at the moment. putting the new stem seals in. In all fairness they went in alot easier than I remember comparing with other cylinder heads I've done. I used a 10mm socket and a screw driver with a 1/4 socket head on the end. the sockets the perfect size to hold the stem seal and press it firmly onto the valve stem.

IMAG0004.jpg

IMAG0005.jpg

IMAG0006.jpg

As far as the engine goes, then thats pritty much up to date. Oh appart from this nice box of goodies I picked up from Vic on here. A full wiring loom, fusebox, key, ecu, transponder box, fuel pump, and just about everything I was missing to complete the conversion 8-)

IMAG0010.jpg

neeexxxttt. BRAKES !!

Picked up what I believe to have been a stonker of a bargin on ebay which I'm over the moon with.

G40 VWII carriers and callipers which have been shot blasted and repainted in matt black. Also included in sale was 2 brand new vented disks, and a set of mintex pads with next to no ware at all. Any guesses on a price?

IMAG0007.jpg

IMAG0008.jpg

and finally for today WHEELS

I'll just give the one cheeky shot for the minute. After a grueling 9 hour drive from swansea to kent and back, I had the pleasure of bolting these to the car.. I'll get up plenty more pics once I've given the car a quick clean and get my hands on a tidy camera.

Yea man i agree with it needing to go lower I'm just trying to work out how i can go about it. the back it easy as at the moment its on its highest setting. I just gotta work out how we can do the front. Are you working tomorrow dude? I'm commin up in thr evening so perhaps we can start early and piss around with the cars for a bit!!

Angle grinder

This looks to be coming together well mate although it seems like your building a twin to mine

HAHA cheers dude. Yea as if the AFH wasnt enough we now have matching wheels.

Lets be honest here, your cars quite a fine example to want to copy... I have been thinking about a respray in black actually..... j/k !

I'm even considering spacing the rear wheels. Theres no way i would have thought an 8J would be fully under the arch!

I know what you mean mate, I wanna flare my arches but it would mean spacing all four wheels out to fit the arches

And if you saw my car in the metal I doubt you would still be saying its a fine example to copy

  • Author

Nout wrong with spacing all 4 wheels mate :) At the moment my plastic arches still have the standard pop rivet fixings under the wings so I havn't even rolled the lip. I want to keep it that way to so i intend on thinning out the lip where it catches the top of the arch, and keep the rest of the standard fixings. I wont be going any lower until thats done, and I've tucked the exhuast into the tunnel as its dragging on the floor as it is!

Today I've had the front seats out for a serious hoover, and tightening up the handbrake. Found some ooollldd coins in the process lol. I should have a few photoshop pics up later showing what I want to do with the wheels. :unibrow:

  • Author

OK heres a quick chop of what i want to do. I'm not 100% on the colour scheme for the wheels yet, but I'm thinking faces and dishes in gloss white, and the back barrels in a matt black as I know for a fact i wont be arsed to take the wheels off to clean them should i do them white too.

I've also slammed it quite a bit more, but for some reason the offset of the front wheel has gone in quite a bit lol. Oh and finally I've removed the horrid black pin stripe from the side. I've actually started this and its taking soooo F**ing long !

If anyone has any input on the colour scheme for the wheels feel free....

pswheels.jpg

looks nice mate, cant be having that reverse rake though :)

my friend has a red mk2 coupe which he has dropped the S engine into, I'm sure he was speaking to you at VFW the year before last, his name is Ben Fenn and was from barry..

started the conversion yet? :)

  • Author

ahhh yeah I remeber you 2 guys. I had the bora at the time and i can still remember in my pissed up state telling you how much i wanted to be back in a mk2 lol! Well here I am

About the RR, me and my mate rambo_golf were discussing the weekend how I can eliminate it. I have a spare mk2 shell here so we were considering cutting out the strut tops and raising them closer to the bonnet.

I've not started the conversion into the car yet. I'm just in the middle of getting the engine back together. I've just finished building the head, and hunting for head bolts that arn't gonna cost me £7 each! Oh an I'm looking to make my own anti-roll bar blocks so save a few quid there. I dont want the car off the road for any length of time, so I think I'm going to Splice in the wiring loom, fusebox and ECU one weekend before X-mas, so its ready for a simple plug and play swap over a weekend in the new year.

Well today, due to working in the public sector and being on strike, I decided to make the most of the dry weather and get the G40 VWII brakes fitted up. Unfortunately I couldnt get any pics as I left my phone charger in work, but Ill get some up next time I have a wheel off.

I started with the passenger side, which went as smooth as can be and only took me 15 minutes, HOWEVER, when I came to fit the drivers side, I had an absolute nightmare. First of all, the flexi hose>calliper bolt rounded, so I though to myself, no worries, I have a spare flexi hose for the new calliper, I'll just simply disconnect the flexy where it meets the hard-line. Then that went and rounded off, which left me in a pickle. I eneded up taking a slitting disk to the hard-line>flexi hose joint, and replacing the whole lot right back up to the master cylinder !!

I imagine they're gonna take a little while to bed in, but at the moment, I've not noticed a massive amount of improvment. The pedals slightly spongy so on the weekend I'll go around the whole car and bleed it one more time, then hopfully I'll see a significant difference.

Next job on the list is to splice in the 6N fusebox and find a suitable place for the OBD socket :-)
