Just a few snaps from VFW this weekend. Dont think I've ever seen rain quite like that yestarday morning. Woke up on what felt like a water bed lol. Good weekend though, appart from losing my wallet satarday night!

BACK ON IT!!!

So after a suspected piston ring failure back in November on the 1.6 motor, the poor car has been sat dormant on the drive way waiting for some attention. And with spring somewhere around the corner, today i decided to make a start (in my new house, and new roomy garage!!)

As I've grown used to catching the train to work this pasty few months, I plan to rebuild the engine for reliable power, fit my berg arch kit along with a widened G40 rear beam, sort the body work and paint the car(colour undecided yet), and fit various other goodies have have laying around doing nothing (Polly bottom arms, fiber glass boot and bonnet, strut braces and the likes).

Today i began by giving the empty garage a good sweep, and setting up my work bench and stereo to see me through the day of pulling out the engine. As usual, I hit a brick wall, and didn't have the splined tool to remove the drive shaft bolts! At least I've made a start eh!

And that'll be it until I get this darn tool. Seriously hate drive shaft BOLTS ON VW's!!!!!!!

Nup. Got sold a duff engine 10 months ago by a club member, and haven't afforded to sort it out. So it's just sat in my garage. Can't really afford another 400 to be ripped off right now so it'll have to wait a while longer. Still so gutted like..!

You don't even need to take it out for the sake of a piston ring , my own investigation resulted in not being able to find a set the same thickness, I did tell you I suspected the problem was a piston ring and on the description you gave it sounded about right. So I made my mind up back them it was an incorrect piston ring.

I built it as a spare engine for myself ages before, using mostly parts id previously used, I know the parts are good. If I got a piston ring mixed up then one of your pistons has a ring the wrong thickness and there's play in it. As long as you haven't been driving it like that you don't need a new engine, just a new piston ring.

SO, almost a year and a half after having my biggest 'rage quit' yet, I hit a do or die situation with this car, but after weighing it up, you'll be pleased to know, I don't have the heart to sell up yet, and I'm going for it. For now, the 1.6 has been pulled, and I'm in the middle of swapping all ancillaries to a new 1.4 to get back in it and drive it.
Plan is to get it mot'd and driving as 1.4 and build up the 1.6 by summer. As I'm waiting on a timing belt kit to be delivered I've put on some of the parts that have been laying around. Gt/G40 steering damper, polly bushed TCA's, new heater and fan and a strut brace.

For the first time in a very long time, I've actually enjoyed working on cars, I have my own garage, a both door at both ends, heating, lighting, and space. Hopefully by the weekend ill be able to be in a position to lift it in and see if it runs.

Just took the water pump out of the new engine for a quick inspection before putting the timing belt kit on and a shit load of thick oily water came oozing out. Hope this isn't another shitter or I may just have a break down.

Well the water pump was very stiff to turn by hand so I've binned that and swapped it for a known working one and gave it all a good clean out.

I can't understand why the belt tensioner is on a thread bar with a nut on this engine. Every other one I've had has been a bolt. Hopefully it won't let go as I'm gonna put it in the weekend.

doesnt sound good. cant you nick the tensioner bolt off the old lump then?

Could do yeah. Torqued up the nut onto the thread bar now. The only time I've seen people have threaded bar is when they use the other block and I'm sure I've read they brake. Just can't understand why it's in there lol.
