AHHH I see. looks less pikey than i was thinking it would be tbh lol. so the mk3 polo cable must actually be longer than the mk2 then as theres no way the mk2 cable would reech like that. Cheers for taking the time to open the bonnet for me yet again tho, this threads starting to hold some vital info for the conversion for others. Dont suppose you have a spare thermostat housing you want to sell? I managed to break one out the outlets on mine. After I trimmed the of the pipe from the heater matix, it made it smaller in diameter so was a bitch to get on. I did manage to get the pipe on, but when i tried to rotate it to line it up, I managed to break the outlet. One step forward and 2 back this week!!

LIST TO COMPLETION::

REPLACE THERMO HOUSING (doh!)

EXHAUST SYSTEM (tempted to go to longlife for a custom system)

THROTTLE CABLE MOD

I think thats it but no doubt there'll be other tiny things for the MOT..

So close yet so far eh folks. I'm getting excited about doing the bodywork before its even drivable lol

  • Yes tis true , I'm not sure why it was such a problem on Higgos ? I could never get the throttle body to reset . I'm sure given enough time to sift through the faults it could be rectified. In Leggy

  • Just checked mine and top and bottom go to the matrix and middle goes to the expansion bottle Now get out there and get it fucking finished!

  • exhaust manifold modded and ready for delivery :-D tho i still think you should get stainless 4 branch manifold and 2" system you cheap ass lol :p heres a present for you

I've got two spare housings but both of which are missing an outlet, tbh I'd say your probably best off just buying one new because they go brittle over time time and that's when outlets snap off. If you get one secondhand you might find yourself in the same position when you come to put that pipe on again

The pipe I used for the cable was iirc the cheapo spark plug tool that you get in the polo's tool kit. It's all about the recycling :unibrow:

Oh you've gone through a few yourself then lol. I just got one on ebay for £35 and it includes the thermostat and a new sensor so not a bad deal. I think this time I'll put that award pipe onto it before bolting it to the block.

I don't have a polo tool kit to steal from but I do completely agree with recycling as much as possible. I've used all sorts from my spare mk2. Poor thing has been coco-shunted for anything worth 'lending'. It's gotten so bad the other cars now just a shell Pmsl.

It's about time I had my own welder now tho. I'd have all this done in no time.

Updates, updates!

moar updates!

lol I'm sick of updating when I'm not getting anywhere!!

There is somthing worth discussing though.

This evening I've managed to borrow a proper towing bar to make it legal to move, so I can get the car up to longlife exhausts( I dunno how well they are known nationwide, but down here they're highly spoken of by everyone).

so when I book in the car, and take it up there, I need to decide what I want from the exhaust system. A bloke I work with said they ask you how loud you would like the exhaust to be on a scale of '1 to 5'. I think thats ridiculous lol. As the polo has no sound deadening, and sits just under 3.5K at 70mph, I think goinging with '1' is the most likely possibility!

One of the main things I'm going to request is that the exhaust sits as tight to the body as they can do it as it was scrapping like hell before and I'm not even as low as I want to go.

Also theres the option on the tail pipe. I've no idea which to go with. throw some examples at me!

That is all Thank you! :smirk:

Love the skirts, I need a set!

Regarding tail pipe, how about a hidden down turned one? This is what I plan for mine.

thanks man Ill get some more pictures of them when i go outside as its light. You should keep an eye on ebay.de for the skirts, there were 2 sets for sale on there a few weeks back and most will offer international postage. cost me 28 euros to get them here.

I dont really fancy going with a hidden tail pipe. If its gonna cost me £300 for a system I might aswell get somthing I can see lol.

I've just picked up a 6N throttle cable so I'm about to see what can be done with it. If anyone needs any 6N parts theres 2 in my local scrappy and the prices are dirt cheap!

6n Throttle cable mod

OK a worth while update, Its done ! I had to modify it, but the 6N cable worked. I had to chop off the original fitting where it fixes to the pedal, and attach the mk2/2f pedal fitting.

without a welder to hand, I sat and pondered how I could join the 2 peices and make them secure enough to with stand the force of the TB spring, so I came up with this..

Its done with a slotted bolt and a nut done up mega tight which will be going no where. I will get them welded together once the car is driving. This bolt method isn't ideal long term, as it slighly touches the steering column, but the concept of 6n cable with mk2 pedal fitting is perfect. Just be sure to join them properly and not pikey it like me!!

The first pic below shows the difference between a mk2/2f cable and a 6N cable.

Second pic shows the 2 joined using above method.

video shows the cable in action.

£10 well spent :-)

A few shots of the skirts in the light. I'm shocked they're made from plastic considering how old they are. I would have thought it would have been fiberglass all the way, but they're a much more flexable plastic.

You can see in the pics where its going to need a bit of repair work but nothing to be put off by. the other sides the same too. It was a bit hard not being able to read the ebay listing lol. Still, it was worth the gamble! I love retro syling !! 8-)

Love the colour of that mk2 shell, is it as straight and solid as it looks?

Good shout on the 6n cable, is it the right length just the wrong end?

  • Author

Yea the mk2 shell is in awesome nick. The worst part of it is the front and slam panels and they're brand new! The colour. Of It is taffeta green which is found on lupos and polos. The paint has reacted to layers underneath tho so it would need a bare metal spray to do it right. I'd love to but I really can't afford it lol.

The cable is slightly to long if anything. There's just a little bit extra between the 2 bulk head grommets. Ill get a photo of it. =)

heres the shot of the extra length on the 6N cable. appart from this, its just the end. you can see how it makes a 's' shape.

Oh yes please karl much appreciated when ever your free ;) !

If anyone needs a thermostat, housing or sender for the ECU, i recommend replacing all 3 together for what it costs using volksbits ebay store. it looks to be a good quality item! I'm gonna go put it on now...very carefully!.....

Booked in for a full custom downpipe back 403 stainless system on saturday! . After its fitted I'm off to the MOT station to see where we stand.

Won't need a cat fool, its a mk2

getting it done at longlife. My main request is that it's mega tucked up so I can finish slamming it lol. And no I definitely won't need the cat so it's lonnng gone =)

Under this year's new mot regs, do you think the rev counter will have to be working? As I've not got around to working out which colour wire from the mk2 loom picked up the signal. Once I find that I can see if it can be wired onto the later style coil pack.

I thought it had to be right for the engine not the vehicle? I cant say I'm up on it though so meh

Getting mine off in a fortnight 8-) Joys of a '91 car :D

goes by the vehicle, which means that as mk3 polos came with a cat as standard, even though yours is before the date of cats bla bla i heard that you would need to keep it!

You need to cut the red/black wire on the back of the clocks(can't remember the pin number on the plug but it's marked KL1 on the circuit board)

Join a wire onto the clocks side of the cut and feed it down to the new style coil. Lift up the small flap that covers the two nuts marked 1 and 15.

Undo the nut marked 1 and join the new rev counter wire to this and all should be good.

Ok cool. well The wire you speak of on the back of the clocks is one of the wires that runs to the bay to the old round coil, so Id imagine its black and red down there too :-) I'll do that tomorrow thanks dude!

Its been quite a busy night in the garage tonight. I've been setting the engine up so its ready for saturday at longlife.

To start with, I run a compression test on all 4 cylinders. The results where pleasing as I had 12 bar on all 4.

IMG_20120213_201224.jpg

then I cut the alloy pipe for the filter and fitted that. at the moment its on the right of the bay, but I will be running it down to the left hand side away from the hot water pipes after the MOT!

Next I filled it up with water, got it up and running, and let it warm up. Got the ignition timing set and tightened the distributor. I left the engine run until it was up to temp just to see if the gauge went up, and to make sure the fan kicked in at the right temp. That all went well so I refitted the bonnet and scuttle tray etc to finish the job.

Heres a shot of the pre MOT completed bay, and a short video of me laughing and whooping that it all runs well lol.

Before and after shot of the bay:

Tomorrow I'm going to whip the downpipe off and cut away the heatshield as its ever so slightly touching the sump, and get the screen wash bottle in place. Oh and i might just treat it to a wash/polish/hoover on friday afternoon too.

Woop Woop! THATS IT ! 8-)

Sorry if I've missed it in an earlier post, are you still running the Mk.2 engine bay loom?

If so then yes, the red black wire should be there already. I have to add the wire on my car as it's running a Mk.3 GT loom and it won't work without it.

Yeah I've kept the entire mk2 wiring. most of it is discreetly hidden as I didnt see any point in cutting it out. Cheers buddy, I'll have a rev counter from tomorrow then. Whens the limited kick in on an afh?

You should have a site coming from the 6n fuse box for the rev counter that just needs plugging to got to the red/black on the clocks

Limiter it about 7k iirc. Glad she's finally running mate

cant you adjust the limiter? it may be due to the carbs, but mines still pulling past 7k!

there's no limiter when using carbs. There are ecu chips which raise the limiter to 8k out there. I think polo ace sells them on here.

Thanks guy. Yea that yellow wire got pulled out at some point and I don't know where it went so ill do it off the coil =)
