  • Yes tis true , I'm not sure why it was such a problem on Higgos ? I could never get the throttle body to reset . I'm sure given enough time to sift through the faults it could be rectified. In Leggy

  • Just checked mine and top and bottom go to the matrix and middle goes to the expansion bottle Now get out there and get it fucking finished!

  • exhaust manifold modded and ready for delivery :-D tho i still think you should get stainless 4 branch manifold and 2" system you cheap ass lol :p heres a present for you

Should only be about a week to run in. And I won't hold you back when you have a go don't worry.

I've not even been out in it and I'm already looking at turbo stuff Lmao. (stop me now),

feel free to lend them to me lol! Exhaust in the morning folks. I'll get to drive it!! WHAAAAAHHHH :-D

another 3 day weekend so I can start work on these skirts and the wheels on monday

cant you adjust the limiter? it may be due to the carbs, but mines still pulling past 7k!
there's no limiter when using carbs.

i know I'm not stupid, i have an aftermarket one. 7k is a bit low i found

I have a full stainless, longlife, downpipe back, single silencer exhaust on my GT.

They did an excellent job of getting it hung nice and tight and it hasn't hit the road once and i'm down about 80m at the front. They also welded a new rear hanger to the underside of my car for no extra cost. Much stronger than the crisp original mounting. With the weight of the exhaust and the money it cost i didn't want it dropping on the floor. Something you might want to mention when you take it in as they might do it for you too being longlife.

Today was a big day for the conversion, and what a success it was. 9AM thismorning I attached the polo to my dads passat in the rain, and set off for longlife on a 8 mile tow. A little jurky but we got there with no issues apart from losing some paint from the towing eye. I was relieved to get there in one piece without police attention

So after a good chat with the fabricator at long life, we decided on the sound, silencers, and the tailpipe, and I let them get on with it. I was very impressed with the level of service and customer involvement as they kept calling me from the waiting room into the workshop. The end result is a very 'tight to body' system with a simplistic roll out tailpipe. Once they'd completed the job and I got to start the car, I was so excited to finally have the afh running properly, but also mega nervous as I had to do the 8 mile run home in an untested car.. Before I go into detail on that, a few pics at the longlife ramps eh?

IMG_20120218_121355.jpg

Notice how tight it sits. No more scraping!

IMG_20120218_121405.jpg

A shot of the car running on the ramps just before I had the keys back. A tad smokey which is just burning off the oil from the build.

IMG_20120218_121502.jpg

So over all I'm extatic with the job they done and would recommend them to anyone. Value for money with a lifetime warranty!

With the keys back in my hand, I had to the most unnerving part of the whole engine build.. Drive the damn thing. I let it run on the spot until it was up to temp, had a fag to settle my increasingly pounding heart rate, and made off for home. For the majority of the journey I didn't accelerate hard enough to get any feel for the power gains as I was just happy it was running and driving problem free. Admittedly though, I did deck the throttle in 3rd gear, only to be filled with disappointment with the acceleration.

Upon arriving home I instantly had the bonnet open to adjust the timing again, and this time, I got it right! Everything you 16v'rs on efi told me is true! when I gave it full beans from a standing start, the torque steer was ridiculous, and the surge of power throughout the whole rev range is just insane for a little polo lol. It flys to 60mph before you realise what's happened ::smile:: And the new exhaust system sounds fantastic at full throttle, yet it's no louder than the stock 1.3 when not under load or sitting at 70 on the motorway.

I did go on and do alot more today, and I could talk about how fun it is to drive all nightbut I've had far too many whiskeys and can't be arsed to copy any more picture links on my phone lol. Seriously though, if anyones considering the conversion, get on the case you won't regret it!

Buzzin 8-)

well after being let loose in this saturday i want one because its awesome can't wait to have another play :-D

Buzzin 8-)

^^ understatement =)

sorted the MOT this morning so I went for a 80 mile drive. The fuel pump is mega loud so I guess I better get another one asap. Did you get your exhaust at longlife aswell dude? Mines nice and quiet when it's not under load, then makes a sweet sound under acceleration. At full beans 5k+, it sounds emence lol

Anyway, here's a quick shot of the new flatcaps on the powetechs. They need smoothing down on the edges, and a hole for a countersunk bolt, and the wheels will be ready for a splash of paint. Thanks for those karl.

Off karlface? Hmm what are they off mate?

They're custom peices made by Rambo_golf(Karl). Made from 3mm alloy on the plasma cutter. Is it you that has the other set of these?

  • Author

I'll have a word for you dude. I know he's busy at the moment as the selector fork has gone in his gear box(golf tdi 150). We had a right mere wriggling that out last weekend.

I'm having motor issues with the AFH already LOL. its back off the road... A horrible squeeling noise from inside the head at lower RPM's, and the new thermo stat isnt opening so thats gotta come out for testing. Oh and the revs will not keep still at idle. surging like a mother *******.

Anyone got a spare engine? I :paranoid: I think Id rather swap for a known working one than try and sort out this squeel as it sounds bloody terrible and was only getting worse. I thought it could have been a dry cam runner but I've checked them and they're all fine.

Wasnt there someone selling a 1.6 hybrid motor not long ago? I cant find his post!

i want your wheels and side skirts! exhaust looks good too, how much its set you back? pm me if you dont feel like putting up the price

Mate that's gay! I had a squeal from the head right before the cam melted to the bearing cups. With it only being at low rpm it could be low oil pressure? When mine died due to this it was because the sump I fitted was dented and blocked off the pickup pipe. Strange squeal that got worse them DONK, cam locked up stalling the engine. There's really not a lot else in the engine that could cause a squealing noise that I can think of tho, have you checked oil pressure?

The idle will more than likely just be that the idle needs resetting, just disconnect the batter for a good half an hour, it gives the ecu a kind of soft reset.

There was a hybrid for sale on here a bit back but briscoe bought it and it turned out to have a load of bent valves that the seller didn't know anything about... Those pesky valve fairies

do u mean a price Inc the cost of the car? prob spent well over 2K. the exhaust was £260 if thats what you meant. I had discount for knowing someone that works there. its all that cost thats foring me to refuse to give up with these new troubles. Its so fustrating as I was on the road on monday enjoying the emence feeling of an efi afh mk2, and now I'm pritty much back at square one. Thanks for the nice comments tho dude, aside to being able to drive it, they help spur me on.

yeah i meant just exhaust, looks a good system  could do with a nicer tip though, maybe a quarter of inch bigger, at an angle and out rolled 8-) well thats what I'm aiming for anyway, not sure I've got a longlife local to me though :?

Well they did offer all you mentioned in the price. I just wanted it stealthy =) google them I'm sure they're everywhere in the UK!

Ah man gay isn't the word! Last night I had the cam cover off and the engine running, and as you say there's not alot else in the head that can sqweel in that way, but there was oil running out of each bearing cap... What colour wire from the mk2 loom do you have on the oil pressure sensor? I dunno how this can be sorted out so a reliable replacement seems the safest option (even though I've spent about 500 on this one) angry much?.. Yes I am lol keep an eye out for a motor for me dude

Guy you say your cam seized up in the head. Is this on a different engine to the one where the roller pulley seized up? =p how many afh engines have u killed man! Is this what I have to look forward too before I find reliability haha

This might be a daft question, but is it possible to tell if my oil pump is direct or chain driven without pulling the sump off? If mines direct drive, ill try a new pump to see if it resolves the noise. If it doesn't, I guess I'm engine shopping.

It was the same engine mate. Roller pulley seized so I just chucked another lump in, when I started on the mk2 I decided to just rebuild the old afh and use that in it but then came the blocked pickup incident. Tbh that was 100% my own stupidity, I didn't have the oil pressure switch wired in and I even remember there being a little gap between the sump and the bottom end before I had done all the bolts up but it didn't even click in my head why this would be or even to look any further into it. It's just one of them silly mistakes that when you look back its like, what the fuck was I doing?

I think the only way to know 100% is to pull the sump off, the original wiring that was on the engine should give you a good idea but I wouldn't rely soley on that as a guide for which oil pump to buy. Have you got no way of testing the oil pressure?

Ok ill get the sump off the weekend and have a gander. I know what you mean about making stupid mistakes, I've done it enough times myself. I'm always work better on other peoples motors!

I've no way of testing the pressure, and I'm not sure if I've got the right wire plugged into it. Originally I had the afh looms wire then realised that's not hooked up to my clocks. So is it the blue or yellow from the mk2 loom for low pressure?

Hats off to how quickly this has all come together, keep at it with once all these problems are ironed out it will be totally worth it.

What are you doing with the NZ engine from your other motor? I pmed you a while ago about some bits I need :)

Single oil pressure switch, blue wire ;)

The Mk.2 clocks need both senders to be rigged up though to work properly. Get hold of a T piece and fit both senders to that(it's how I got round the problem on my 1.6 conversion)
