you'd be better of starting with bike throttle bodies surely?

well the car is alredi got turbo on and everything . was wonderinng if bike carbs would take the preusre . coz i want to do away with injection and shit . iv had nothing but problems with it .

well it will be a lot harder trying to set up bike carbs with a turbo, although there were a few factory turbo'd bikes around the 80's so it can be done.

there would also have to be some custom fabrication in particular a plenum chamber (is that the correct term for it?). there was some one a long long time back that tried this on a G40 engine although i'm not sure if it was turbo'd or still G'd, or even if it had bike carbs or bike throttle bodies. only ever saw a couple of pics of the semi built set up and never heard any thing else of it so no idea how far he got with it.

what is so wrong with you injection set up that you would want to make so much work for yourself trying to do this? surely if it's properly set up and mapped correctly it shouldn't give you much trouble?

its not been maped tbh . its just got 5th injector on atm iv only just done turbo to it . but one inejector wasent spraying now there is two there is fuel getting to it also power but no spray .iv been playing with it for weeks now and getting no where . and i can get carbs easy and my mate is a proffesional welder so making the inlet manifold and so on wouldent be a problem . i just wonders if would kill the carbs doing so lol

when i looked into this from what i found out best way was to make it so the carbs thn turbo then inlet, as carbs work on a vacuum. which easiest way is to get a big twin weber. whats what the supercharged old mini lot do

what do you mean when you say carb then turbo then inlet ? and i have a webber on my jeep ?

It's more hassle and cost I would say. You have to seal them properly in a plenum and then sort out all sorts of other fuelling issues (like your fifth injector). There was a thread around Xmas about it. Tbh, you'd be better spending the money on a professional taking a look t your injection system. Plus the carb set up would be inferior to a properly mapped dedicated turbo set up

What had been described above is a suck through method, where the turbo pulls air through the carb, picking up fuel on the way. You have to mount the turbo on the other side of the block though on a small block polo, or else have a really long intake. Again, inferior. A supercharger us better for this suck through method since you are les restricted as to where you can mount them, so long as you can get drive for it, it'll work. You need to right sort of charger though for this. Roots iirc

If your determined to run carbs, you could use a Renault 5 turbo carb with custom inlet. Just need to find one :?

tbh i dont have the mony to get pro people to take a look i know a bit my self but not enuf to know if they work together . i used to run bike carbs on my ax gt and set that up my self was mint. but sounds like its not a case of fitting carbs setting them up and makeing a pipe to feed all 4 carbs from the turbo and it working .

You can run bike carbs with a turbo, look at the R5GTT, 200+ BHP in some cases, this would not be job for the faint hearted though, nor someone who isn't willing to constantly readjust the carbs for optimum fuelling for safety and best power. Without knowing the car, ITB Manifold (no butterflies) + Plenum will give you the best power and can be mapped with consistant results.

so if I'm going to do this what will i need ? + do to make this work properly . and i know its not a easy job but i dont mind a challanage ? so time and so on is no problem to me tbh . its just a case of knowing what i need and so on to make work befor i start and find out i need this that and the other and costing me a mint . wich i do not have lol .

Easiest would be Renault 5 turbo crb since its a carb designed for turbos. But as I said, it's finding one. If you went this route, all I can see you'd nee is the carb and custom inlet. An intercooler would be a good idea, I wouldn't want to run hot pressurised air through a fuel source

alredi have intercooler and so on in its all done that way only thing id need to do then is carb and inlet and plumb it in ?

Hi, It can be done and it is largely a case of just setting them up.

And they dont need to be housed inside a plenum.

You would need to fabricate a plenum with a dump valve mounted on it, but the upper vents on the carbs need to be connected directly to the plenum or to a pitot tube to give the carbs a pressure reference.

Sorry if my post was unclear, I didn't mean the carbs would need to be in a plenum, but a plenum with injectors works better than open carbs (boost sealed). As previously stated carbs in the NA sense are only driven by vacuum, add boost and you require a totally new world of pain! EFi can cope with is change very easily using MAF and MAP depending on the Electronics setup. To avoid bypassing these systems, welcome the injection control and use a plenum.

Hope that clears it up.

what is plemurm ?

There should be no reason to keep readjusting the carbs once they are setup properly.

Ideally you do need Turbo Needles in the carbs, but they will work happily on boost.

so list wise of to do this . what exsactly do i need to fit them make them work with the turbo i alredi have on my afh engine ? then i can do a price about . thanks everyone for input

Not a clue what that bit between carbs and the head is for, looks a bit like the adapter plate I've got but it seems to have water pipes on it.

The setup I have planned is a direct replacement for the airbox plate on the carb, so is roughly the same shape as that in the picture but with out the pipes.

and thats all i need to do . is what i thought id need to do . is make a box to link all carbs together insted of by there selfs and run the pipe from intercoller into that box . ?

Carbs do need tweeking, it's a fact as carbs are old news, sad but true.Every 5GTT we get through the door needs tweeking. Our dyno Lambda drops out in the 9's and they are often dropping out having been set within 6 months! A proper ECU setup and Efi can control this more efficiently imho and for less cost.

Would you go back to Windows 3.11 now? However some would argue Windows XP is still the best, and so it goes on. The noise, passion and result from the carb setup will be gratifying but the plenum, body and injectors setup will give more power, every time whilst remaining consistant.

so other words you recomend to just stick with injection

Yep. The setup is the same as on a normal turbo car.

As its blow thru you can use an intercooler.

I was planning to go down the Turbo route but a practically new Eaton came up cheaply.

Yes, instead of carbs, do plenum, not don't go for more power, thats always good!
