Is there any difference between a Service Technician and a Mechanic ?? (applying for a job)

Its not a stupid question - it was all shaken up in recent years to glamorise job titles and i think its stupid.

Like a Hygiene technician,which is a cleaner. What's wrong with being a cleaner? Here's one - patronizing pen pusher.

i used to be a "DRIVERS ASSISTANT" lol just sit and watched the road basically a part time labourer???

i was a drivers mate for a few weeks on a work experience thing at school,which is the same as above

so mind numbingly boring isnt it

had my feet up on the dash,smoking the day away,certainly beated being at school lol

and i got payed £15 at end of week :-D i gave up wagging school just to earn that £15 lol

but more on topic,the names they give as job titles is just a manager,or assistant to a managers way of maknig out there doing something usefull for the company

so if a director or chairman snouts around they get impressed by the titles,hygiene technician rather than cleaner as an example

if they are not doing that then they are passing the book down,sacking ect

hahaha, well atleast I'm clear.. makes it sounds soo silly. Id rather be known as a mechanic ( trained proffesion) rather than service technician that no one even knows what it is.. lol

I'm a mechanic at Peugeot, were called technicians but its pointless as we call ourselves mechanics and when customers come in they always ask for a mechanic... Can't say I've ever heard a customer say can i see a technician, only used by bosses etc

At my work the general run of the mill storeman are now called "Materials Operatives" Why do companies feel the need to make all jobs seem better than what they really are? Suppose it could sound more professional.

No ones really thought about the work themselves? They might want to be called something a little more snazzy so that they can slap it onto their CV and look more diserable to other employers.

It's a win win for employers to attract new staff and for old staff to attract new employers!

its a load of bollocks. in my weekend job I'm a 'senior sales represantative' aka a cashier whose ben there longer than a month.

Sounds like my old job, we went from being Merchanidsers to "Field Support Assistants". My comment that it made me sound like a cabbage picker didn't go down well.

So I rebranded myself as a "Lateral Storage Recalibration and Loading Technician*"

*Someone who puts shelves up and fills them with tins of beans.
