no don't do it. Never cut your springs you get a realy bouncy ride and its also an MOT fail.

it wont be going through mot with them on anyway will have a proper set by then, hopefully coilys or similar kit, jus wondered if it would be any good as a temp solution

Ye it will be fine, just remove the coil from the bottom of the spring.

From my research you can take 2 coils from the rear and 1.5 from the front

That is one coil from both front and rear

Just cut them off in small bits as they can be a pita to remove a whole coil, and cool the spring as you cut

Cut springs are fine as long as they dont rattle around when the cars jacked up - will pass an mot fine on them :)

I'm selling lowering springs for £25, buy them and do it 'properly' (well properly would be coilovers but these will do)

Mk2 but I'm pretty sure they are the same, can someone confirm? Collection only unfortunately as I can't be bothered to post. 70mm drop.

Fair enough.

70mm on standard shocks will shag the shocks pretty quick as you'll be riding the bumps. By all accounts chop are fine as long as it's a coil it so. Standard shocks will cope with around a 50 drop. Think that's what mikeymk was running. Have you considered lowering tip mounts from fk for a further 10-15mm.

Got the record, mk2 and mk3 are compatible. Same with mk1 springs. Shocks too

If you hadn't chopped too much off the spring it would be fine. It's posts like this that mislead people on the the subject of chopping springs, its not the chopped springs giving you your problems, its the fact that you chopped too much off the spring.

chopping your springs is fine, any one saying its dangerous is talking absolute bullshit.

i'm running chopped lowering springs with uprated shocks for over 30000 miles and it handles brilliantly and has never given me any problems with the mot.

they "can" be dangerous, a spring becoming mis-seated at say 70mph is never going to be good.

I know a mate who rolled his mk2 golf gti due to chopped springs.

But these inceidents will only happen when you go silly low on with them.. to the point where theres not point having a spring.

Thing is, i rolled around in a mk3 beleaving that it was on a 40mm kit, not knowing it was on chopped springs. I never even noticed till it was on the ramps

it's all in the preload, as that limits the amount you can chop off.

if you chop off more than the preload, your in trouble because the spring will be loose when the car is jacked up or goes over a bump and can become unseated!

Matt chopped springs do not just make cars roll over

If he rolled his golf it was because he was driving like a noob, my old mk2 gti had a proper lowering kit and when jacked up the springs would fall out of the cup, that never inexplicably rolled over while I was driving it and a ragged the nuts out of that thing round lanes. I've also had cars with chopped springs that never without warning rolled over for no apparent reason.

If the type of spring set up you have on a early polo or golf unseats where is it going to go? Nowhere because there's a shock running straight up the middle of it preventing it from falling out, the worst you will get is a 'twang' through the steering wheel as it reseats itself.

People use excuses like that to save face because they know they fucked up, like people that try to claim that there must of been oil on the road and that's why they crashed, even tho no ones else seems to be having an issue on the same bend
