when doing a prong chop......do you chop off the top or bottom of the spring?

well i have 60mm springs on the front with an extra coil chopped off so about 80mm now and it has been through an mot no probs with them on!

i had a look at doing it today and thought if i am to take it all apart to cut a bit off the spring i may aswell wait and fit a complete suspension kit, maybe a philj kit? these any good?

well, someone following him watched the whole thing, they where going round a bend and the rear of the mk2 dropped and lost traction.

I wouldn't go for a philj kit personally. I had one (different brand, same product) and it was a too harsh ride. If your only going 60/40 I'd get lowering springs front and back (-40mm) use your standard shocks. Chop half a coil off the front and then get those lowering top mounts. The top mounts are basically a stripped down version of the normal top mount - less meat on them so they sit lower

This topic,obviously a repost,is usually a tin of worms and here's why..

1) Chopping one coil from the bottom of the mentioned Polo coil springs will lower it around 20-30mm. It will be perfectly safe. It will not induce considerable extra wear on any other components. It will pass an MoT.

2) Fitting proper quality 60mm lowered springs to said car can be dangerous,as they will come loose if the suspension is fully opened,because they're too short. It will wear the standard dampers considerably more quickly. It will fail an Mot.

So anyone saying chopped springs are dangerous are full of speculation. But you have to know what you're doing. You have to do your maths. Cut both springs identical,and with a thin cutting wheel,rapidly.

As a rule on this car,you dont chop more than 1.5 coils from the front on standard dampers,and said standard spec dampers should be new over ones that have 'memoried' under existing stroke levels.

Those saying the spring must still sit tight are hitting the spot. There is pre-load on the spring seated in the strut,most of this can be removed but dont take it out altogether - if the spring isn't tight in the strut when you bolt it back together,then you've cut too much off.
