ah-ha, J738 AHJ. Was my first experience of G-smiles about 6 years ago when karen had it. I very nearly bought it but couldn't raise funds in time. Iirc it's had a complete respray since she owned it (possibly at a main dealer?) It was featured in the March 2004 issue of VW Motoring.

the recentish dealer respray fits in with all the bits of gossip I've gathered about it. showing some very minor rust and bubbling already, so does need a bit of attention sometime soonish

I've had a very brief look at the feature when i viewed it, but mag has disappeared and haven't tracked down a new one yet.

aha good plan, less than a month after my 21st i got one, the wait from 18 when i saw my first G felt very long.

could see the appeal with having a conversion with the pride of a job well done, though with the price demanded by GTs (only say 1k less than an original G40 in similar cond) could be worth doing the conversion on a lower spec shell or going for an original.

tho for me it was simple, i wanted to buy into the limited edition nature of the originals in the UK and didnt want to settle for owt else

had to shell out for a new battery, the old one getting me away from home but giving up the ghost after having the engine off for 5mins, for a fun wait for the RAC in the cold :(

on another note, anyone have a scan of the feature this got? can't find a copy of the mag, and literally only seen the article as a flash for a few seconds, would be curious to take a proper look...

OEM G40 boot liner

Have you got a picture of your boot? I've never seen a lined boot on a polo, just the side carpets on some coupes.

as requested, the boot, it's nothing too fancy but much nicer than the rubber liner.

yes you did :-D went in on tuesday, i'm incredibly anxious to get it back and go for a drive

Thought I recognised it! What's the quality of the work like there? Whenever I've spoken to the guys there they just seem really unhelpful and disinterested!

  • Author

well the guy i spoke to seemed keen enough, but as to the quality of the work i'm about to find out, as the place i was going to take the work to didn't fancy it in the end despite saying a few times that they'd do it.

Just found out I have the wrong kind of gearbox for running my diff, did not know there were two different boxes for the mk3 g40, GUTTED

either get hold of an ATV asap or get some custom work done on it...

I'm 99.9% sure there aren't two G40 gearboxes, but yours may have been replaced with an 8p at some point along the way? That sucks man :-(

  • Author

might be right about that, as in this article (misread it at first):

diff fitting

it's the sort with a pressed diff and no bolts to put the quaife onto the crown wheel,

so it's one of a normal mk3? this whole thing is very confusing (got the guy doing it to find the code, he says its an 8n which suggests a 1.3 mk2 golf i think :? )

on a more cheerful note, my latest acquisition, have wanted these for a while :)

Owwh man I'm so jealous! I want some too :-(

broken mk3 fogs? also grungeisdead has a ATV box for sale.... ;)

well not in perfect condition, but should still work fine.

in touch with him, will hopefully have it soon :-)

Haha i saw it again today on the way past! Are you having the diff fitted at trackspeed too?

he probably mistaked it for an 8p, which is a mk2 box (well mine came with one anyway)

they've sent that off to a gearbox specialist who only really deals with garages, but i have been to see him to work out the exact problems, the place he works in was wall to wall gearboxes.

time for an over due update,

the quaife diff is in and does indeed make a huge difference as expected, so far no matter what i do wheel spin is non existent, and seems more controlled in the bends. the helix clutch kit is so much better, tho making a comparison is tricky as the old one was knackered, but no more buzzing up to full revs on full boost without gaining any speed :)

the subframe is still to go on as the garage it went to said it was too short to reach the fixing points between the TCAs, going to investigate this claim myself at some point as they were not the most competent. For example, when i got the car back the solid uprated arb bushes had been refitted differently so that the holes for the bar was at the front on one block and the rear on the other, which had the effect of pushing one wheel really far forward in the arch and the other right to the back and made my steering horrendous. not only this but the bar itself was fitted upside down so that it rubbed on the exhaust manifold, was far from impressed after having waiting a ridiculous length of time for it to be done.

fixed that myself in the end after much swearing at bolts that did not want to line up with their sockets.

on the plus side have got my fogs on and some new plate surrounds, as well as currently wearing amber indicators on a trial basis, the debadged grill is not to my taste any more but on temporarily because some knob decided to nick the VW of my normal one, typical...

another addition that i'm rather pleased with is a momo montecarlo steering wheel, to anyone who knows this wheel i believe it's a bit unusual as it's 320mm but has the thinner (more attractive imo) spoke design of the 350...

(oh and ignore the mountney horn push which is just borrowed till i have a momo replacement, tho feel rather reluctant to pay the £20+ price tag for a bit of plastic)

DSCN2112.jpg

had a bit of a weight saving session today and shaved 20kg without removing any seats, although a lot of this will have to back in for any long distance journeys.

also have some new wheels in the pipeline, maybe even two sets if ebay is kind :) smaller pulley in post too, just couldn't resit :D

Nice one buddy!

I'll know not to take my car anywhere near Trackspeed then

I have heard of Subframes not sitting quite properly due to the Chassis inevitably deforming slightly over the years.

  • Author

cheers dude :)

i won't be going back there, the whole arb thing and piss taking when it came to time management spoilt the decent work they did on the rest.

yeah thats what I've read about the subframe. wondered if anyone has any tips if it really won't fit?

also if anybody has a spare vw badge for the front grill that they'd like to sell to me, let me know

been a while since anything went up or even posted on CP.

its been off the road for a bit as when i added the pulley and was checking everything over i saw that one of the oil lines for the oil cooler had started leaking oil and quite rapidly too.

ended up taking far to long getting it sorted but got there eventually, was delayed quite a bit when i had to get a new cooler kit in addition to the new hoses i had already bought, as this happened :?

DSCN2428.jpg

and the other hose got stuck on the sandwich plate :x

the new oil cooler does seem to have brought some benefit, even on more power, i'm pretty sure the coolant temp is running lower than before, presumably the old one had become a bit clogged up.

It's good to be back on the road, on the plus side the time away has made me less accustomed to the speed, so lots of extra Gsmiles :D
