Well i thought it was about time i posted something up , I've had my Gt since 2005 , was standard when i bought it for £350 ! . Over that time its had most of the running gear replaced , new fuel tank, brakes, suspension and engine. I'm hoping its going to be a bit more reliable this year so i can get started on making it look a bit nicer paintwork wise , bonnet paint is pretty much shot and the hatch is suffering from severe laquer peel too. Luckily i break m2fs in my spare time so always have plenty of spares knocking about , I've a set of vw11 calipers and discs waiting to go on ,and future plans may include the afh however it my take a back seat this year as i have mk2 waiting in the barn. Cheers for looking all comments welcome, Mark

Still love you.   whats occurring then mate ?

  • I'm in the turbo, taking the photo

  • yep we are getting there slowly Ben , seen a few pics of yours looking good Dude . Mind you Max my initials are MDG even better . Otherwise got the car taxed yesterday and got a few miles under it

Looking good pal!

looking good mate, what are the plans for the van?

  • Author

@ Martin , cheers dude, hopefully we can catch up for the swap soon.

@ Guy , hopefully the Gt will be sorted now for a while just a couple of niggly little bits to sort out then i can make a start on the van . Will be a bare shell rebuild, I've slowly been stripping it over the last year, engine is out , wings are off and the bay loom is out. Considering it was festering in a damp garage for over 10 years it has survived remarkably well , oh and I'm the third owner! Cheers Mark.

Gt wise "new "clutch in :ninja: and starter motor so no more annoying nnnneeeeeerrrrrrr noises , new alternator belt which is annoyingly randomly squealing like a piggy, awaiting the new gearbox selector bush and seal to arrive , neighbours will be pleased! I snapped a bolt in the manifold to decat pipe when fitting but i have 2 spare manifolds both with a snapped stud in though , so that will be a fun job . Lol it never ends! Mark

i like the mk3... the wheels look cool :)

hows it run with the abd compared 2 standard?

mark i've been thinking about that starter motor you had that didn't work, if it is the illusive thin starter that every one wants for the AFH conversion it would still be worth a few quid even if it don't work. it only cost about £25 (well the last time i heard any way) for a place around here to refub them and considering how hard it is to get one at all it's got to be worth some thing to some one surely?

just a random thought that been going round my head today

Ha ha , it would help if i wired them up correctly! I realised this when i took the replacement one off again! The thinner one is currently fitted and works a treat , if i can be bothered ill put the replacement fat one back on and rape an afh convert if I'm skint  as usual i blundered in ! Not to mention the bush that i butchered out before ordering the new one! Mark

doh!

at least it's all sorted now mate, and if you do decide to go the afh route you have the best starter motor for it

Cheers mabbo, i really like the wheels too and i would highly recommend the uniroyals to anyone , camskills tyres are selling these for around £50 each which i think is a bargain! Abd wise , its still running the abd head and cam because the stem seals have gone in the head so i dont want to fit the gt cam as it burns too much oil at the minute and is a bit tappy sometimes , i have the gt head and cam currently being rebuilt, it does go well though, definatley more low down grunt than the 3F , Cheers Mark

Really like the look of the mini g60's and the colour on this mate.

There's plenty I need lol

Yeah I think I'm going to spring fest.

Mark, looking good!

There's a chap at work who rebuilds starters in his spare time, if you ever want one doing (or even your old one, cleaning out the clutch dust will stop the 'neeeeer'!) just let me know. I think it'd be about £10-15. They occasionally come up on eBay fully refurbed for £20 though.

For alternator belts I've found GSF, ECP and Halfords belts are slightly thinner with a different tooth profile than VW belts. For some reason, all GSF/ECP/Halfords belts make a bit of a 'belt' noise (hard to describe, easiest to hear at low speeds with the window open) no matter what the tension on both my coupe and the gf's bready. If slack the noise would be less but occasionally squek like a piggy as the belt slipped - particularly first thing in the cold.

VW belts however, do not make any noise and sound very peaceful in comparison!! Where's your belt from?

Go on, what did you do fro a clutch? ;)

  • Author

Cheers chris, ill let you know about the starters, I've no idea what happened with the alternator belt, first replacement was a new QH one, couldnt get it to stop squealing and then it snapped on the way to work. Id had a spare better alternator for a while that id been meaning to fit so swapped it over , new QH belt and its been fine since?

Clutch was just a second hand one again, I'm too poor to buy a new one

Otherwise new selector shaft seal and bush fitted , no more leaks and feels a bit smoother , and will be fitting some g-laderseite arb blocks in the near future, Mark

Who gave this thread five stars!! So where were we? Right yes abd bottom end , id been rocking the abd for a while albeit with the abd head and cam which went reasonably well but did smoke a little on the overun ,i bought another gt lump recently so whipped the head off that to go onto the abd hoping it was the valve stem seals that were causing the smoke , this is what i found on taking the head off....

SDC12300.jpg

not the best and this was the result after a little clean up

SDC12304.jpg

Put it all back together, could of joined the red arrows with the amount of blue smoke following me!

So this weekend abd bottom end is out , bores are awash with oil , GT bottom end and head back in and no blue smoke whatsover so think we can safely say the rings in the abd are fooked , this would be all well and good if it wasnt all coming back out again in a months time ready for the AEE conversion which hopefull will be running at the GTI fest , which i also managed to pick up a pair of part worn Dunlop slicks ready for the strip £10 ebay bargain! Oh and bought this alittle while ago , was going to use it for parts for mine totally standard indian red GT , was far too good too break so its now Mrs Burts Daily . :-)

SDC12290.jpg

AEE ready for GTI Fest :p sounds good mate, lets hope we can be second time lucky and fix mine!

Common as muck these indian reds ! AEE conversion starts tommorow will it be ready for sunday ? Place your bets!

  • 2 weeks later...

This impressed me the most out of all the cars we took down the strip!

How's it going then? Really glad WE got it running in the end :-D

Also what time did you run pal?

  • Author

I see what you did there ;) , i wasnt that happy on the day but on reflection we got it running ok and it put in some consistent runs . 17.1 was the best run with a reaction time of 0.1392 .

I think the manifold is still leaking slightly and the exhaust was blowing a little too , regarding the manifold i used a nz manifold which has smaller pipes than a gt inlet , wether i chop up a gt one or make one I'm not sure yet , also its still fitted with gt injectors I've hopefully got some golf ones coming soon.

Cheers Mark

I'd still check if the inlet manifold is leaking. As it sounded like it was running lean.

Where you get the bastuck from?

Yeah theres more work to be done, i got the full system from Regal Autosport . Did you get a look at mine on sunday? It is straight through from the cat/decat pipe to a single backbox which is quite large! I like it because its not too noisy but it was pricey when i bought it , even worse now

I think this could be an animal with the bigger injectors anf if you sort out the possible air leaks and such

I thought the gt injectors were pretty high rated by the way?

As in enough to fuel upto 150 odd bhp?

I would see if poloace do a suitable chip, get it mapped properly to fuel the new displacement.

Also, id defiantly get a high lift cam in there, it set my mh on fire!

Really good way to go though this, much better than an afh!

It's also good at splattering oil and other shit if you're standing too close

I've always wondered how to do multiquotes! Like i say does need some tweaking , i too thought the injectors should be able to cope , apparently they are good for about 115 bhp.

I do have a chip , but i changed ecu,s to see if it made any difference to the running and forgot to change it back

Should hopefully have some to time to fiddle on Saturday see what can be done.

Otherwise i would appreciate peoples input on this...... if i was to make a complete manifold from scratch should i look to be keeping it a similair size and shape to the gt one , would there be any advantage in a bigger "plenum" chamber as such and also the sixe of the port runners?

Cheers for looking Mark
