sorry mark i was in a mess and saw it was blue and figured you may be something special like admin!

Done anything with the injectors yet?

I have the same set up as you awaiting to go in my Mk.2 saloon(removed from my written off Mk.2 Coupe S)

Most of it when I originally fitted it back in 2005 was trial and error.

I settled on injectors from a Vauxhall Cavalier 1.8,(early to mid 90's shape) which are 172cc, a nice compromise between GT and G40. It's also running a GT cam and a modified GT inlet manifold, through an 8P box.

Exhaust is stock G40(decat downpipe extended by 20mm) and chip is one of Dan Barnes items.

I was never going for all out power, but it runs pretty well. Best 1/4 mile was 16.2 and power was 104bhp - 126lb/ft.

It might make it to the RR day, but the car is in so many bits right now so the G will be running instead :-(

Be interesting to see what yours does on the rollers next month with the current spec :-)

Hello again Mr 86c , weirdly i was thinking today you may be able to help with a couple of questions i have?

To be honest I've not done anything to it as the battery is goosed and the M.O.T is out which will be shortly rectified , once this new year malarky is out the way ill get back on it . I had lost a bit of enthusiasm with it but having a break from as worked wonders , I've been a bit ill as well but anyho.

What i plan to do is get this current set up working the best i can and go from there, i used a NZ manifold which as you know has thinner runners than a gt one , i made a slight mistake with the manifold flange design on the first one but have another GT manifold for the revised design.

I did try upping the fuel pressure to 3.5 bar but couldnt get it to run right on part throttle , injectors would be next to try , i have a snap on scan gas anaylzer which i know is not perfect but does indicate lean running. A proper wideband afr meter may shortly be appearing.

I do also have the DCC gearbox to try as well , 1st 2nd and 3rd gear wheeelspins without really trying get a bit tedious after a while , it does go well in a torquey way! but would be nice to see some numbers at the rolling road day , it pulls from really low revs but just seems to run out of puff to quickly.

I have a gt cam as well to try , i believe i need a vernier pulley to fit it though? I had also been researching ways to get rid of the vane air flow meter , seems people have been trying with no success for years  , I'm thinking standalone management is the way to go really with a better motor  .

Was gutted to see your yellow one being written off , i dread to think what id do if happened to this :x .

Anyway cheers for positive comments , makes it seem worthwhile  Cheers Mark

Mine isn't running a vernier pulley, just a stock one with an extra mark I made on it for the cam timing ;)

I too had a problem with midrange running, light throttle around 2000rpm. Turns out it was the throttle pot. Many are old and tired now and suffer from the same problem. I got lucky that the last used one I bought was a replacement part and wasn't that old. Mk.3 Golf ones don't work either, even though they fit(I think the internal resistance values are different)

The Golf AFM on mine is set up by me and runs just fine, although I have thought about trying to change it for a MAF jobby though at some point as the E24 Beemer guys in America have had good results(but that's from a dedicated kit of parts, which goes against my way of thinking of raiding existing car parts bins and just trying it with little or no research, lol)

I have to admit, I am a fan of these engines, even though they aren't high revving screamers. Mine is done by 5500rpm. It'll do more but there's no point, hence why I like the big gearbox(110mph at 5k and it's quite happy)

Keep firing the questions across and I'll help where I can ;)

I wanted to ask if you had a pinout diagram for the 2 plugs near the fusebox, I'm toying with the idea of wiring in the aee ecu which i believe is map based ? Interestingly it is the same ecu used on the AFH the only differences i can see are the injectors and throttle body.

Regarding the afm , i think in the last 2 weeks I've been on every forum around the world for cars that use the vane meter! Short of spending 3 to 400 quid on a signal convertor i dont think it can be done ? The vane air meter doesnt output a linear scale i think, whereas maf does, any thoughts on the burn off feature ? or just keep it clean! An early lucas 5am maf sensor was the closest thing i could find output wise from a rover v8  .

I must do some multi metering on the vafm to confirm , did you change the spring getting on the golf vafm ? Any thoughts on a larger vafm from a porsche , bmw etc ?

*edit* I'm pretty sure the golf throttle pot works backwards i.e. 5v - 0v the gt is 0v- 5v .

Yeah, I did alter the spring setting as it's too tight when set up for a Golf(typically 2 notches but not always) which gives a weaker mixture.

Again, there's a how to guide on one of the Beemer forums(the joys of running an old 6 series) to set up the Bosch air flow meters and I've been using the same method for many years now with good results. Must dig it out.

As for using larger AFM's, the Golf one is more than man enough. Bigger than that isn't better(I did try the Beemer one for experimental purposes but I knew beforehand it was a daft idea)

Have PM'd you ;)

I think mark may of seen the light :paranoid:

Not in the van  , should be with the GT as long as the M.O.T is an easy one ,you going? and what in?

Please tell me your just gonna stick the engine in and roll it like that? Proper sleeper

I will be there mark in the blue mk1, I have to agree with guy too, that would be awsome!

Truly fantastic plan Mark!
