Undisclosed claim on insurance con

Featured Replies

Hi to keep it short and sweeet, i paid for my insurance annually three months ago 1.500 grand

Now i had a letter stating i have a undisclosed claim from last year,

Last year i had a fire on my car that was never claimed for off my insurance infact it went to the tat man for hundread quid, no pay out from my insurance,

Now I'm with a different insurer and there saying there was an undisclosed claim and want an extra 600 quid

I had my no claims bonus through, should i blag it and say there was no fire or should i be truthful and say there was no claim made? Also do insurance have access to your police files? Ie if i blagged it could they ask the police if there was a fire and get that info?

Cheers

It doesnt matter if you made a claim/received a settlement or not. The fact is, if you check the smallprint of your policy documents you will find that it says if there is anything that could amount to a claim, you dont tell them, and they find out-they will screw more money out of you.

How do I know this?

It happened to me, some *%£$ poured paintstripper all over two of my cars and I phoned the insurance company to ask for advice, to see if it was going to be worth my while claiming.

I never claimed, never received any payment and I was careful that the company didnt inccur any expense as a result of the incident or my subsequent actions and I didnt think anymore about it until I renewed my insurance with a cheaper company and after I had paid up, they did the above to me.

Luckily due to my age and experience the amount was only £40.

So basically alrhough i never claimed its still classed as a "claim"

Is it worth my while Trying to blag it then as they cant really prove this unless they go into police

Files really which arent public domain are they?

Thats a joke well i could do em really couldnt i for sending through a no claims bonus and misleading me to purchase insurance???

Anyone got any more thoughts on this to help me out?

I would just take it on the chin mate and learn from it.

Seems that as money gets tighter and there is more competition out there, insurance companies are looking to screw more money out of people, sadly its the likes of people that cant afford to lose it. They have you in the smallprint everytime. I had to fight to keep my full no claims bonus. They also screw people with installment schemes. il always try to pay in full so i dont get shafted, no so easy for you young'uns with circa £1500 premiums!

I wouldn't take it on the chin. You didn't claim... you received no money/repair from the last insurance company. Speak to you new insurance company and say this happened but I did not claim, therefore I didn't see the need to inform you of it. It might be in the small print but it not right.

Fight it and see what happens... what the worst that could happen? Don't lie though, the files are not public domain but are available to insurance companies.

you need to disclose any claims or 'accidents' regardless of whether you actually claimed or not.

if you are stupid enough to tell your insurance and not claim, then you deserve to be dry bummed to be honest!

personally if you wont lose too much cancelling your policy, id do that and start a new one, youll probably get a far cheaper price

it happened to me!!! so i phoned my insurance up and said that i haven't made any claims. the insurer said they will look into it, phoned me up the next day and said that they made a mistake and removed it from my records. :-D

Lets hope tgey phone me up today and say theyll remove it lol

Grungeisdead i told them as i had insurance on a car that wasnt viable to drive and they said i never had a valid claim neways so if this is the case them they surley cant try an say theres a claim as no money exchanged hands, and if thats what small print states no one on this earth would say about an unrecorded accident and they dropped a boob neway giving me a years no claim making me buy insurance under the pretences of this

I'm not gonna hand over 600 quid id rather cut my loses and get my remainder of my policy reimburssed and go else where, thing is with insurance there so vague in what they actually insure u for or what they require as unrecorded accidents with no blame shouldnt be classsed as a claim as no money was exchanged

Ill phone the fsa today and see what they have to say on it an post up

its clear as day when you go through your insurance quotes on the internet or phone

Have you had ANY accidents or claims in the last 5 years?

your best bet is just to switch insurers.

i failed to disclose an accident i had a few years back as nothing had ever come out of it, no letters from insurers nothing 3 years later, when performance direct found out about it, they phoned me up to say they were cancelling the policy!

sucks ass but you just gotta deal with it.

FSA are a bunch of fuckwits too, if you can be arsed with the argue you can pursue it, but trust me lifes too short dude, just change insurers probably get a cheaper premium and you can continue living hassle free

Thanks Saf!

Didnt think I was being stupid, just asking the company what my options were. Like this chap has found out, I didnt know any incidents had to be disclosed and were counted as 'claims' even if you didnt claim, else i wouldnt have bothered. I bet there are shit-loads of smallprint traps in peoples policies, you wouldnt know unless you went through them with a fine-toothed comb or were 'stupid' enough to get caught out.

I did all that, trust me.

Said I would seek legal advice and was told I would be wasting my time as it was covered in my policy terms.

Like many, I thought a claim was a claim, ie, actually submitting a claim for financial reimbursement for loss or damage.

Yep, I learned the hard way.

dont worry man, i fully feel stupid for telling them about a knock i had that was claimed outside of the insurance.

however its day light robbery that they can hold it against you, especially as it cost them nothing, and you cant be responsible for someone hitting into you, yet somehow fault or no-fault, they will use it as an apparent viable excuse to levy up your premiums.

another reason to move to canada!

Spoke to the insurancs today and iv sent over my ncd cert and got my old insurance to say that there was no claim open aparently theres was a "active" claim on my insurance which has now been closed whi h was the reason why it came up :/ well c the out come, ill post it up, ps ill come canada lol

When I ranted at my old insurance company, they informed me of a register that your details sit on in the event of a claim. This then flags up your details to other insurers for the next five years. Nice.

In this situation you should be able to tell the insurance that the claim is "notify only". Basically means that you have told them there was an incident but not actually claimed. Shouldnt really make any difference to a quote.

And yeah there is a National Insurance Database that holds details up to 10 yeasrs old, not all insurers are on it though so its kinda pot luck as to whether or not your insurer used it.

no but there is such a thing as C.U.E Claims Underwrighting Exchange which ALL insurers have accsess to. and this holds ALL claims infiormation for ALL people on the road whic have had an accident or claim

tbh tho, its not in small print, its not hidden, they ask it quite clearly on the phone and on the internet, its upto the punter make sure they give all the info.

EH?

To be honest i wouldnt claim on my insurance! I drive scrap heaps less than £4k so no claim is worth while. I remember my first car was a fair few years ago (7) and i rolled my car several times i never told the insurance company about this just took it on the chin at the end of the day it was only a £3k car.

When you claim you have to do 5 calculations to see it it is worth while claiming and taking it through the insurance company.

Calc 1

Enter all your details for a new policy pretending that you have just claimed this year mark down how much your policy has gone up

Calc 2

Same as above but now you are 1 year older and your claim was a year older

Calc 3

Same as above but your now 2 years older and yr claim was 2 years ago

Calc 4 & 5

Do the same again

Have a look what your policy is now say £1,500 and say it stayed the same for 5 years (which it wouldnt it normally drops)

so thats £7,500

Where as you claim and yr insurance goes up 800 the first year 600, 2nd year after £500 , 3rd year £300, 4th year £200, 5th £50

So after 5 years you have had to pay and extra £2450 ontop of your £7,500 and your car has now become Cat c or d registered as the insurance company has repaired it there fore your car has become worthless too.

The ONLY time you pay more on your insurance is if you buy an insane car and get caught speeding! =(

Hope this helps some of you to decide when it is worth while to claim on your insurance :)
