Hi there folks,

Well i sold my car with my private plate but informed the lady i will be keeping the private plate so will swap everything and then pass the documents once i have done this.

I let the car go, kept the documents but so much has happened over the passed few months that i have been unable to swap everything round, so she has applied and recieved new V5 document for the car and the plate was still on at that time. i still have the legal reg document to show i bought the plate but how can i get my plate back??

I haven't spoke to her about it yet, but if she was to be stuborn about it, how do i stand on getting it back??

the plate as far as i know has no link to her as its my name pretty much.

Ring the DVLA and ask them?

In the DVLA's eyes, you sold the car with the plate assigned to it, so you've got no means for recourse with them.

If you can substantiate your version of the agreement that the plate is returned to you, then you may have success if you begin legal proceedings.

To be fair though - you should have taken the plate off before selling, rather than putting it down to trust and luck.

I done the same thing on my golf mk4 a few years ago.

Legally and in accordance with the dvla the number plate is no longer yours because it wasnt removed prior to selling the car and number plates are assigned to cars and not people.

In the long and short of it if you phone the dvla they will tell you the same.

I had an understanding person who I sold the car too and she was willing to let me transfer the plate back to my new car.

The best thing is to speak to the new owner of your old car very nicely and ask if its ok to transfer the number plate now and offer to do all the paperwork needed ( so that it doesnt cause them any hassel). you will need to get the relevant paperwork from her and take it to the dvla office.

If they decide to get stubborn and refuse, I'm 99% sure there is not alot you can do about it. try telling her youll fill her car with petrol or something if all else fails.

drive round at night and steal the plates leave her with nothing !
