ok so i guess its my turn now, I've got the squeaky pedal box and its been happening for at least a month now. whats the best thing to do get it welded up or get a new one? also has anyone tackled the job themselves i.e taken the steering rack out?? any help would be great

The rack doesent need to cum out just the steering Colum, and you'll need to chisel or drill out the shear bolts, id get a new one there about 30 quid from vw you'll need a new little white clip on the brake pedal a few pennies from vw

cheers for the reply mate, so I'm better off getting a new one then, any ideas on were i start undoing the whole thing

i got mine welded about 5 months a go and its just started to go again. was only £50 so was a quick fix really. they charge like £200 to get a new one put in i think.

there is no way you can do it without taking out the column , it goes straight through the pedal box ,you could cut the box but thats up to you , you have to take out shit loads of trim to get to it all , youl need new sheer bolts aswel it will take a long time but you will save alot of money !!

tbh honest id rather save the cash n do it myself i jus spent 400 on a gearbox!! this pedal box issue will it also cause the gears to be slightly stiff when selecting them?? or is that the clutch cable ?? also read on a forum u can drop the column without breaking the shear bolts by taking out the pin from steering column adjustment.

ok all you will need is a brand new pedal box, get some bolts from a local diy shop instead of replacing them with bloody shear bolts, i did it myself quite a pig of a job my method was to cut the bolt so theres a flat edge i could get a screwdriver/chisel with a hammer and then spun the shear bolts out :) does take time but saves you a shitload of work really only hard part is trying not to misplace the screws etc I've got invoices from vw somewhere but i think the pedal box was about 33 quid or summin and the pedal clip was about 3 quid if you think you can take the lower dash apart and do all that crap then go for it, i did and didnt cost much :)

ne1 know the part number for the brake clip or knw were i can get 1 from

where abouts are the sheer bolts that need taking out i am struggling like hell to find them, if your not taking the steering colomn out btw expect trouble getting the bolts out that hold the pedal cluster in place

Theres two sheer bolts on the column at the further point from the dash, on the mount that holes the steering column rod thing.

You don't need to take them out though, you can just take the whole column out (take the adjuster apart) and do it that way. It's fiddley but can be done in a few hours..It's not hard, just messy.
