reet update time

this will be running a mk4 polo fuse box to run the engine as well as the mk2 one running the rest of the car. one thing i've been wanting to do ever since i did this conversion in my mk3 is to have some of the toys found in later polo's, so on this car thats what i'm gonna do.

so today i fitted a mk2 golf electric window mech, it's all fitted and ready for the mk4 polo wiring to plug into it... shit photo

this was just a random mech i had left over from a golf i broke years ago, thing is the car wasn't the mk2 with the quarter light windows that every one says you need, it seemed to fit pretty well tho so unless it had the wrong mech fitted to it at some point. i need to get another one for the other side tho

this car seems almost perfect for the 16v conversion, first up it already has these (ARB blocks)

IMAG0188.jpg

and it also has the rare as rocking horse shit thinner starter motor so i can use the lighter mk2 fly wheel

random shot of the almost finished engine

  • Gonna shorten the rear axle by 4" and fit space savers, should get the sort of tuck I'm aiming for

did a bit more today, pulled the old engine out and stripped it of the bits i'll need to fit to the AHF (gearbox, engine mount, sump, oil pick up, dip stick, fly wheel). so it's pretty much ready for the 16v to be dropped in although theres still a bit that needs doing to the engine before that will happen.

didn't get many photos but here's one of the now empty bay

and a (pretty crappy) comparison shot of the mk2 and mk4 fly wheel, i'm running the mk4 fly on the same conversion in my mk3 so once this is done i should be able to compare the two and see how much difference it makes

did a bit more today, finally got hold of a torque wrench that read low enough to torque up the cam bolts so now the engine is fully built and timed up ready for fitting. i've fitted the mk2 fly wheel although there really isn't a lot of life left in the clutch i put in it but funds are tight and i'll just have to take my time with it till i can get a new one.

only got a few photo's, first up i've fitted the mk2 sump so i had to fit the dip stick from the mk2 (also the dip stick tube) and the oil pick up thing from the mk2, here's some comparison shots (orginal AFH is the one with the longer snout on it

i also welded some random bits of metal to the sump for protection, i've cracked the afh sump on my mk3 twice already and although the mk2 sump is a lot shallower i thought i'd be better safe than sorry. it's not the tidiest job finish but it'll do what i want it to do

IMAG0200.jpg

and finally the afh kinda ready to go in, although this was before i swapped the sump over, by the time i'd done that it was dark

engines in, still need to extend the down pipe to match up with the rest of the exhaust but then it's pretty much a case of waiting until the weekend to pick up the rest of the bits i need for it. i've got some vw2 calipers and grooved disked i'll be fitting through the week also.

few pics from today

i was hoping to have this ready for Stanford hall but that's looking pretty slim atm mostly due to limited spare cash but i don't think i'll be missing that dead line by much as long as i haven't fucked some thing up while building the engine

Love the pikey sump

I need to find a MK3 pickup and sump tbf. got any spare?

nah mate i just robbed the one's off the mk2 engine. i could of done a much better job of the sump but the welder was playing up and it started to piss me off so i just rushed it, it'll do what i need it to tho which is what matters

Love it mate great work

Good stuff 8-)

Higgo, it's on baby

keep it on the venoms guy!!!

  • Author

it probably will be running the venoms for a while tone, once the coilies are on it i'll see if can get some tuck with them 8-)

  • 2 weeks later...

13 days without an update? whats going on?

  • Author

A mixture of wiring headaches, shortage of funds, sorting some issues on the mk3 but mostly making the most of the sun with family, friends and Stella

I've made a start on the wiring but need to grab the last bits for the wiring from Higgo, I've got the leccy window loom and switches wired in but still need a passenger window mech, and I'm also mid way through giving the 7j power techs a much needed refurb. Pics to follow once internet is back up and running but tbh there's not a lot of progress to see at the min

Love the pikey as fuck sump, and fully loving the venoms man! blast from the past

pikeytech tools and techniques

as for the venoms

IMAG0289.jpg

although they may be getting some less chunky ties on them and going on the mk3, i've already butchered the chassis legs on that from when i had the hydro's on it so i wanna see just how low an early polo can go on 15's

IMAG0285-1.jpg

IMAG0286.jpg

while i was pissing around with wheels i tried on one i'm selling for some one

IMAG0283.jpg

quite tempted to buy them myself now

Mk3 on venoms = awesome :D Sttttttaaaaaannnnnncccccceeeeee!

The mk2 4x4 I'm not so sure

venoms back on the mk2 for sure.

but get back on project black fanny before your build thread starts to look like B-Shaw's

tbh things 'should' speed up again now, should be getting the last parts of the loom to get it running mid week and then it's just a case of buying a few bits and bobs like dizzy cap and rotor arm. i'm gonna start bolting the injection system on during the week and basically getting the bay complete so it's just a case of wiring it in

in other news i found out very late on saturday that the venoms don't actually fit the mk3, they were touching the steering arm on the coilies to the point that the the mounting face of the wheel wasn't even sitting against the hub when it was bolted up, guess i should of noticed that sooner but hay ho.

any way so this means the venoms are back on the mk2

i've also replaced the fucked windscreen wiper motor (cheer's big burt :-D ) so that's one less problem to sort
