Mclovins Mk2 Coupe S 1.6 16v Eaton Charged (in The Making)

Featured Replies

It's going to my mates in the next week, wasn't much point in moving it now cause last weekend and hopefully this one are being spent on the other polo. Still got a couple of things I need to pick up for this anyway before I can even think about pulling the engine out.

Still need a 6n 16v drivers side engine mount so I can weld the mount for it in place and 6n alt bracket so I can start mocking up the charger mounting position

Todays your lucky day, i have a mount. (The ali part thatattatches to the lump) i think i gave my mate the other part i could ask if he still has it

  • Looking a little sorry for itself now its finally been dragged out from the garage its been buried for over a year

  • Gonna shorten the rear axle by 4" and fit space savers, should get the sort of tuck I'm aiming for

I've already got the alloy part that acts as a cam belt cover, and I've got the bit that is welded on to the 6n inner wing. It's the other bits I'm in need of, the rubber mount itself and Tue bit that bridges that to the engine

Sorry you might have already set, but are you running it as a 1400cc or 1600cc?

What kind of boost pressures and stuff to? And are you keeping the standard CR?

  • Author

Nah haven't gone into any details on the engine yet

It's staying 1.6, not 100% sure what the cr will be as I will need to work out what it is with the pistons and rods fitted and take it from there. Boost pressure is what ever the pulley on the eaton makes, i'll have to ask kiz as its from off his car

The uncertainty comes from the fact I'm using modified G60 rods which are 2mm shorter than the avy rods and will drop the cr too far. To counter this somewhat I'm fitting afh pistons which will bring the cr back up some, if this is a good enough cr then I will stick with it but if not i'll get the block decked to suit.

What I will end up with before decking would be the equivalent to a high comp avy that I was looking to build earlier (which had a cr of some thing like 12.:1) with a 2mm decomplate

The rods should be stronger than the avy ones and the lack of a decomplate can only be a good thing, also the pistons have a little more meat on them than the avy ones so hopefully it should be a fairly hardy engine. My Target is for a reliable 180bhp and I'm working to a budget of about 1-1.2k. Basically I want to see if one of these engines can he boosted for as much as a G40 conversion. There has been a lot of swapping, deals, used parts and favours being called in for it to be even possible to stick to a budget that low mind

Sticking to the budget is far from the most important part tho, that's just more a personal thing to see if I can do it or not

Guy, think I've got the drivers side mount with the bridging bit stuck in a box somwhere in my unit. PM me mate if you want it.

;)

A golf clutch fits on the polo crank yeah Guy but i need an uprated one as the standard syncro is only 90bhp with my turbo I'm aiming for 200bhp so need ideally a helix paddle one but with the type of clutch it is I'm finding it hard to find one :(

  • Author

Really? Would of thought golf clutches that could take that sort of power would be easy to find, what about a standard vr6 clutch? Would be a lot cheaper than after market and are fitted to cars with nearly 200bhp and a fair amount of torque as standard. Should be able to handle a boosted afh surely?

Looking forward to seeing this when its done. Sounds like it should be strong enough with G60 rods etc. Did you consider a turbo?

  • Author

That's just a standard big block golf clutch setup isn't it?

What about an uprated mk2 golf 16v one, some thing like this?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Paddle-Clutch-Ki...=item2567d46133

Or surely a standard rallye clutch would do the job?

Si I didn't even consider a turbo, I've had the sound of kiz's eaton in my head for a long time now and decided it was time I did something about it

I'm not after big power, just a reliable and antisocially boosted polo, its as much about the noise for me as it is the performance, i'll be looking into toothies in the future if the engine proves to be up to boost 8-)

Luckily this won't be my daily so I don't have to worry about pissing off the neighbours setting off to work every morning

That was Kiz's problem wasn't it, annoying the neighbours? Well, seems like there are some interesting builds occuring atm. Keep us updated (no doubt you will)

Nom nom nom, I can't wait for that pulley/ported charger whine. Neighbours are gna love it at half6/7 every mornin haha.

Yeah it was, but I don't like my neighbours anyway, ones a stuck bastard and the other is a crazy deaf and dumb woman (i've had to pile car parts against part of the fence in my back garden to stop her coming in and looking through my back Windows  ).

Imo its a very good time for small block tuning in the UK atm. For ages it seemed to be so far behind big block tuning over here it was laughable, and the small block lads on the continent were on a totally different level, but it seems we are finally stepping up the game over here and there are some great builds on the go 8-)

I'm looking forward to the charged mechy head engines,

Me, eric and simon vs you, toby and dan 8-);)

Simon isnt boosting a mechy head though is he? Thought it was just us two?

I'm not after power though... Not with the AFH atleast, G40, ill blow you all away.... ull all be driving 50K BMW's by the time my G's done though

Guy, will you have a car next show season capable of going across the pond? Instead of looking for info on the internets, lets just go over there and ask these people face to face

Although, you will have probably done this by then. But you never know.

Sure my neighbours got annoyed at me going to work at 6 every morning when i had the eaton fitted

All they hear now is the dumpvalve.

Can i borrow it one evening?

To come drive in n out of my garage a few times to piss the bastards in the flats off a bit? ahaha!

Still gay 8v's

But yeah it should be fun and will be good to compare what works best (or at all as my case maybe ) and what performance compares like too

Max your forgetting Pete and Pete, yoofs build is just amazing and stinkys engine is going to be pretty special too. There's also lance with the boosted G on itb's, lots of small blocks pushing things in lots of different directions atm

who do you reckon will be first Guy me or you lol

and i have been looking at them clutches but the standard pics put me off lol and i haven't asked the sellers yet as i dont need to buy one yet but when the time comes it will be a paddle clutch ideally

do you reckon an LSD would work with a syncro lol hmmmmmm

Oh yeah, but there G40 engines, its not the same really is it? Apart from stinky-petes.

Maybe, gonna have to see how things pan out with this first. I want it done so I can enjoy the show season and get to as many as I can cause this year has pretty much been a non starter for me in that respect. Whether I would trust it to drive to the continent in so soon is another matter tho, might have to build up some trust in my engineering skills first

haha same tbh mate. I just want mine done now so i can get a good years use out of it! Few shows in the motherland and the like, nurburgring, pod, and ill be happy to kill it again for G conversion.

Be sick tho!

I'm down for that!

When you take an engine as far as they have tho it becomes irrelevant what base lump you started with imo, for how much they have changed they could of started with any small block lump really.

Pete no idea who will finish first, I'm hoping for like April time so I only have to tax it for 6 months to see me through show season (yes I really am that tight  ), But it all totally depends on cash restraints tbh
