Mclovins Mk2 Coupe S 1.6 16v Eaton Charged (in The Making)

Featured Replies

Guy, I know you're a wee trek away from me, but I wanted to have a look at this, and I've got 2 pairs of coupe S steels, which you can borrow if need be to get it through its MOT.

Cheers for the offer Karl but think I'm gonna be sorted wheels wise tomorrow. I think the next show i'll be at with this is the polo show if you want to look around it then? If you can't wait that long your more than welcome to come and have a look any time if your down this way

I won't be at the Polo Show this year as I'm on a road trip with Safbot and Char. I will however be at Action :-).

Missing one as I need a new tyre for it but hoping to hear back from just tyres tomorrow, also gonna go and grab some paint for them and give them a tidy up.

wheels look tasty but the height doesn't.

Height will be rectified after its got an mot and I can take the coilovers off the mk3 mate. Although I will have to do some thing about the rears because I'm not happy with the mk1 coilies at all due to them having pretty much no adjustment what so ever on the polo. I'm gonna whip the coilies off my jetta and see if they sit better, if not i'll have to go with some height adjusting ta rear shocks me thinks, can't be doing with reverse rake any longer :disgust:

good because reverse rake is never right and is downright wrong, its even worse than incest.

On with the Jetta coils!!!!

incest is best.

then you rich must be a fan of reverse rake. still, could be worse could be like an A4 i saw today, owned splashed out on R8 V10 wheels (or reps) then did nothing else to the car so 19 inchers on standard suspension = epic SUV ride height

It started raining whilst I was doing an outside lowering job on my old colour concept.

I lowered the back first and left it like that for two days.

try chopping rear springs on a mk3 to lower it approx 120mm...

then realising you don't know how to remove front struts :-p

drove round like i had a tonne of bricks in the back til i sold the car. dangerous and stupid, but that was years ago :-D

car's lookin good dude, i can remember this coming up for sale when i was lookin for a mk2, got pics emailed to me but it was a bit too far, proper bargain though i think he said £250 for it.

wheels have potential to look ace when its lowered.

Think i paid 350 for it, I tried to knock him down but he was't having nonprofit it

Well just been sorting out a few little bits and bobs on it ready for Friday (mot time) and took it a blast round the block and fuck me it sounds fucking amazing, I honestly can't believe how good it sounds. It's running 13's on one side and 15's on the other so kept lighting one side up but it seems quicker than the mk3 but I'm not sure if that's just the noise playing tricks on me

It will be quicker than the mk3 mate, its lighter :-)

  • Author

Any idea how much lighter they are max? I knew they were lighter but didn't think it would be so noticeable

Hmm, not sure, but it can't be all that much, they're basically the same car.

Good news though mate!

pacmon, you chat shit

I think they look fit, for sale?

But no really, they look gay because of the 4x4 stance. They will look immense with the arches hugging them.

He's been trying to get them off me for months tobes

On a wheel note I've been trying (and failing) to find some center caps for the power techs, what I have found tho is some one saying that borbet flat caps fit them (i'm assuming that these are the ones fitted to the borbet A's). So i'll be keeping an eye out for some borbet caps, although I think the standard ones with the nut shape in the middle would look better than flat ones.

I've fitted the last of the interior in it now and all that's left is to swap the wheels, battery and throttle cable over from the mk3 after work tomorrow, then off to the mot

One problem tho I have only just realised that the side repeaters ain't working, hopefully I can sort it and if not i'll have to see if the tester doesn't mind taking a little bribe

take the lenses off pop the bulb inside the wing on a bit of tape and then get some badges off a golf cl thats what i did lol

It seems the previous owner has glued the lenses on

Now has 12 months mot...

...and also the Tappets started getting very noisy on the way back. I've chucked some engine flush in and dropped the oil, i'll be dropping the sump tomorrow to clean it out and then fresh oil and filter to see if that clears it out, failing that fuck knows what's going on cause it was fine running for a good 45 mins :?

Any way because of this I've had to revert back to the mk3 till its sorted and I couldn't be arse to take the hocks back off the mk2 so I chucked some thing else on...

Been pimping around with them on tonight and now can't wait to get them sorted and on the mk2

Engine flush... probably just did you no favors at all.

MK3 looks fit, i think you need to keep it really!

I really like your girthy black fanny

The mk3's fate is well and truly sealed Toby

Don't see what harm the flush can do Toby, I'm taking all precautions (new filter, sump off and cleaned out, another oil and filter change in a few hundred miles). I already had every thing needed to do it so gotta be worth a shot rather than just ripping the engine out and stripping it down trying to find the problem

Cheers skatty

Yeah and engine oil flush will only help, Noisy tappets can be either a sign of a small problem (tired oil) or a sign of something detrimental (oil pump on its way out or a blockage) sorry to say, but if you’ve done a pressure check then I’m sure this aint the case.

The small holes in the tappets (or maybe just a couple of them) are either blocked by oil debris, or not receiving a sufficient flow of oil. Worst case you might have to whip the cams out and have a look at each one individually, the little oil damper in them should be loose but firm , not stuck solid or really easy to push.

I would do as your doing and give it a good flush first with the flushing fluid, this should free up the debris in the tappets (if that’s what your problem is) and then a few minutes of running should have them nice and clean. If you had a knackered oil pump or blocked pick up pipe then I’m sure you wouldn’t be getting oil pressure and the cylinder head and your buzzer would be going off, just have a check when the engine’s running that there’s plenty of oil getting to the cam’s/tappets (might be a bit messy, sure you’ve done it before)

Well engine is running fine now other than a suspicious knock/vibration at 2Krpm when under load, but it pulls hard and sound nice and smooth at any other time so fuck knows what it is.

Any way update time...

1 52k polo gti engine, or more importantly, bottom end. I was going to do this Mikeymk style and fit these internals into my spare afh but think I'm gonna go the saf route and just stick the afh head on this bottom end, mainly due to the good condition of this engine, the oil squirters and the fact the less I fuck about with the less I can fuck up

Only problem with this is drilling out the roller but seems as we do carbide grinding at work I'm hoping some one can grind this hole out for me, might mean I have to stop giving them shit for a week or so tho

So far so good, its still running strong (although still has a mystery knock but meh) and has raked up a fair few trouble free miles including a 6 hour round trip to Costa de skeggy. But there are a few things that need sorting before i'll be happy with it

First up the mk3 dash conversion was bodged to fuck by who ever did it so I've ripped it out and starting again with the one from my genesis, currently half way through

IMAG0610.jpg

Off to vw in a min to hopefully collect the head gasket for the 1.6 conversion which I'm hoping to have built and fitted over the weekend and need to upgrade the brakes if I get the chance as its still on the standard set up.
