Smaller bore exhausts are preferable for low down grunt but its going to start to strangle it it high rpm.

I'd get a 1.75" g40/gt system on there...

Probably didn't help either that the only experience Matt had of driving it before the run was from the camp to the strip

He did have a lot of experience of putting his foot down on the way there

Had a mess about with this today and for once it was a joy, not one thing made things hard for me and its literally the first time that nothing has gone tits up when I've been working on it

Main job was to replace the worn track control arm bushes, rather than pissing about I just replaced the full tca's

These are the old ones, one of the arb bushes was so fucked that when I took it off the metal bit in the middle dropped straight out

This has made so much of a difference to has the car drives its unreal, no longer does the car pull hard to the left when I accelerate and fly off back to the right when I lift of

I've also drilled out the restriction in the end of the back box which has without a doubt improved the exhaust note and it does seem to pull a lot harder although I'm not sure if this is just the placebo effect

Also sorted the stance but didn't get any photos

And lastly I've colour coded my spare cam cover to my wheels, probably do a few more bits as i go along

I changed the arms on our bready a few weeks ago and the worst was about half as bad as your best one! It clunked like mad and as you say dragged the car all over the place on breaking/acceleration. Your's must have been slightly more 'interesting'

Given it a blast and it certainly does pull harder up at the top end, if it hit the limiter before it was really lazy, hit it tonight (spun up coming off an island) and it bounced off it like a mother licker

Just to put things in to perspective when we tried to put the probe to marks co2 meter (was that what it was?) It didn't fit in the hole in the backbox, now the holes the same size as the big old tail pipe.

Yeah feels lively as fuck now, not gonna bother with the 1.6 conversion for now and gonna see what difference it makes at the pod. Concentrating on getting it steering and stopping properly before making it faster

I've just thought by the way, marks o2 anlyzer was reading around 19 on yours, which means a AFR of 19.1, which is 19 parts of air, to 1 part fuel.

That means it says it was running massively lean (it should be slightly under 14.7 "lambda")

Now, obviously its not running that lean as it would melt something pretty much instantly, so that points to a leaky exhaust?

Wouldn't suprize me max the center box is hitting absolutely every thing atm. I'll be taking the whole lot off to cut and weld it so it all tucks up and i'll also repair any damage and seal all the joins when refitting

Just trying to sort the steering out atm, the tca's have made a lot of difference but I'm taking the powertechs off until I get them balanced and some spigot rings for them cause over 60mph the whole car starts shaking as if all the wheels are about to drop off, nice and smooth unerring 60 tho.

Also should be buying some nice rear lights for it on Friday

Atm its going nowhere mate, I've decided that if I'm gonna sell it I wanna be able to say its complete and looking and driving how I wanted it to from the start, I've never finished any of the cars I've started so I think I owe it to myself to do at least one

I'm thinking about keeping this as a second car tho and selling off the chevette, jetta and putting aside my half of the other mk2 money and putting it all towards an xr4i. The polo is getting too small for us but I'm really enjoying it now its all starting to come together

I'll be honest tho that's the only angle I could find that doesn't show much of the body work tlc that it needs

The exhaust is so much better, it actually sounds like its got a system on it now rather than just being muffled and it pulls so much better. The diameter of the pipe wasn't the problem, it was that some one had literally welded the hole in the end up and the drilled a few holes in its place. It must of been creating some impressive back pressure, also that engine knock that has always plagued it has gone so it must of been the engine strugging to run properly under all that back pressure
