My brothers girlfriend is looknig to buy a convertible for around the 3k mark but isnt really sure what the best option is.

She's been looking at mk4 golf cabs, anyone have any opinions on them? Any major problems she should look out for?

Or can anyone recommend a better option? Reliability is quite important,

well the main problem is that it's a mk4 golf, then to make the chassis even worse they chopped the roof off

i've got a soft spot for these

but tbh my details about what she's looking for in a car would help, does it just have to be a soft top, or does it need to be modern with lots of toys, how many seats ect

she's keeping a fairly open mind at the moment so not bothered about modern toys etc, only 2 of them so 2 seaters or 5 seaters are fine, but yeah must be soft top.

i'll see what she thinks of the mk1 cab, that's what my first thought was!

Looked at some mx5's last year fancied an early mk1 most were rot boxes but mx5's are the best cheap soft top.

very reliable cars check brakes are fine and watch to make sure rear wheels are straight as it bend rear arm if you lose the rear end.

also word is they rust quite horifically the eunos ones if they're not cared for so mazda or take you time and find a good eunos

Could get a very nice condition low mileage BMW e36 for that and still have some cash to mod it a bit or a mg midget etc but need to check them hard for rust. Or Honda del sol my mate had one, fun wee cars.

Mk1 MX5. The Eunos Roadster. Ideally a later imported one. As when they're brought into the country they're undersealed etc. Where as a UK one could have had near on 20 years of lovely british weather to deal with.

And they look amazing.

MX5s are great, but they've been done.

No love for the mk3 MR2? That's probably what I'd go for just to be different.

Don't know why I don't like that Mx-5 posted above, just doesn't work I don't think (although i'm probably the only person who doesn't )

But yeah as everyone says, super reliable (good ol japs), an import is preferable. A good friend of mine has a 1.8 mk1, one of the special editions (I can't remember exactly which one), but bought it for £1500 a couple of years back with 80k on and it's never missed a beat. Not very fast in a straight line but really comes into it's own through the twisties!

Avoid the 1.4 16v like it was the plague

My old man has a supercharged Mk1 Eunos Roadster, bright yellow with buckets, 4-point harnesses and a half cage. with medium lows on coilies.

I've only driven it a couple of times and it is the most fun I've ever had with my clothes on.

He uses it as a track toy and its on (road legal) semi slicks. I think (he says.....but i cant be sure) its around 280 horses? Feels like a million in a car that light and low.
