1.3 single point injection engine problem

Featured Replies

right, the car has been 'modded' by some clever clogs, so what exactly the engine is, is up for discussion.

its now got single point injection and, apart from that, I'm couldnt tell you...

anyway, the car has just developed a problem and to save on garage costs i dont have, i thought i would ask on here first.

when on idle and when at low revs, the revs drop, randomly with no rythem or pattern. if you sit the revs at 1000 it drops to a near stall and then comes back instantly, but the drop seems near consistent in the sence if your at 2000 it drops to 1000, 3000 it drops to 2000 etc. sometimes it does a few drops in a row and will stall or get near to it. there is nothing you can do to stop the blip, but it does seem the hotter the engine gets, the more it happens

I've also discovered that my fan wont kick in at all... if they are or are not connected, any help or sorting either problem wold be great

so far people have said, airline leaks, carb problem and choke.

i cleaned the carb to death and it made a SLIGHT difference for about a minute, then went shit again.

cheers guys.

I've got the same problem as well, I started taking off my carb this morning to clean it and noticed that my crankcase mounted breather is leaking oil all over the place and the breather pipe had a hole in it (Common problem for these engines), also I heard this causes to much compression or something in the engine and it makes it run like that shit. So if you said cleaning the carb didn't fix it the slightest, this might be the problem but I'm not 100% sure.

Check to see if you have the same problem as well.

Hopefully by Monday or Tuesday I would have a new Crankcase Breather in and I'll let you know if it's sorted the problem or not.

thanks mate :) yeah, if you let me know.

as i said, this started life as a standard 1.3 then just had the single point bolted on and a loom squashed in. so checking all the usual things is SO hard! lol

What car is it mate? If it's a mk3 ('90-'94) then it'll be single point injection from the factory, not a carb. However a lot of people make the mistake of calling it a carb because it does actually look like one!

My initial thoughts is that if it's not an air leak or dirty throttle body then a few common problems on these cars that cause rough running issues are usually the hall sender in the dizzy, blue temp sender or lambda sensor. Those would be my first ports of call.

well actualy, its in a mk1 golf

the guy that sold it told me with a great smile it was a polo gt engine... with single point injection? shush...

so, it could be a 1983 mk1 golf 1.3 or a polo 1.3 or something similar.

i posted on here cause to my knowlage, the polo's and golfs of that era were running the same engines give or take? so please no 'its a golf not a polo your a cock' comments! plus, be kind, i also own a bready :p

we just went out and its pissing oil from a few places, one of which is RIGHT above temp sensors etc. cleaned the oil out of them and its sorted the problem somewhat, its now and ''intermitant' problem, as in, now and again.

i just drove for 40 minutes and it only happened on idle 5 times

ideas?

Nah definitely not a full polo GT engine then (it could be the block and head i spose). Could you post a picture of it?

Hmmm, well i'd try and fix the oil leak, sounds like it could be from the rocker cover gasket? Then replace the blue temp sensor for a new one. Can get them from GSF for cheap :-)

thats the bay mate, looks to be a standard polo 1.3 running a 5 speed box. the box is looooooooooong ratio aswell...

yeah, i think it is coming from there. there seem to be a few leaks, but thats the main one.

I'm also aware the head gasket is on the way out, as if you squeeze one of the lines off the 'carb' :p you get mayo coming up... so anyone making a tuna sandwich give me a shout, got plenty going spare...

looking at the top pic, you can see all the oil... :)

Haha yeah definitely an 1.3 SPI there, with an 8p box.

I'd be really pissed off with whoever sold that to you as a GT!

haha, oh dont worry, i did the mother of all haggles! tuhe engine in it has only covered 41,000 with proof and the car itself has done 38,000 with proof.

it has MINOR rust with every panel straight and original, with imaculate interior... the engine being a none GT was exactly what i needed...

anyway, any ideas on the engine front? replace the sensors and also whatever is leaking and take it from there?

Looks nice that :-)

Yeah that's what I'd do. You'll only need to replace the blue one. The black one has no bearing on the running of the engine, just deals with the temp gauge.
