AFH vs 6N2 GTI Engine

Featured Replies

I am going to convert my 6N so that it has one of these engines but I am unsure on what route to go.

I am thinking to go for the AFH with a 4-2-1 exhaust manifold and bike carbs with no management.

And maybe even putting a 1.6 bottom end on the AFH.

Would people say that the AFH is the way to go for my conversion rather than the 6N2 GTI engine?

Does anyone have any suggestions on other conversions that fall within a reasonable price range.

Cheers

My 1.6 AFH was very good with the iron cylinder block, but it burned oil on both the ally blocks and there was nothing wrong with them. Gutted, because it took quite a lot of work to get an ally AFH together. But then mine had a compression ratio of well over 12:1 by this time, that wasn't the best idea either. Plus my exhaust was too big - it ran best with the iron block, 11.5:1 compression and more restrictive exhaust.

Bit peaky, the cam profiles weren't perfect for the stroke but it was progressive for a long stroke.

This made it a bit inefficient,as it likes to rev and that aint the most fuel efficient way to drive.

Bit early to comment on the bike carb'd GTi engine. Mine is an AVY, but its not on the road yet so I've yet to find out if its gonna have been worthwhile.

One thing for sure,it has its issues too. Having machined the inlet cam to accept a distributor, you then find you cant re-fit it because there's no woodruff key on the hydraulic vvt inlet sprocket and you've machined off the position points on the distributor end. But you simply mark it up at one of the main cam bearings before removal - fail to mark it up,and you'll be irreversibly lost.

Not that the AFH is without its problems if you use a different block,as some blocks (including the GTi block) need engineering to take the cam idle pulley.

None of the problems are more than an obstacle, unless I'm about to find out something harsh..

Right I Have come top this so far>

I am going to use:

AFH Cylinder Head

AFH Cylinder Block

AVY Pistons

AVY Conrods

But what Crankcase to use AVY or AEE can anyone shed some light.

I will also be running bike carbs and a 4-2-1 exhaust manifold.

The crankcase is the block. You mean what crankshaft? Well it depends what oil pump and crank pulley you have.

If you're buying an AVY for the parts, its a bit of a no-brainer because both the AVY's I've got have the wider pulley that'll take the AFH belt.

basically using the setup that Saf etc suggested then, its also the setup I'm in the progress of running into my mk4.

if you can find an AVY bottom end then use that along with the AFH head, the ARC bottom end is slightly different i believe. even using the AVY bottom end you will need to do a bit of engineering to get one of the pulleys onto the block

the avy block is by far the best choice in terms of reliability because it has under-piston spray jets unlike the others, so it's a bit more rugged for high revving use

So basically i should just get an avy and use an afh cylinderhead?

Would this be the best bet?

yeh thats what most people have done, mines sat waiting to be done and cleaned up

its still not straight forward so getting reading the threads that are on here to do it

Cool, how much has yours cost you? Did you just buy a complete avy?

i bought a complete avy engine for £200 off ebay and used that, but the rings were completely shot because it had been sat up for ages, although for ease of fitting i'm starting to lean towards using a proper afh block and head together and just swapping the crank and pistons over, it saves a lot of hassle of making some parts fit together with a mix and match of bits and pieces

I've bought three complete avy and arc lumps for 150 quid, an afh with shricks for 350, a std afh for 125 and a couple of spare afh heads, sold most parts off the conversions to cover costs, and had a lupo gti lump which i had procured for free. it helps to have a few bits to look and play with

have you managed to get the avy components to fit into the afh block then??? that would surely be the easiest thing to do, though if youve got someone wholl engineer up one of those pulley bars then its just as easy
