Picked this up from this very forum. I had no real reason to buy it I just liked the idea of it so a week after seeing it me and the wife popped down on the train and picked it up. It was imported from Spain to the in 1996.

The engine is the multi point 1.3 NZ engine with 55bhp as standard. Most will know but in Europe GT was just a trim spec and you could have it with most if not all engines.

The body work is a bit rough major paint cracking on the drivers rear quarter and its been in a small bump at the back. There is big rust issues on the rear valance and there are loads of small dents all over it. So its fair to say that this will never be a show car.

How ever this car does have a few things going for it. It has a brake servo, being LHD is has better weight distribution and it doesn't have a sunroof. Some people might see where this is going!

So what are the plans for it I hear you yell...

Well it will be made into a track car. Yes the Green Coupe S was going to be a track car but after spending so much time and money on it, it will now be the weekend get away car. The one we take on road trips and weekend aways. Which means this can be more of a raw track car.

I'm not sure on engines yet it will be either a 3F engine or a AFH on carbs but I think I'm swaying more to the 3F. The main aim will be to get it as light as possible which is great as doing this is all cheap. The windows will eventually be polycarbonate and there will be 2 bucket seats and my cage. That with a GT engine producing 90ish BHP and I'll be happy.. or maybe I put my current Carbed AFH in this and the Coupe S gets a 1.6 AFH hybrid??? :-D

We will have to wait and see, but I do fancy haveing one of these to haul it about with!! :-D

Progress on this will not be quick as I really need to get the coupe S finished before I start any work on this but I may start to accumulate parts for it :)

Great news. Was going to say that after the extensive restoration on the coupe S i would be very worried ragging balls off it round a track.

I really like that man, always wanted a mk2. Didnt know they just put the NZ engines in them, thats the same as in my minty polo!

NZ = win. non-cat versions are 64bhp. Does it have a cat?

It could be actually as the condition sounds similar. You get this from Brighton Mark? Nick went down to buy one but the seller couldn't find the MOT so he had to walk away.

Yeah its the same one as Nick when to see. The Guy found the MOT under the rear seats :)

It does have a cat but The exhaust will be going for a SS one with a single silencer.

So what do people think engine I should do engine wise? It has to be relatively cheap. I'm a fan of the AFH conversion but maybe the 3F with the existing ignition system... or 3F on bike carbs.. umm ideas? :)

yes indeed! its do-able, someone has ran an afh on the digifant management.

But I'm doing that I'll just whack some carbs on and get even more power and a great sound! I must admit I'm thinking of putting the 1.4 16v in this and then building a 1.6 AFH for the other one. Maybe...

I've been buying a few bits and bobs for it so far.. even though I said I wouldn't :)

- First of all a rear light so I can get rid of the stand alone fog under the rear bumper.

- A set of seat subframes

- HnR suspension kit. This will go on this car until the other one is finished and then I'll swap them over.

- VWII calipers.

- Poverty Spec wing mirrors with out the internal adjusters

I'm going to crack out the spray cans in the next few weeks and try and tidy up the rear quarter panel to try and get it kinda presentable for some shows.

Yes, 'box is attached. Head is all apart and labelled up awaiting a rebuild. I was gonna keep it for my Derby but the Derby is on hold until I find a lockup or something similar. If the Derby restoration starts this decade i'd be chuffed.

I also have my White GT breadvan if you were after a full conversion?

I also picked up some VW Black spray paint to tidy up the rear end!

For that quarter panel, I would try and get some barrier coat on it. It looks to have crazed as the paint thats been put on over the original factory paint has reacted. If you can block it as flat as you can, get a layer of barrier coat on to stop any further reaction, then apply your fresh paint, it shouldn't come back to haunt you again (in theory ).

The factory paint is crazed too. Is there a specific 'barrier' paint? I'll be sanding most of that 1/4 down and give it a spray over
