An Original LHD Mk2 Polo GT

Featured Replies

Very nice - I was eyeing that up when it was on but couldn't justify it to myself.

If you look up PShears old DynoRod orange Mk2 from back in the day, he was using an NZ with a GT cam in and getting GT-like figures, so I can't see any real point in swapping to a GT engine for the sake of the slightly higher compression. Just stick a cam in it.

Cheers.. :)

I thinking I might go ABD, GT Cam, and Chip with a Decat SS exhaust and a GT box.

OK, this car gives me the horn

Man, black mk2's look so much better than mk3's,

Them wheels are perfect for it aswell, really want a set of mahles for mine. :-(

Its not perfect by a long shot but its much better than what was there :)

Looks bloody perfect on the picture lol

What prep work did you do? Just wet and dry, primer , sand , paint and laquer?

Nice work Mark!

Cheers :)

The joy of photos hiding bad work since Mr Kodak was born...

- Well I sanded it down... badly... I jumped more that 2 grades in paper.. but it was smooth ish

- I then primed it with the only primer in the garage. so bits of its white primer and the other is high fill yellow

- Then wet and dried it back

- did a coat of black

- Then wet and dried it back to remove paint runs

- another coat of black

- let it dry 2 days

- Polish with Autoglym Paint renovator and Super Resin Polish

There are runs and you can still see some sanding marks but for a very quick job I'm happy. I'll prob do it again in the summer and do the whole quarter as it needs it really.

Picked up some H&R Cup Suspension

IMAG0550.jpg

As well as some other bits and bobs :)

And set about fitting it..

IMAG0553.jpg

You don't muck about!

So you're messing about with poly windows and racing battery to get this thing light, and you're intent on putting an iron cylinder block in it?

I've got an ally block you can have, clean and low mileage. You can use it as either 8v or 16v, 1.4 or 1.6, i ran it for a couple of hundred miles as a 1.6 16v with 12.3:1 compression and 900s but it needed the M9 head threads taking out to M11 for it,as the long skinny bolts were too stretchy in that crazy state of tune.

Didn't bother, swapped it for an AVY instead,so the ally block is surplus.

Well I was cause its nice and easy :) But I should really learn how to build an engine :)

I guess there is quite a difference in weight between the blocks then.

I haven't weighed it but its around 20kgs so its worth having..

Pain in the arse to convert, you need to make an adaptor plate for the water pump if you wanna run AFH, the pump itself needs the pulley offsetting (there are extremely easy ways of doing this),there are threads to be tapped for the chain drive oil pump, steel thread put into the block for the idle pulley, the head needs dentistry of the keyhole oilway..

I've already done all this though. :)

Its a waste for even me to scrap despite me scrapping some good stuff in the past,so i intend to put it in the 6n when i fit a longer ratio gearbox and give the lump itself a good inspection - or it could be swayed to a more interesting cause if someone wanted to make a good/interesting use of it.

Speed isn't everything but on a track it helps,I'm not dissin' the 3F but i cant see you getting over 180bhp/ton with one,as you surely could with an ally valver.

Do it!

Ok.. you might have sold me on it. it does seem perfect for what I want.... its a dam good job that I'm not modding or doing any work on this car before I've finished the other one!!!

Let me know what you would like for it :)

Wow this looks awesome! I need a mk2 in my life, anybody want to buy a G40?

Couple of questions, where did you get the seat subframes from? I've got my eye on some Sparco seats but cant find suitable frames.

Secondly, did you paint that quarter panel using a compressor and gun or colour matched cans? The finish looks great :o

I got the subframes second hand but you can get them here http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/Motorsport/S...ing_Frames/1763 you get a Club Polo Discount if you are a member and phone them up

As for the quarter panel... the finish really is not that great at all. But its 100 time better than it was. It was done with Halfords of the shelf spray cans

Hi Mark,

Its looking a million times better already, I log on every other day to see if you have done anymore on the GT Coupe.

I miss the car so much, didnt really think i would. Brilliant job with paint work by the way.

I've had a really good look around for the original spanish owners manual but haven't had any joy as yet.

Its not something i would have thrown away, so its hidden itself amongst my other stuff.

The BMW alloys look really cool.

Hope all well. Dave

This project is taking its time as I'm trying to concentrate on the other polo. But I'm still buying parts for it

Picked up this boot to replace the one that's on as it has rusted though by the window seal

IMAG0616.jpg

It's in blue but nothing a bit of spray paint won't fix. :)

Also found out this weekend that I have a fuel leak. It coming from the top of the tank so it probably the case that I have a split pipe or something on the lift pump. Will have a look this weekend.
