Just bought some of the above speakers to replace the standard ones. They looked sweet on the spec, just what i needed within my budget.

I got them home and saw that they need a minimum of 40 Watts RMS. Am i right in thinking that underpowering a speaker is as bad as overpowering one? The Pioneer stereo i bought just a monday only puts out 22 Watts RMS.

So yeah, do i need to get a stereo that does at least 40WRMS??

Also, they won't mount straight into the original speakers' place - are there any adaptors i can buy so they fit straight in?

One more thing... How on earth do you get the standard speaker wires out and the new ones in!?

duno what mk you got mate but on my mk5 i cut the adaptor that went on to my standard front speakers and just brought some speaker terminals and striped the wires back added the terminals onto the wires then pluged to speaker obsiouly and then just screwed the speaker inplace

Installing it isn't really the issue - it won't be as secure as it could, and won't look as snug as it could, but it would at least be installed. The thing i'm worried about is powering them with 22WRMS when the speakers need at least 40 :/

You won't be doing them any harm running them off of the headunit, don't expect them to sound fantastic though, better off amping them if you want them to sound good.

I ran my slick speakers (Min 70w) off my 45w headunit with no issues, just meant turning up the volume a few notches more

I read somewhere about clipping? Something like when an amp or headunit can't power a speaker enough. Like, it clips the signal from the amp, and then the speaker tries to play out the clipped signal which causes a lot of heat or something and in the end they will get damaged? I don't know :/

I'd really rather just stick to the minimum figure it tells me, because i know the manufactures know the speaker will be OK with the 40 minimum.

I might do it, but if it doesn't sound any good, what's the point? May as well just buy a more decent headunit (only bought one new monday!!)

clipping is when you put too much power into a speaker, the top and bottom of the sine wave gets clipped which almost makes it look like a square wave, if you under power a speaker you will have just a small wave, wont do any harm but it could be amped to use the full capacity of the speaker (your peak to peak for them speakers is 113w)

So buying a seperate amp would be better then? I'm a bit tight for money at the moment, and don't really want a load of amps floating about my car! lol there will be 3 in that case if all goes like i want it to :)

Ahh that makes sense... So i guess the speaker would try to hold that voltage (the sustained 'flat spot' on the graph) and that's what burns the bugger out??

And i want to have 2 subs, powered by seperate amps, so there will be 2 amps :p But 3 if i amp the new Vibe's up lol

Why not just use one amp to power both subs? Trying to set the levels on 2 amps for both subs will be a pain in the ass dude. To be honest though, in a polo you really are better off with just one sub in the correct size enclosure than you are with 2 subs in the wrong size box.

Ahhh didn't think of that. I guess amps would be sort of like an engine - All very similar, but never the same. Making them difficult to tune to exact settings of each other haha. Might well just keep it the one then, can't be bothered with the hastle of 2 amps if that's the case.

the flat spot (the straight line) is 0v no sound, yeah i wouldnt use 2 subs with different amps, would be a right nice person to set up and you would prob need to use capacitors, i only have 1 crappy sub and amp box lol i think it might be blown now

But then again, if i did decide on 2 amps, i wouldn't skimp on anything to save money. If something's gonna be done, then it's gonna be done properly :)

All the money in the world won't setup 2 amps for you and theres really no point in going to the hassle of having 2 amps for your subs when theres plenty of amps out there that will handle 2 subs on there own just fine.

So i'd be looking at an amp that can put out 2000WRMS then lol - Can you recommend one at all?

So i got the Vibes installed today - Took me like 4 hours! :s But anyway, just wondering if anyone can confirm my 'suspicions':

Shall i gradually increase the volume over hours of time playing so that all the parts and things can 'bed in'??

It sounds pretty shite at the moment, but is that because the speakers are new and need bedding in, and because my stereo isn't what the speakers want (they want >40WRMS)?

What subs is it your planning on using? You'll have more to worry about than what amp to use if your planning on running 2000wrms, you'll need to take a serious look at the cars charging system with that sort of power.

Like I said, they'll sound pretty poo off the headunit, no amount of bedding in will fix that, you could sound deaden your doors and install the speakers on mdf baffles, correct installation is actually more important than the kit you use.

Amping them will help out loads with the general sound quality though.

Yeah you're probs right, but i will be getting a better headunit later once i get the bass sorted. Then i can properly crank up the volume - The birds will swarm :) :p

Really your looking more along the lines of bigger alternator, upgraded wiring under the bonnet and an extra battery.

Why not just spend the money on an amp for your front speakers rather than wasting money on another headunit that still won't be able to put out the correct power for your speakers?

I thought there would be one about powerful enough, but if not then i will amp them. Decided i'm ging to stick with just the one sub, can't be bothered with extra batteries and that!
