6n2 1.4 16v - altering idle speed

Featured Replies

hey all,

got a 6n2 with a couple of faults,

noticed that the idle was a lil too low when cold, around 800rpm, after using the car for an hour, leaving it for 15 and driving again, i noticed the revs sitting around 4-500rpm and the car was occasionally stalling.

the car drives fine all the way through the rev range, so i just want to tweak the idle so its around 1k with all the electrics on.

my question is, any ideas of the wherabouts on the 6n2s for the idle screw?

also how do i set the timing on a distributorless engine? i have a timing light with advance, just never played on anything this new before

danke!

I'm pretty sure there wouldnt be an idle speed screw on these as they have drive by wire throttle bodies, probably have to plug into computer to adjust idle, same with the timing id imagine.

matt.

just checked auto data says its not adjustable...i checked that against an AHW 2000 Polo..

time to get vagcom running on the old laptop me thinks, cheers boys!

there isn't an idle screw on them, it has a open ended stepper motor (2 wire) which acts against a spring loaded lever inside the throttle body, in vw idiot speak it's called the v60 actuator fyi, you can adjust the idle speed using vag-com using engine 01, adaption 10, channel 02 but the range of speeds available is very limited, something in the order of +/- 50rpm.

there is no way to adjust the base ignition timing on those engines, the crank sensor has a trigger disc with 60 teeth with 2 missing teeth, the first missing tooth passes the sensor 85 degrees BTDC (same reference timing as all late vw engines with crank sensors), however there is a global advance/retard function which gives you something like +/- 3 degrees which you can access with vag-com, one of the fields in channel 1 in basic settings mode, but iirc you need a login code to get to it which i don't know off the top of my head, i would have to look it up.. as i said, it would be global accross the entire rev range though.

in your case saf, i would give the throttle body a good clean, it might just be that it's reached it's adaption limit due to a dirty body, then after you've cleaned it try resetting the throttle alignment/basic settings using vag-com

Hmm interesting. I see why I stick to conventional setups now. Will whip it off and give it a good clean today n report back ta

you don't necessarily have to remove the throttle body to clean it, just use some carb cleaner on an old tooth brush or some rag, if you are careful it's ok to open up a DBW throttle plate by hand to get in there too

sorted mate, gave the throttle body a good clean and it idles and runs perfectly now!
