and how are they going to do that? seriously are these people smoking crack? the only way this would be possible is by banning motorised transport altogether and replacing the road network with paths, and people would still get killed on them because some people are just fucking dumb. the one main factor in most road accidents is stupidity, and the main cause of death on the roads is natural selection. until you ban stupid people not just from the roads but from any where near one, people will still get injured on the roads.

in the same proposal as cutting deaths on the roads they are also encouraging the use of electric vehicles, electric vehicles that glide silently along the roads at the same kind of speeds as a normal car. if people are so stupid that they will step in to the road in front of a car that they can hear coming, what chance do they have when the roads are full of cars that do make any noise at all?

Central Milton Keynes,originally designed with car use in mind,has got considerably harder for the motorist thanks to 15 years of left-wing government,and as a result i simply no longer go there.

Retail parks are fine for me,its a shame the huge shopping centre is being strangled and i fear for its future,but its not my problem. haven't been there for months,dont intend to.

After hearing about this on the Radio I proceeded to burn 1/4 a tank of Shell's finest whilst achieving 11MPG :)

On a more serious note I'm a little unsure how banning petrol and diesel cars will help cut accidents, I haven't read into it too much but I'm assuming this is under the pretence that electric cars will still be allowed, I can't see how this will cut accidents, for starters electirc cars MAKE NO NOISE!

Sounds stupid but this is a pretty large problem when it comes to the average pedestrian trying to cross the road, not to mention people with limited sight, there is a lot of research at the moment looking in to what sound electric cars should make, I know for one that the WMG here at Warwick is currently working on a project related to this - http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/fac/sci/wmg/rese...e/elvin_the_ev/

Quite often see that bastard thing zipping about campus and have seen people step out in front of it many a time, I just wish they'd make it sound like a V12..

We have had electric cars since the earliest days of motoring. Indeed, the electic brougham was the elegant way to go about town for the rich at the turn of the 20th century. With all electric cars, however, there has been the question of range. Unless you want half the car filled with batteries and don't mind having a recharging time of many hours, most electic cars have a range of between 50 to 80 miles. useless for any long distances. Honda have bee piloting an electric car powered by a hydrogen fuel cell, but fuel cells are terribly inefficient in converting chemical energy into electricity. About 10% I believe. Modern petrol and diesel engines can comfortably exceed that sort of efficiency. I think that, whatever the politicians may say, the reciprocating engine will be with us for a long time yet.

As for halving road deaths by 2020 and eliminating them by 2050, this has to be wishful thinking. Granted, we have come a long way in road safety over the last 50 years or so. When I took my car test in 1967 it was a very perfuctory test indeed. One's knowledge of the highway code was contained in a couple of questions at the end of the test. We educate our new drivers better these days and encourage them to drive sensibly by making them sit their test again if they get 6+ points on their licence within the firts two years. I personally am a great believer in the idea that all drivers should resit a test every five years or so. (Yes that does include me!) just because you have been driveing umty tears does not make you a good driver.

Cars and roads have all got safer. In the fifties, we have 12 million vehicles on the road and killed about 5000 a year. We now have something like 30 million plus on our raods and kill less people than we did 50 years ago. However, with just about every car made now capable of of performance that could only be dreamed about when I was a lad, hoever, you make cars and roads safer, adn educate the drivers, some-one is going to get killed in a traffic accident somewhere and at sometime. All one can do is shorten the odds.

And, no, I am no lover of the EU. However, the real agenda for Europe has been to eventually form a Federal Staes of Europe as a big political bloc to withstand the Americans and (during the cold war) Soviet Russia. The new big political threat on the horizon is China!
