Working out mpg

Featured Replies

Well I've been trying to work out the MPG of my coupe, its in gallons so when i search google for a converter it only comes up in miles etc.

I've done 170 miles and used just under 5 gallons, this could be bad but can anyone help or point me in the right direction :)

5 gallons = 22.7 litres (x4.54)

170/22.7 = 7.49mpg!

7.49mpg?

7.49mpg?

Are you driving round in first gear!?

That cant be right, if i did 7.4 miles every gallon i would have done 37 miles...

I'm shit at maths btw so that could be wrong

That's miles per litre mate....

All you need to do is divide how many miles you've done by how many gallons you've used.

170/5 = 34mpg

Not bad, if that's combined. I used to get 50mpg+ on a long journey sitting at 60 (that was with an 8p though).

Thats not great. How have you worked out how much fuel you've used are you just going on the gauge? The best way is to fill the tank to the brim till it first clicks off (or sprays all over your legs in the case of a mk3). Drive around for a few hundred miles (if you've got a sat nav have it on every time you drive as they usually have an odometer on - the standard one will be out if you're running smaller tyres than stock). Go and fill up until the first click again and record how much fuel you've got (you'll need to convert to gallons from litres), then just do miles/amount of fuel in gallons.

Mines doing about 42mpg average driving for me (so pretty quickly) and 53mpg on a long run.

That's just going off the gauge but the problem with that is the gauge will read 4 gallons left but it wil go up too every so often so its not accurate but thanks for the advice guys

Its not that bad.. try giving it a service and dont be as heavy footed (if you are :p) Plus was this from just going onto the red to then filling up then going back onto the red with reset gauge?

I did that and i averaged around 42mpg in my GTI so your going wrong somewhere in your foot to pedal motions :p

MPG makes me sad :(

i found that out on the morning of e38, wish some one warned me before hand, feet stinking of fuel for a day was not good
