has anyone insure a q-plate before and what are the insurance problems with them?

I'm looking at a golf today on a Q but its cheap because of it

Depends on why it's on a Q.

Q plates are vehicles made up of several parts of other vehicles. There is a point system, like suspension 1 point, chassis 2 points, engine 2 points etc etc, and the car has to have over a certain amount of points-worth of one car to be registered as that car. I can't remember the exact values off-hand.

The fact that it has a Q-Plate, means it's been made from different bits of different vehicles, and should therefore be carfeully inspected! Insurance may be tricky as it's not one specific car, probably best off trying brokers...

Why was it not re-registered with an age-related plate then? Sounds a bit strange to me....

Unless of course the car was totally removed of all identifying numbers and things and there's no other way of telling its age...

That's one reason for a vehicle to be on a Q, and in one form or another, the most common reason, but not the only reason.

Not a problem, insurance shouldn't be much more, if any at all, but do a HPI to be sure and check the car over well.

Because that's not the normal way of doing it, as I'm aware, you get a Q, and if you want to get rid of it, you then apply for an age-related plate subsequently. Alternatively get a Q plate, then stick your private plate on, in which case, when the private plate is transferred, the vehicle will revert to it's Q-plate.

Or the owner might just have liked the Q-reg, I wouldn't part with the one on my truck.

You cannot transfer a q-plate away from the car once it's been applied. Nor can you transfer a private plate to it. If it has a Q-plate, you are stuck with it as it's non-transferable. It will say this on the V5C of the vehicle.

Depends a little, there's some weird rules with regard to total losses becoming stolen recoverred.

Removed ID is a seriously weird one, and not something I know a lot about.

Other interesting one is if the car was total lossed, recoverred, and then had a significant number of parts changed (eg, knackerred engine replaced etc), then it can't pass a VIC check (numbers can't match), and we go back to what nelson said, as it's regarded as a vehcle built from parts.

Another, albeit rare, situation is where the shell, with or without other parts attached, was recoverred from a chopshop scenario.

a mate of mine has just bought a brand new 06 caterham 7 but because it has a second hand gearbox it was registered on a Q, but he has transfered his private plate to it!

It wont have a Q plate because it only has a different gearbox! He won't have been able to transfer a plate if indeed it was Q, if he has, I'd check that out as he's probably made a mistake somewhere down the line!
