My wee squarebacks been of the road for a while (08) as the charger poped an oil seal a while back so i took the engine out her and decided she was going to get some love.

So i bought a wee mk3 saloon which i enjoyed playing for a few years but decided to get back to my heck and finish it off properly.

She left the factory as a 1993 L plate 1.0L genesis Squareback and i bought her off a chap down in Stains London, who looked after her well so i am the 4th owner, others being the wee man, VW (ex demonstrator), and another chap who only owned her for a month or so after VW. She was bought to replace an identical Squareback i had and loved very much but unforunately died in an accident (twisted chassis legs).

For the last 3 years she has been living in my garage while i have been gathering parts off worldwide ebay, scrapped cars, VW and other vw specialists and anorak warehouses, and I'm at the stage where i have 75% (ross dont laugh!) of the stuff to give her the rebuild i have been wanting to do.

heres is how she looked when i first convertied her to a G40 back in 2007...

Currently I'm stripping her down for a full respray so she looks rather sad at the moment living under her superman cape as one of my friends likes to call it, the floors are bare underneath all the tanks pumps lines removed etc most of what is left on her will be my spares and the new bits will go on instead.

Spec when she was last on the road in 2007 is below, but i hope change the OEM spec this time round as even i have to admit less is sometimes more, mechanically she will be almost the same spec with a few changes as whatever power she was producing i am happy with as u could get wheel spin in any gear and she picks up speed nicely considering the extra weight i have loaded her with, she is definatly more a comfy cruiser than a racer!

Power wise I'm not sure what’s she is running hope it would be about 150BHP.

Engine was rolling roaded about 6 years ago at 170bhp with 170lb-ft but it had a big exhaust and aquamist at the time so i know its down from that.

would love a rocco tilt and slide roof but most you see are fecked, bits missing, leaky or over £100 and the scrappy near me never have any in.

can get a run I'm it mark yeah but you then want one that's what happened to me. Mine should be a Q plate I think.

Ironically out the different Mk3 polos I have owned over the years this one has never been to a polo show

as it was nice and sunny today started to mock up the bits make sure they fit and cut the headlamp washer adn fog holes in the front bumper as i have been putting it of as do it wrong and thats alot of £££ down the drain for a new colour coded bumper. So please to say it went ok with only minor extra filing needed.

the back bumper was a bit distorted from living up my loft for about 2 years so bit of bending and bashing and got it bolted down, so will leave it a few days try make it bend back into shape.

Stripped out some more of the interior so the floors look good just the battery tray needs a 2" square welded in but its right on the curve , will change the tailgate tomorrow as mine is rusting from the inside out the feed wire into the tailgate is to big to get out the hole on the C pillar so think i might have to cut the connector so i can get the pins out. as i cant see anyother way to get it out in tact.

anyway was nice to see her looking like a polo even breifly with her "Face" back on.

did a wee bit after dinner tonight,

just got the washer tubing cut to size and all in place neatly and the wee clips on. finally found out the 3 recesses in the bumper are for the clips always wondered as if its got an extra hole or space that usually = vw do something to fit in it. so in an anoraky way that made me happy lol :-D

then fitted the twin horns and wee bracket.

did a wee bit more:

let the car sunbath for an hours or so then carefully removed the roof gutter trims are the are 100% obsolite and can snap easy when they are cold. then started picking unsticking some of the headliner but will need to wait till i get the sunroof and windows out to do it properly.

got the new tailgate on and almost fully lined up, its a tiny bit low at the top left but seems to have no more adjustment so think a file is needed to the hinge.

then got the remaining wiring out her so only the interior light loom left and gave it a hoover out.

only rust found so far is the battery tray which i knew about 2 wee specs under the door rubber and i know the overflow pipe at the fuel tank end is starting to go under the rear seat so hope there is no more.

next jobs get the front wings off i think been putting it off as the sealer stuff sucks down the back edge.

Where did you get the mudflaps from? They look spot on.

Thanks I like them too. They are out my local partco, think eBay does them too. They are £10 a pair and come with the mounting screws you just need to drill a few new holes in them so they sit nice on the body. The wee vw logos are well printed mine are 4 yo and still look pretty fresh so would recommend them.

not done much else to the shell worth reporting, so today drilled and modified my dashboard to fit some more oem stuff. i wanted to fit & check the wiring looms were long enought to get to where they need to go so most seem ok.

the bodyshop mans coming to visit on the 18th to give me a quote for repainting her so will see how it goes, so should have the wings, glass, headliner out by then and that means i can try mocking up the sunroof kit yay - will do a wee video when it works.

Dash now has all the OEM extras i wanted: heated seats, trailer light, headlight beam adjusters, sunroof switch, leccy windows, G40 speedo with the radio inductive volume sender, locking glovebox door and the aftermarket bits: Yoof black box airflow ratio meter, boost gauge, and VDO gauges in the centre consol with the Full height leather gear gaitor, uprated speekers with built in tweeters.

and got some new bits from germany, the wee speedo volume thing (wiring appears to be built in to all dash looms) so will try work out which wire i need to connect to my JVC non original head unit haynes book of lies seems to say its there!
