I have an ABS light appearing within seconds of starting the car - my mechanic diagnosed this as being a module....

Question is are they expensive and easy to fit?

Question Two: No

Are you quite sure that it isn't due to a faulty detector or a wiring problem? what method was used to diagnose the problem?

I have been out this evening as the handbrake light now appears and a warning tone when starting the car....

It still drives fine!

I think it is a fuse / electrical gremlin - just need to locate it and fix it!

Where about is the module located if I do need to replace it?

I'm sure mine had the same problem - and on Vagcom it comes up as a module, but it's not!

There are 3 fuses on the top of the battery and they have to be totally corrosion free! Any sign of corrosion and it'll chuck a low voltage warning!

I guess replace that one first (IIRC, it's the on the right, or left?) Not the middle one anyway. :p

The code will need to be cleared before the light'll go out though.

I agree with the above.. Where the fuses are you'll see some 'dots' of metal.. Clean all the contacts and exposed areas.

Also, the abs module is known to fail. The circuit boards un-solder themselves over time and is a relatively cheap repair. There is a guide on uk-polos somewhere. I'm on my iPhone so can't find it.

Nope... Your all wrong!

The fact that I could not manually fire the pump, but that everything else on the control module was working gage me a thought....

I was about to go hang myslelf in despair..... but instead, I took out the ABS control unit... and after fighting with it for an hour I managed to get the lid off...

I kinda figured, its buggered so might as well tear it appart and smash it up... its only £600 for a new module..

And this is what it looks like:

In the top left corner is the connector for the ABS pump motor. It is driven by two transistors on two seperate circuits.

Between the two connectors for the pump motor is a simple sensor circuit, if there is no motor plugged in (IE open circuit) this circuit feeds back into the EEPROM IC in the centre of the board and presumably tells the system to shut down and give a fault code...

Amazingly, on closer inspection this is what I find!

The pulse loading on the soldered joint for the motor connector was not up to the job, it has melted and failed!!! There is NO connection to the pin!

10 mins with a soldering iron and the fault code has GONE!!! :mrgreen:

If anyone else tries this, MAKE SURE you dont insert anything into the case when you are trying to lever the lid off, you WILL destroy the circuit board! And make sure you seal it back up properly afterwards with silicone so it doesnt get wet!

The note about checking fuses first has paid its dividends..... I replaced 2 * 30amp fuses on the battery and all associated fuses in the fuse board and VOILA!

Light is off - car starts and drives without any light on at all and when I tested the ABS is kicking in perfectly! RESULT!

Had this problem with mine done exactly the same took 2 mims to take apart and then found my dodgy connection mine was the top one. Soldiered it and its all works now light went out. Thanks a lot lads anyone wants any advice email me @ kierhanlon6@gmail.com
